Does This 500BHP Revo Mapped Audi TTRS Really Make The R8 Redundant? (Review And Drive)

Whenever you talk about the Audi R8, discussion of the TT is soon to follow. Everyone knows the TTRS is quicker than the old V8 R8, and here in 500bhp guise the little pocket rocket is nearly as quick as the modern V10s too - but is it really as special to drive, or merely a hollow imitation?

I bought a TT, now well into my 40’s. After a life on superbikes, you just have to appreciate the sense of safety an Audi has. They are so planted and handle like a dream. Stops on demand and that Quattro will go around corners like you wouldn’t expect it. Some of the safest cars around, if you’re my age coming home late from work, they’ll take care of you. Audi’s really are amazing cars.

Congratulations on the half-century, James - richly deserved. Biggest problem I have with the R8 is that they made it look the same as the TT (mk 1 R8 was much better in that regard). Nothing to do with the various tired cliches about TTs, just the disappoinment if you owned an R8 at how similar they look.

If my recent acquisition of a turbocharged car has taught me anything, it's that there's no replacement for displacement. The spikey, uneven, power delivery of forced induction genuinely makes me feel ill. Peak power and/or toque means very little to how a car feels to drive. An old R8 V10 manual spyder is on my bucket list for sure, and you could get one for £50k, pretty sure they'll appreciate too.

Franco Banzini I need to drive a larger engined turbo engine to see how it feels. It’s a Giulietta 1.35l turbo I’ve been driving recently, it develops a lot of torque in one big lump around 3k after turbo spool, but it’s so short lived and just spins the front wheels. Yet it doesn’t make enough low down power to set off in 2nd gear, and becomes breathless at about 5k. I hate it so much, I’ve driven NA cars with a worse power to weight ratio that feel much faster because of the broader power band and response. I’m looking at old BMWs to replace it and fancy an N52 NA 3.0, I wonder if the twin turbo N54 is still smooth to drive unlike my Giulietta, if it still has a big progressive power band I’d consider that. The 1st gear pull in the Giulietta is honestly stupid, it’s so unbelievably badly setup.

I'd say any similarities start to erode when we're talking about the RWS R8. TTs and the like will always tend to understeer at the limit but a proper RWD mid engine will always enable to tuck in and create your own angle (roundabouts always being the way to figure this out). The experience of driving the TT most of the time is that you’re in a VW type, front wheel drive, turbocharged car. R8 owners, relax. Every TTRS driver you see would prefer to be in your car by a country mile. I can see why this presenter is taking this line of sucking up to TT owners and people who aspire to this car. There are loads more people in this demographic than those who would be in the market for an R8 so makes sense for views. What’s your next video? Why, oh, why buy a 458 when you can have a Focus RS? Come on. Take it over a speed bump at legal speeds and hear it sigh happily, rather than shatter your spine... You did look as if you were being shaken around a bit.

All these cars that you plug your laptop and oops, it turns into 600 digital bhp with the click of a mouse cannot match the superiority of a NA engine with drive, feels and sound, these new cars disconnects the driver from the car.

MQB rubbish. Entire engine in front of the front axle, great for a hatch, rubbish for a sports car.

Have the TTRS and it’s bloody quick. Really appreciate Haldex on the shitty roads in winter and av 28mpg, 40 on a run Had a Supercharged Mk1 MX5 and it was a riot - absolutely agree it was more fun than the TTRS but as an every day car not so much - and nowhere near as quick and I barely got above 25mpg

Daniel Thomas I'll leave any MX5 for the denial crowd and have a proper car like this Audi.

Jabber 1974 fair enough mate , I guess I just don't like the design of Audi's great engines to be fair though...enjoy your mx5 cheers...
