Squats are the best thing I've ever done to help my cycling, as someone with recurring knee issues, the squats help to stabilise and strengthen so cycling doesn't stress it as much, but also can feel the difference in power when putting down an effort, legs just feel more in control I guess. That's only with kettle bell squats, 15kg for reps not weight. Highly recommended

For those deadlifts, really pull your lats. It helps keep your back straighter and forces stability. Pull your shoulders down and try to round your upper back... you can't. Make sure you're really pulling those shoulders down (engaging the lats). Also, try not to lock out your legs on the leg press, and do not let that butt come off the pad. That's the quickest way to blow a disc.

Curious how you progress with the weight year over year, since you don't lift year round. Do you end up at the same weight as the last year, or do you keep increasing, even though you don't specifically WORK on strength like that? Does on the bike work maintain it or do you need to hit the brute force weight style to get yourself stronger? I lift year round, but just cycle it around racing season. When I'm targeting something important, I'll not lift around that time, but if I'm just jamming in miles and efforts, I stay with the weights. Strength is never a bad thing to have, other than the potential weight you carry on your body.

A sage (or some random grouchy guy staying up to late watching YT videos) once said: It is better to learn lifting technique from a lifter turned cyclist than a cyclist turned lifter. The Hex/Trap bar is designed to put the individual in a more optimal position for the DL, despite this there were at least 3 technique/position flaws in the execution of your deadlift. Also, having your legs in a locked or straight leg position during back extensions omits the glutes from being involved through almost the entire ROM of the lift. In a legs locked position the lowback and hamstrings endure the strain of the lift, if repeated over and over again this will ultimately disrupt the firing sequence of the musculature and make the posterior chain weaker not stronger. Not trying to be the guy who pulls the peloton back up to your solo breakaway, but form and function go hand in hand. Technique is paramount for muscle activation and safety when discussing exercise prescriptions. Forgive me if sounding harsh, I rode in 40 degree rain today.

@paddyotoole2058
@paddyotoole2058 3 жыл бұрын
Not so sure about reducing the risk of injury. It depends on your choice of exercise. Squats and deadlifts for example are probably the two most common exercises in the gym which lead to serious knee and back injuries. Unless you have good flexibility and your form is 100%; they’re very easy to get wrong. There are much safer exercise choices which will achieve pretty much the same results.
@GiorgioCoppolaCycling
@GiorgioCoppolaCycling 3 жыл бұрын
@@paddyotoole2058 Completely agree that they can cause injury but providing the correct form is learnt from day 1 with a lighter weight (or even body weight) risk on injury can be minimised or even avoided providing you are not pushing beyond your limits... I personally have heard of far more injuries in endurance athletes from overuse (knee pain) and a lot of back pain from being on the bike which potentially could have been eliminated with an element of strength training in there program 🤷‍♂️ In terms of alternative movements the deadlift is the biggest bang for buck strength exercise (in my opinion) but with anything comes a risk of injury and the trap bar can help reduce the risk of injury by making it an easier position to maintain and be in but I’m always open to suggestions of exercises which can compare to the deadlift and squat 👌

@@GiorgioCoppolaCycling Re suggested alternatives: Bulgarian split squats are a favourite of mine. Using dumbbells held in one hand or both. No compression of the spine as you have no bar on your back. Single leg exercise also which means you can ensure equal development of both legs (useful if you are neurologically more dominant on one side). Easier to get full range of motion. Easier to go to failure without worrying about bar on your back or needing to be spotted. Also works your core, stabiliser muscles and balance. Easy to progress - just increase dumbbell weight, sets, reps, reduce recovery time etc. Easy to vary focus on hamstrings, glutes or quads by adjusting distance of your foot away from your resting leg. And they are seriously, seriously tough. The King of leg exercises in my view. (Edit - I’ve seen you’re doing these but with a bar - safer with dumbbells imo, no compression of your spine, plus easier to go to failure, plus you don’t have to worry about your clean and jerk form and messing up a rotator cuff to get it up there also 😋)
@GiorgioCoppolaCycling
@GiorgioCoppolaCycling 3 жыл бұрын
@@paddyotoole2058 Some great points and you’re completely right about the Bulgarian split squat it’s epic and extremely versatile as you say, which can be great for beginners who struggle with the correct mechanics for compound movements such as the deadlift and squat, so single leg movements can be safer. But as someone who does have good mechanics/can perform movements safely and with years of strength training I won’t be able to load to the same level needed to continue to build strength. Hence using the deadlift to build strength and single leg exercises as accessories to work on muscle imbalances With regards to compression of the spine with having a bar on your back, there will still be compression of the spine in the suitcase hold with DB, the only way to truely eliminate compression of the spine is by using a belt loaded machine (as the weight is held below the spine) although Db will be more forgiving in terms of position... I personally am unable to load heavy enough (as I have the grip strength of a girl) my point is even if I performed an overhead squat, the bar is not on my back but still will compress the spine, same as Db’s in a suitcase hold.... With regards to the clean and jerk, I would normally take from a rack but I was training with my girlfriend who was doing hip thrusts at the same time and I’m too lazy to unload and load the bar to put it on the rack 😂

For endurance athletes the low rep sets with good amount of torque, but also great power production as "speed x mass" to get the benefits of high motorunit recruitment that has been proven in the science studies many times over. Strength endurance and spesific strentgh are done within the sport training. And it should never compromise actual sport spesific training, so timing is key and building into it.. Good exercises, liked the way there was contrast in high troque and power production, maybe would emphisize more contrast from what I saw on the hops :P
