Why overdraft fee is his problem? If they have separate accounts and she paid $1300 in overdraft fees, that tells me she is grossly negligent to her accounts. Also, she says her account is -$600 after the overdraft, that means her account would have $700 otherwise as long as she paid attention and transferred the money before the fee occurred. Also, I believe most banks would send notifications when account is overdrafted and she usually has a day to transfer the fund, so she could easily avoid the situation if she simply paid attention.

My ex-husband did something similar to me. His excuse was I brought debt into the marriage, and if I didn't have personal debt, that money could go towards rent, utilities and food, and he wouldn't need to contribute to our finances. He said it wasn't his responsibility to make up the difference. And since he had no debt, he didn't have to work. When I said he needed to help with shared expenses like rent, he'd circle back to my personal debt and say if I didn't have it, then the whole rent would be paid. That was his mentality. That's why he's the ex.

That's because they're not idiots. Your #1 job in life is to protect your future. If you can't at least provide for yourself, you're incapable of providing for others. #2 marriage is NOT a guaranteed life event. Chances are 1 of the 2 involved people are going to screw the other over in one way or another should things go bad. Any combined account could be wiped out and you'd have nothing to fall back on if need be. I'm 59 yrs old, and have never had one. @@MrTmenzo this was a decade ago… but that’s why they lost me as a customer. At that same time, the only way for my parents to get free checks (that’s how boomers pay) WF made it so the only way they got free checks was to maintain a minimum balance of $20,000! I feel for her, I’ve been in that same position before minus the marriage. Overdraft fees are a different kind of debt, it is more urgent and you feel more overwhelmed because you don’t have the money and each time something is taken out you get charged for it. I don’t blame her for feeling overwhelmed.

Having her kids in private Catholic school is important to her? You know what SHOULD be important to her even more? Getting out of this financial hole. What we WANT and what we NEED to do in order to survive are two different things. Those kids need to be in public school, at least until mommy and daddy can fix their issues.

Comments are saying husband may not want to combine money because she is bad with it but that doesn't make sense. If he is the responsible one then he would be making sure the mortgage and other bills get paid before anything else. But he isn't doing that.

So curious what their total household income is. And how much debt they have besides the mortgage. Surprised Dave & Rachel didn't ask. Hoping for their sake and the kids sake the solution will be as simple as combining everything and working together like adults. Also - send your kids to public school or sell your house before having a negative balance in your bank account.
