Does planning out what you'll say in a retention offer chat or call with American Express even matter? Will it actually increase what they are willing to offer you? That's what I wanted to find out, so I just plainly; without beating around the bush, just asked American Express if I could get a retention offer. So, in this video, I'll be showing off the entire process of asking for a retention offer along with my findings.

Yeah, I usually just ask them directly. In 2022, I was 1/1, but in 2023, I'm 0/2. I think it's YMMV, but I will say that asking up front this year got me a very quick answer both times (no). Glad you were able to get one yourself Calby!

Yes I’ve done both, long scripts and just outright asking. I’ve seen no real difference, both grant a retention offer. Done it on my platinum a couple of years in a row and my Gold. Nice showcase Calby!

Agent I got for the gold card gave me a slightly harder time. I got the usual spiel about the 4x everywhere and the dining credits. When I mentioned the credits being annoying and that other banks had similar earning rates for no annual fee, the agent started going into redemption options. When I rebuffed that answer I was offered the 30,000 point offer as well. I can't believe they tried to sell me that "Different ways to redeem such as shop with points or gift cards might not be available at other banks" as a reason to keep the card (then again, its probably just part of the script).

I’ve never used a script, I’ve seen some of them though. I just ask for the offer and then tell them I don’t see myself spending in the most prominent multiplier within the next year.

Hello Calby, do you have any information on requesting these retention offers twice within 12 months? I came across a post on Reddit where someone asked Amex for a retention offer. Surprisingly, they received one and completed it within three months. Later, around the six-month mark, they approached Amex again and requested another retention offer. To their surprise, Amex granted them a second retention offer, which they completed within three months as well. They decided not to push their luck and ask for a third offer, but I found it quite astonishing that they received two retention offers within a 12-month period. Do you have any insights on this situation?

Personally I don't have experience of this or heard of this before; however, I'm not sure why Amex would do that. Because when you accept a retention offer you have to keep the card open for 12 months or they'll claw back the offer.

I have a retention offer coming up on a gold card in February The last time I ask for a retention offer on an AMEX platinum card didn’t get it so not sure about one on the gold card but I’m shot my shoot Nice information on using a script

I've been an amex member for 22 years. Tried for my first retention offer last week and was given 70k hilton honor points for $3000 spend in 3 months on my aspire card. I spend about $5000 a month on the card so should be no problem.

Just curious, why do you decide to use your Hilton Aspire card for your spend, instead of earning flexible reward points, like Amex MR?

@@LK_EBM I hadn't gotten into transferable points prior to this year so somewhat of a habit. I do like the free nights though and that is how I primarily get my value to cover the annual fee

Hahahaha, I told @AnthonyVenture that I just get straight to the point. No script needed. Either they are going to give you a retention offer or not and you do not have to accept the first offer. That's how I got the 70k MR pts on my Vanilla Platinum

This is my first year having the Amex Gold and my annual fee just posted a few days ago. I have tried to ask for a retention offer twice and both times have been denied. Didn't even bother sending me to a specialist. Just straight up said no hahaha wth Amex
