Hi! Long time fan first time talking. Anyways, my cat passed away recently (we were very closely bonded) and she also had dementia. I noticed it when she was starting to forget where her water dish was. So she'd meow for it and walk to the bathroom meowing for water even though she had a full dish. So I'd pick her up and show her where it was. I kept it in my room because she rarely left it in her last years. Then she forgot her litterbox. So I moved that in to my space. Eventually, she forgot that there was even a space outside of mine. I got really good at reading my cat and her needs if she seemed to forget things. I had to try to do the remembering for her and adjust the space according to her failing memory.

Ka Banning so sorry luv it must be devastating losing your beloved pet as well as seeing it decline. Thing is, my cat is only 8mths old and he does all of those things. I was starting to think he couldn't see properly, he's walking around moaning looking for a drink and I put fresh water in every room now and he still likes his milk.I noticed it was always when I was drinking. In the end, one night I had to put my cup against his cheek so he could feel that it was very warm, a few seconds later he moved his face and promptly hit me across my cheek (Only lightly) but enough to make me think I had hurt him, the cup was only warm. I don't know why I never realised b4, but I gave him some tea in a little container and it was problem solved!! He loves warm sweet tea, I have to let him have some now when I drink it because he was actually crying for it even when I wasn't drinking it. I've had to ask everyone not to give it to him as I don't know wether it's bad for him, I can't imagine it does anything good for him, but he's so cute and there's hardly any things he cries for. This is about 4wks now and he's due for a vet visit so I must ask when we go, that's unless someone else on here tells me a reason to stop giving it to him now.. Oh, and yes, he did get told off for giving me a smack! LOL, aha ( I know I shouldn't laugh) but he's so funny....

The meowing at night really hits me hard. Sitting here with watery eyes. I had the most sweet, intelligent kitty you can imagine. She would also meow in the most agonizing way at night when she got older. I can't remember anymore if i went downstairs to comfort her, i hope i did. I still remember the last time she sat on my lap, looking into her beautiful golden eyes, legs stretched onto my chest. With one look she could communicate so many things, but that moment, she felt happy and relaxed.

my midnight is around 18/19 years old..... got him beds but he lather sleep on my bed. only sleeps on his bed when the fireplace is lit during the winter... he sleeps most of the day but when he wakes up he comes to me and starts screaming.. only way to know what he wants is to follow him.... if he wants to be held he will stay where he is ... if he wants me to come to bed and lay with him he will run to the bedroom ..or if he wants the window open so he can lay in the sun... if he wants the fireplace for heat he will go to the living room and sit in front of the fireplace. if he wants food he will go to his food dish same with the water dish... but if the water dish is full and he screams at it .. it means he wants ice. he is getting a bit annoying because all the time he is awake he screams for me to come to bed and hold him.....but I go anyways and hold him then he lays down with his face in my hand ... then he sleeps then I can leave

I do have a seventeen year old cat that started showing signs of dementia about a year ago. Yes, she does start howling at sundown, before I get the nightlight turned on, she is extremely hard to wake up and when I do wake her up, she is very startled, my poor baby even forgets she has just had a snack (like 10 minutes ago) and demands to be fed again, which I do. Otherwise, she is skinny for an old girl, but in excellent physical health (as per her yearly vet visits and bloodwork and urinalysis'). I go in and cuddle her during her times of howling, she lives on my bed and is in seventh heaven when I do go to bed and she can snuggle with me. I love her to pieces.

@@pilarq7886 Sadly my cat was put to sleep last week. We found out he had a UTI which would've explained his behaviour and us thinking he had dementia. Unfortunately the vet didn't test his urine and when we went to another vet he did,. He was also hyperthyroid. Anyway to cut a long story short they think he had bladder cancer but deteriorated before he could be tested. But what we did was we put led strip lights in the hallway to help guide him. Watch Jackson Galaxy videos on here and he'll talk about having a cat with dementia. His videos are great. Hope your puss is ok, give them plenty of hugs and reassurance. Xx

YES! Our cat was 23 years old when we he finally passed and had this confusion/crying/panic every night of his last couple of years. It was obvious he didn't know where we'd gone or where he was. He'd carry around a sock or toy in his mouth sometimes. I'd pull him up in my bed and he'd go right to sleep ❤😪

Back in time, dementia in pets was less an issue, because they didn't as often live as long as they can now. But I think it's becoming an issue as our pets get more advanced medical care and live longer to develope it; so owners need to be aware and prepared for it. Animals really do suffer from a lot of the same or similar issues as elderly humans if they live long enough. Also - there may be multiple benefits to the christmas lights or nite lights: makes it easier for us two-legged animals to find the bathroom without walking into things, and easier to spot that hairball barf before we step in it !!

@@diamondfire-oi8wd I know this is late, but daylight savings time is a thing in the US & Canada - parts of Europe & Australia do it too, but call it something else I think. Essentially, in the spring, we all change our clocks forward by an hour. Then in the fall, we change them back. I think the idea was for people in the summer to have more hours of daylight after work? But it wouldn't work in the winter, because the sun goes down so early, so we change it back then. The change messes with our animal's schedules, as well as our own internal clocks. People are beginning to think it's a dumb idea - there's research that more accidents happen the morning after the clocks move forward, because we all lose an hour of sleep. But we still do it.

Thanks, Jackson. You're talking about something that I've suspected about cats for quite sometime. I took in a cat who couldn't move with her family, hardly realising that she'd be my feline companion for the next twenty years. I could probably write a novella length manuscript about her behaviours over the final few years of her life, including eventually failing to recognise me in the sense that she would apparently mistake one my close male friends for me, became incontinent, and eventually, she became unable to walk. Towards the end of her life, she could never find the litter box and made a short daily circuit around my home, crawling from one place to another to sleep. Watching her gum down wet cat food was somewhat difficult. I made the last night of her life the best that I possibly could for her and had her put down the following day.

Talking about older cats having dementia, getting lost due to losing their sight and hearing. I appreciate your videos as they have helped me to understand my kitten better. I appreciated your illustration of what an older cat may experience and when you started rocking the camera to clarify your illustration, it clearly showed what I experience on a daily basis. I inherited Cerebellum Spinal Degeneration from my mother. Cerebellum Spinal Degeneration is a generic term that covers a wide range of neurological disorders which includes MS. The branch my family is on is rare, extremely rare. There is very little known about this particular branch. There has been found 12 people in the world with this disorder and most of them are in my family. We are 5 generation starting with my mother as for recording the ailment. With each generation we learn a little more about it. Some Symptoms we are born with. Example: Nonverbal Learning Disorder. Some symptoms we trigger through life's experiences. Example: in my case "Vertigo" was triggered by a ride on the roller coaster in Toronto in July 1985. When I got off that roller coaster I was never the same. As my balance was effected. I have to go down stairs or downhill backwards. For forty years I could not get anyone to listen to me. Finally 2 years ago I walked into my doctor's office totally off balance. His first thought was a brain tumor. He sent me for a CT scan, which of course came back as negative. Still my doctor did not understand when I tried to tell him that I have the Gordanier Syndrome, despite the fact that he treated mom, until her death 4 years ago. He sent me to yet another neurologist. Finally I now have my diagnosis, but unfortunately the files for my disorder is now in archives and neither my family doctor nor my neurologist are able to access the files as they relate to my brother's children. I appreciated the information you provided through this video that cats and dogs can also experience symptoms similar to mine in the later stage of life.

He howls at random times day & night, & usually acts like he's lost. Once he hears my voice, he's OK. Also need to have your cat given a thorough vet check because dementia can be caused by a urinary tract infection in humans. Symptoms that seem to be dementia in cats can actually be high blood pressure (or sudden blindness caused by HBP) and many vets dont check BP routinely. You need to ask about it. Sometimes a chronic illness (eg kidney disease) can cause howling at night.

She yowls a bit anyway, but I just tell her "everything's ok, Cleo" a couple of times and she calms down. She doesn't seem to have other dementia-type symptoms, so maybe she just wants attention after I go to bed. Her previous family had kids who developed allergies, according to the paperwork, but her night yowls kind of sound like a toddler, so I wonder if they just got sick of not knowing whether it was their kid or their cat looking for attention at night. Anyway, I love her.

Thanks for covering this topic This has been at the back of mind for a while concerning my 17 year old male. But I do think it's just reduced vision in his case. He doesn't cry when lights go out, just kind of hangs out in less places and doesn't leave my bedroom much.

Our baby had dementia, as the vet put it "Kittyzimers". She would sleep on my sisters bed because it was the sunniest spot but would get 'sun-downers' every afternoon. She would stand in the hallway yowling for us and when she saw someone she would trot after us and be fine but then often wander back into the hall and do it again. It was horrible having to hear her cries and know there wasn't much we could do to help. She also pooped in my wardrobe a few times. I think she left my sisters room but would get lost in the hallway and decide my wardrobe was an acceptable replacement because she couldn't find the litter box.

Before my 19 year old cat passed this year we joked that he had kitty dimensia cuz he would wake up from a nap and wander the house yelling, like he didn't know where we were until we called for him and he'd come running. He would also "forget" how to drink out of his water dish, scooping it all on the floor and licking his paws instead. But at the same time he would go through the effort of climbing a chair, table, and 4 foot fish tank to shove his head under the lid to get a drink. I always wonder if he was just stubborn and wanted fish tank water THAT bad or if he was confused by his own water dish

I believe my cat had Some dementie too she never meowed. But when she got older she would just stand in the middle of the room meowing for nothing. When I stood next to her and asked her what was wrong she looked at me like oh yeah. I remember you and she would stop. She also forgot how to use the litter box. She would poop over the edge of the box 😂. Loved that cat ❤️

I wish I had known this. My lifelong friend Charlie started this around 20 yo. She was always a vocal lady, but now some nights she would yowl like a mating bear, scared the heck out of my son’s friend. I thought she missed us at night, but never knew how bad it was for her. Now I feel guilty. She lived to be 22.

My cat, Jaina, is 11 months old and im so frazzled on how nice she is? All thanks to you!! Since we got her at the shelter 8 months ago, she does this kind of rolling the 'R' noise when she walks around anywhere, and when i do it back she runs to me or does the noise louder. Sometimes she will bring a hair tie to me, drop it in my lap and then do the noise again, then we will play fetch for like 30 minutes or so. She also is surprisingly nice, as in when i had to give her a bath she did meow but never bit or scratched me. Jaina lets me cut her nails with no issue, lays on top of me at night and does this thing where she nuzzles her face into my hand while sleeping, and she likes to sit in a chair next to me while im gaming or on the computer. since we got her, and a little before i would always watch your videos on how to get cats to love you, how to take care of, mistakes cat owners make, and other things about respecting the cats space and learning how they specifically show love in their own way and they have healped a loooooooooooot, so thanks

Update on Mango:. He's a lot happier and not howling quite so much. I'm letting him sleep at the foot of my bed and jump up on the bed if I hear him start howling. He eventually moves somewhere else to get comfortable and go to sleep after he calms down. He was originally banned from my bed because he was throwing up on it and everywhere else. He's not throwing up anymore, except for an occasional hairball. It became difficult when I had to launder my bedding every Saturday. Not anymore. We're both happy! 😸

Thank you for this very insightful tip Jaxson. I had no idea animals could go through dementia or Alzheimer's disease. It got me thinking about my kitty again. I got her when she was 6 months old from a private owner. (9 1/2) She's had always seemed to be on the less fortunate scale when it comes to reacting. Sometimes when her brother Spice (10yrs) and sister Myla (2yrs) pick on her she just sits a meows but doesn't do anything. Is it possible for cats to lack self protection skills because of some form of cognitive disability? I rescue orphaned bottle baby kittens and have had cats all my life but I have never had a kitty quite like her before.♡

Older cats with chronic hypertension will also vocalize at night. Cats 10 years and older should have biannual exams and blood pressure checks. Treatment is vital, otherwise kidney failure, or worse, saddle thrombus, is imminent If your cat has hypertension and is given appropriate treatment for it, the night howling should cease.👍

Sometimes doing the right thing hurts. But it is still the right thing. I rescued a couple of old cats. Was not certain of their ages but old, and looking old. After a couple of years of reasonably good health One demented, I did all the right things, but when it got to the stage where he was just crying ALL the time, the vet quietly suggested it was time to help the cat pass on. The vet said the cat had all the classic signs of dementia. There were no signs of physical causes. But the cat was plainly suffering distress.

Now that I think about it, our old cat probably did have dementia cuz he'd start meowing and screaming very loudly at night whenever he went somewhere in other room. But once you like, called his name or walked to him, he'd just look at me and meow calm as if saying "Oh, there you are"

We used to have a cat, at some point when he was around 15 years old he became very forgetful, he would be meowing at the door asking to go outside, then as soon as he stepped outside he would be standing there, utterly confused as to how he got there or what he was doing there, turn around and walk back inside, or, if the door had already closed, he would start meowing again, in summertime when the door was always open during the day this was not too big of a deal, but as it got colder and that door stayed shut, he would be meowing there all day long, because these episodes of going in/out could last for hours sometimes, he was a really awesome cat though, fond memories.

I had a cat who passed away around 4 years ago from liver cancer, he was around 15 and had faids, he definitely lived longer than anyone thought he would. He had dementia and every night when I got home from work I'd pick him up and carry him around while I got myself (and him) dinner, he would join me by climbing on my back while I was doing yoga, curl up on my chest when I was watching TV, and come bedtime I'd wake him up from his nap and carry him into my room so he didn't get lost in the night. He was(is) my best friend and the best cat I've ever had. It was heart breaking putting him down but I'm glad he went out the way he did, right by my side and full of treats x

4 years ago we moved into a house with a basement. Our girl cat, then 15, promptly went downstairs and started yowling, something she had never done. She kept doing it - morning, noon and night - every time she went downstairs. It was really distressing because she sounded like a lost soul. I investigated and found a place where she clearly napped, against a wall. A friend with an elderly, nearly blind dog had to rescue him whenever he encountered her backyard fence, because he didn’t know how to get away from that apparently (to him) dead end. I wondered if my kitty, who has cataracts, was experiencing the same kind of confusion when she got to the basement wall. We moved to an apartment a year later and she continues to yowl. But now she does it before she lies down for a nap, which happens often since she is a cat, after all. She may have been wailing in the basement for the same reason, not because she was confused or lost. I dunno, this feels like a terrible explanation of my question. Can anyone help anyway? Thanks 🙏

I had a Chihuahua mix who developed dementia. She went blind first, and then lost her hearing. Still, she was OK because she had her sister with her. After a while though, she started getting stuck in corners, behind doors, and around furniture. She would start crying, and we'd have to come and rescue her. It always got worse at sundown. Finally it was just too heartbreaking, and we had to let her go. I brought her blanket back and put it into her sister's bed. I left it there until the scent faded away, and the other dog seemed to get past the grief stage. The other dog lived another 6 years, and finally died in her sleep at the age of 21.

my family has a 20 year old cat that I brought indoors last summer named Marshmallow (he's doing very well, and he's unofficially my cat now) who had trouble like Roach. what I started doing to try to help was at first, I put a little light from the $1 store in the corner of our L-shaped hallway so he'd have a directional point between the kitchen and my room, and we keep every other door shut except mine. later on, the light burned out, but by that time we had gotten motion-activated night lights for the kitchen (some of us would wake up very early for work) and I had set up my room where it was very accessible to him and he had established his scent there too. Nowadays, the only time he shouts is when he's looking for me or wants me to be in my room with him. There's a chance that he wants me in there because he's forgotten that I'm still in the house, just a different room, and he's panicking, or he's learned that that will get me to come over most times unless I'm actually gone (family tells me he does it when I'm gone too) but I generally do my best to keep him comfortable and feeling secure as he's aging.

he's very attached to me, with his favorite places being my lap, my nightstand (and the stepstool by it to help him up,) the cushion I put on the table by my bed (which has a staircase going up, which offers different options for stair-size compared to my nightstand) and under my desk where I have a lightweight cat bed.

My parent's elderly cat (19 years old!) does this. I always assumed she was calling out for her previous owner, who recently passed away. But this makes a lot more sense, since she's also developed terrible cataracts in her advanced age. I wish we could take the poor girl in to have eye surgery, but she's so frail, I doubt she'd survive the procedure. Another sign is that she's been forgetting to use her litter box. She isn't incontinent and doesn't appear to have any bowel problems, as she does this deliberately.

I had a cat, Grace, growing up I was really close with. We did everything together when I was a kid and she slept in my room. When I went out to college and came back, I realized she didn’t know me anymore. She looked at me like I was a stranger. That was my first experience with cat dementia. It made me cry so much because I had essentially lost her. She became increasingly confused and not like herself. She was an “outdoor cat” and one day she went out and never came back. I miss you Gracie.

We keep salt lamps lit all over the house, and little night lights in the sockets. The salt lamps are very soothing and it's nice for us to have some light if we need to go downstairs in the middle of the night - not to get blinded by a bright light. Works for cats AND humans.

Salt lamps are very dangerous for cats. Cats like to lick them but too much salt is toxic. It won't take a lot to do some serious harm, so I would suggest swapping them for ordinary night lights.

Thank you! This is exactly what my cat has been doing more and more the last couple of years, especially since we've been forced to move a couple of times. I have been calling it "toweling" but it sounds just like the caterwauling sound you played in one of your videos about vocalizations. It's a very loud, deep, resonating sound he only makes at night and it's been hard to interpret. I thought he might be announcing his presence in a strange neighborhood but he kept doing it after we moved and now he doesn't get out of the apartment. I think he may be feeling lost, not necessarily from dementia but just being unfamiliar with his environment. I know cats like stability when it comes to their sense of place and that's been disrupted. I still am not entirely sure what's going on but this video had given me a better idea so thanks.

My 20 (? ish) cat has just developed dementia - frantic incessant yowling when he wakes up can't see me. He has also started jumping in the bath to yowl when he wants something..... but that might have something to do with the great amplified acoustic of the bath. He has never jumped in the bath in his whole life until the dementia kicked in - he was peeing in the bathroom instead of his tray, so I placed another another tray in the bathroom and that fixed that. Still very healthy - he had his senior's check recently, some kidney failure but it seems to be under control. There is also yowling in at 2.30 in the morning. BTW - age is unknown - I have had him for 11 years and I got him from some friends who had found him a couple of years before that as a stray - but definitely a lost older pet - no microchip at the time - only an ear tattoo to say he was desexed. Love your show but here in the Australian suburbs we do tend to let our cats outside (except at night) - the biggest danger is paralysis ticks.

My old nineteen year old cat who passed away in 2016 started doing nightyowls. I don't know if she necessarily had dementia, she already had other issues like having become deaf and having severe arthritis in the hips and legs. I was living in a very small room apartment and left her at the house she grew up in with my dad's, but it was becoming clear she got either lost in it or lonely. She stopped the sad yowling mostly when I took her with me. Sometimes a sad little toiletyowl, but I'd pat her and take her back in the living sleep kitchen dump and she seemed atleast more at ease.

Years ago a stray female kitty stopped by for a visit, a bit of food and someplace to take a cat nap, once she was full and well rested she simply got up and walked away, no thank you, no "by your leave" she just left. At 4am the next morning as my bf was leaving for work he looked down and noticed in the basket we had left for the cat the day before was now full of 4 NEWBORNS (about 3 days old) and the cat coming around the corner if the house. Apparently she decided the day before that we were good humans (and suckers) and she brought us her babies as a thank you. They all moved in and we kept three babies: Priss, had PU and had to have "gender reassignment surgery" by shortening his ureter, and cancer which he lived with for his entire 15 years, FuzzyCat (the only long hair) ended up with pancreatitis for several years treated with special food and supplements but his last day he ended up with a saddle thrombus which was the most horrific experience EVER, and Tigger, she was very "special" and had what I can only describe as, kitty autism. She passed due to CHF. Tigger was nonstop, didn't like to be touched, never made eye-contact, no idea when she ate because we never saw her eat but she was in perfect physical health until the CHF. Her behaviors were nearly identical to the adults and kids I worked with who were actually on the spectrum.
