If you land on a divot IN THE FAIRWAY - you should be allowed a drop. WHY should you be penalized for hitting a good shot?

Yeah...why you should hit your ball in a divot caused by a lazy guy/gal who did not repair his/her divots? lt would be nice to have a USGA rule to penalize anyone who doesn't repair his/her divot.

What consitutes a divot ? Is a bare lie a divot ? Just another way for people to cheat. Play it as it lies and get on with it, we don't need to slow the game down and increase cheating. What if I hit a poor shot, a nasty thin with an iron and it end in a divot on the fairway, do I need to play it as it wasn't a good shot ? Who decides what is a good shot ? It is what it is, hit the ball and move on. Its not possible to make a fair rule from this situation.

Larger grips are also very beneficial for senior golfers who no longer have the hand strength of their younger days. I'm 74 and still a single figure handicap I put a Winn DryTac grip on my driver a couple of years ago and benefited immediately from longer and straighter drives. Over time, I will install these grips on all my clubs.

Excellent fellow golfer----I use to love the first time I played in 1979 where you could use clubs which molded the grips to show where your hands should be. Not legal now. But it did teach me at the time to get great at golf in 2021.

most golfers only use 7 clubs especially since the advent of the 28-degree rescue club.... i have no need for a 3 and 5 wood nor 3-4-5 irons

I went from a standard to a midsize golf grip and found that I don’t grip the club as hard. This helps my arthritic hands.

Interesting comments. I was wondering if should try larger grips as I have slightly bigger hands than normal I suppose. I wear an extra large glove. And I was hoping they might help to not aggravate my carpal tunnel so much, which is a bit like arthritis. My hands tend to go a bit numb if I play too much bloody golf. Really need to go and get it operated on I think.

I have arthritis and prefer a midsize grip. I quit wearing a glove about a year ago and fond it has giving me softer feel when chipping and putting.

I just changed mine to a mid sized putter grip and it helped my greatly. I’m hitting my drives tons straighter.

Two rule changes; stroke and distance for out of bounds. To speed the game up, just drop from where the ball went out, take a penalty stroke and hit. A ball landing in a divot on the fairway should be ground under repair with a free lift no closer to the hole. I replaced all my grips this year to Golf Pride CP2 oversize and have been very happy with the results.

There is a course south of Minneapolis where there is so many water hazards so you get to use the lateral water hazard rules. If you hit a ball that far off line, on most courses , it would be out of bounds. Back to the tee box and hit another. At Willengers, you save a lot of time and speed up the game making it more fun.

That rule has been changed, if you go OB you may take a drop in the fairway where it went out and take a two stroke penalty.

Juanmccain is sort of correct. The rule has not changed but they have a local rule (E-5) that would need to declared in play. IMHO, though, it is too complex. Ideally it would be played like a penalty area (e.g. determine entry point, 2 club lengths). Instead you determine entry point, determine closest fairway, then take two club lengths).

@@chumb01 E-5 causes more problems than it solves. Here in N. Nevada we recommend that clubs not use it. It also affects handicapping for the round(lowering strokes received)

That may speed up the game but a one stroke penalty is almost cheating. To get back to the same spot off the tee would be your third shot, making your shot from near where you O.B, shot landed, your fourth shot !

I have been using the JumboMax since they came out. My consistent straightness is phenomenal with these XL grips. I will never use a small grip again. I take it one step further with my driver and fairway woods; I use the reverse taper Enlow grips. They are great too. Thanks for the demo. Great stuff.

Great work! I had done the putter grip maneuver on my hybrids, initially, to chip with and also naturally hit some normal distances on rest of course. Wow my hook calmed down immensely with more consistency! I used the Lamkin putter grip more normal size but with flat side and a swelling at top end allowing for better secure grip with left hand for right hand player. I like the way you approach the game of golf for this 77y/o duffer-subscribed.

Tried out mid size cp2 pro on my srixon driver and wow! Baby fade/ straight. Best part is that I can really go after it and not be penalized. Did have to add lead tape to bring back 1 SW point. Thanks again!

Good video. I myself am switching from standard grip size to midsize grip and found I am more relaxed holding the club. Looking forward to trying it out on the range. Also, years ago when putting a new grip on my putter I twisted it some, felt more natural in my hands and it works for me.

I think the reason you hit to the right of center with the putter grip is because you placed the flat part of the putter grip at the 12 O' clock position which would promote a weaker grip & right of center results. You should have aligned the flat portion of the grip with your normal grip top hand thumb position, say 1 or 2 O' clock. I think if you would have indexed properly your results have been better. Just a thought.

I have been concidering doing this very same thing for quite some time now as I also have arthritic hands. Using standard size grips seems to make me want to grip more tightly and that creates tension in my swing. I will definitely change the grip on my driver and try out a few of my irons aswell. I am surprised that this has been the only lesson I know of that covers this subject. Great lesson.

I would add that I'm surprised that someone who plays and tinkers as much as you do doesn't use an air compressor to install and swap grips. Saves time and makes life A LOT simpler! Thanks for what you do!

Hey from a data perspective, Have a thought... with only 10 shots in each group you might want to take your best and worst shots out of each group. I bet the circles change a bunch. Cool video. When I was first starting out I basically had a death grip on my driver. Fitter set me up with a larger grip to take out the tension in my hands. This helped teach me to loosen up my grip to get the club face to close but my miss was always a fade/slice. After I learned what I needed to know about grip pressure (took forever for me to change) I dropped back to standard and with less tension the club face would release correctly. This whole experience helped me learn about grips tension and how to control the face through impact. Now I rarely slice and I’m turning the ball over for a nice draw when the tee shot requires it. I've just changed my iron grips to a smaller size. I have always been a "hands" player, and felt that the grips I was using were inhibiting my hand movements. I found I was pushing shots, and when I tried to use my hands through the ball to square the club, I'd either smother the shot, or duck hook it, or both. With the smaller grips, I'm getting a lot cleaner strike, and regained a bit of lost distance. So I'm happy.

went jumbo here on all mine... even took an inch plus on driver shaft... had to strengthen my right hand grip a little stop the fade/slice... give it a try... love the larger grip!

Wow! This is a very cool video MSG because I started trying out using Jumbomax LG on my irons and XL on the woods and hybrid last summer and they helped improve my confidence and distance on each of my club about 15-20 yds. It convinced me after I hit a large bucket of balls with just a 7 iron and PW that i could control my club face better. A lot of teaching pros and a lot of tournament players i talked to didn't really like the idea but it worked out for me and now i am very happy with my game and feel i have a better chance in the competition. I even put the round jumbo LG on my putter and hopefully, it is legal in competition cos the guy who installed it said it is legal 😃. I saw the same ball patterns similar to your testing and just worked on how to hold my grip and let it ripped and it would go farther than my regular grip that i used to hit. The coolest thing was i didn't feel like i swung hard at all. It may not work for everyone but i wish they would put the big grip on a demo so golfers would get a chance to try it out first. Just a word of caution, i would recommend not to change all your grip at once because after you hit with the big grip, you can mess up when you go back to using your regular grip. I am so glad to see this video and thank you so much for making this clip MSG!. Cannot wait to see what you have next 😃👍👍👍

I changed all my irons to midsize grips and got more consistent ball flight with that. And, as you said, feeling more relaxed after not squeezing the grips. I consider changing my driver as well, but after this clip I don’t need to consider anymore. I’ll just do it!

The thing that I found with different grips to affect my drives was whether or not the grips were corded. Much better driving results with corded grips than with tacky or tour wrap grips.

I stopped wearing a glove 30+ years ago and I was using corded grips already and have continued ever since. I have never missed the gloves a bit. However, in cold and wet weather I wear rain gloves on both hands, The grips I use are next size larger than standard and corded, love them.

Divots in the Fairway... three rules apply: man made immovable obstruction, ground under repair and an embedded lie. Either way you should move the ball and not be penalized for a good tee shot, just take the closest relief no closer to the pin. I'll be changing my grips soon, interesting video for helping my choice. Think it's wrong not to have flat sided grips available for all clubs.

good video - thumbs up...i recently went to a jumbo grip on all my clubs and it does take some time to assimilate...however, after several rounds, can't imagine going back to a regular grip...too skinny/thin...feels more comfortable and secure with bigger grips. regarding rules - if my friend lands in a gravel area...i always allow a drop in the grass as to NOT damage his clubs hitting off the gravel.

TL;DR - You can watch TXG for a more in depth explanation, but essentially smaller grip you'll close the face more and the larger the grip the more the face will remain open. You can't use the flat grip because it is a swing assist tool on any club that isn't the putter.

I thought it must be something like that. Had he had the flat spot one or two degrees to the right, he would have been hitting it straight in the middle of the fairway (probably with a baby draw). It would be easier to grip the club exactly the same every time if there was a flat spot. Now if it was allowed, it'd be the same opportunity for everyone, so it wouldn't bother me though.

Yea pretty pretty dumb Mr. SG can’t wrap his head around the fact that, if you want to do dumb stuff like putt with a driver or use your putter off the tee box; USGA doesn’t care because you’re not giving yourself an unfair advantage/and/or you can’t take away the essentials needed to be good. If you want to make it harder on yourself by using your putter off the tee, nobody cares, but when you’re adding an unfair advantage then it’s not legal. Putter grips are not allowed on drivers; pretty straightforward and common sense rule.

And Mr Shortgame is the guy who said in an earlier vid that he thought lines on a ball should not be legal because it’s an alignment aid when putting. He said no lines should be allowed on ball.

*...it is a swing assist tool on every club that isn't a putter* That's not true. It assists the "swing" (rotation to and through the ball) of a slow, abbreviated putter stroke just as much as it does that of a driver by giving feedback on the clubface at impact. No difference. If you're a purist, just say so and we can have that debate. But don't try and say the SAME THING has some obvious justifying discrepancy. A stroke's just a short swing.

Put a jumbo max ultralight small size grip on the driver a couple weeks ago. I struggle with hooking the ball and figured I’d give it a whirl. Worked like magic, now my misses are much more playable.

Appreciate the commitment to making the video - that’s a lot of grip switching! I’ve seen the TXG guys test out grips before and for what it’s worth, they use an air compressor to pop those suckers on and off quickly. Really interesting attempt with the putter grip! Haven’t seen that done before and it seems plausible that you might be able to square things up better with that setup..!

I’ve been wanting to put a putter grip on all my clubs for a long time, I’m not on tour so it wouldn’t matter. If you use an air compressor you can take the grips off and on real fast.

@@chr970lol nope but I will some day :) The question is, if it’s the way to keep our club squared to the ball and more speed than why not make it legal? I say squared or hexagon grips would solve a lot of problems there’d be no more slipping in the hands by far for any level maybe. Too my knowledge I think the putter grips are to short or the wrong hole size. Just for fun I’ll look at it and if it can be done 🤔 but I’m pretty sure I looked into it already. I’m retired I’ll give it another shot. Thank you

super helpful video Mr. Shortgame, love that you think outside the box! Thanks for doing this. I ordered some irons, and they sent me ones with a large grip by mistake. I've always played standard grip (I wear a medium size mens golf glove). I went to get them regripped, but stopped at the range on the way there, just to see how they felt. Good thing I didn't get them regripped - from 3 iron through attack wedge, oversized grips work great for me. My swing is different than most though, I use a baseball grip and have a very vertical swing plane. (I use stiff shafts and hit the ball on average 165 with 7 iron). Switching to oversized grips works really well for me with irons...I have a tighter dispersion on my shots now. The question is should I switch to larger grips on my woods..I think I'm gonna try it! Can always go back to standard if it doesen't work.

I disagree personally, the number 1 rule in golf is play the ball as it lies, hitting the green doesn’t guarantee you an easy putt, hitting the fairway doesn’t guarantee you a good lie. Just my opinion, what do you think?

Matt Robertson I understand but why have a nice cut short fairway, if the reward is hitting out of a 1" hole. Might as well mow it all at 2" high, then you won't get as many divots

@@nikej24 I think golf's not meant to be easy, you get good guys and bad lies and you take what you're given, that's the beauty of it, maybe we don't just ask for relief when it gets more difficult in my opinion. It can suck but when you it a good shot from a bad lie it's even better

Idealistically, these should be filled in with sand or dirt by players. "Divots" shouldn't really exist out on the fairways if everyone takes care of the golf course; a good habit to get into.

Would installing the putter grip slightly counter clockwise help in squaring up the club ? Also did the club face feel more stable at impact with the jumbo max or putter grip?

It did for me, I accidently put a putter grip on my Topflite driver (only been golfing for a month or so, and have no concept on the rules) and it's a bit offset. I'm hitting that about 5x more consistently than my other driver (Talyormade M4) and it's funny, but pisses me off that my $40 driver is more consistent than my $350 driver 😂😂😂

Took up golf at 73 years old and after 4 decades in construction/roofing in top physical shape and using banner, nail gun, snips, swas etc the first thing I noticed was the round shape of golf club grip was different from 90% of tool grips. So I changed the grip on my driver and shaped it to match the grip on my framing hammer. Immediate good results, seldom slice and easier "feel" of the club head and ball. Then I am told this is not allowed in tournament play! Well, nearing 74 and starting to outplay my 75 to 85 year old mates and never going to play tournament golf I am keeping my "illegal" grips and spend far less time in the woods hunting for my ball . Good tools handles are ergonomically designed to fit the hand, assist in keeping hammer head, drill etc square to whatever is being struck, drilled, screwed. Ever part of a golf club has over the decades, being designed, engineered to provide max performance. That is with the exception of the golf club grips which for some odd reason (tradition perhaps?) the round, skinny grip remains sacrosanct? Good video 👍👍 🖖

Your STANDARD grip proved more consistent, possibly due to feeling “normal” as opposed to using a different thickness and causing a different and odd grip feel. Remember though the weight shift (increased gram weight) on the larger grips reduces the driver SWING WEIGHT. This accounts for it “feeling” lighter because of the counter balance in reduction of head weight, it may for average golfers reduce distance mostly due to the lower swing weight and club head speed, but in doing so for average players after they get used to the change may find more control. The test revealed thicker grips reduced the ability for “loose” wrists and therefore balls going more right. The test was very good but it may prove that as Bryson is reaching for new horizons, once you get used to the differences in feel, a thicker grip it may help certain players but I suspect not all... just remember fatter grips both reduce the freedom of wrist turn and reduced swing weight ... but if the gram weight can match the weight of your standard grip gram weight AND you adjust to the grip thickness ... you may be up to something that SOME GOLFERS ... not all ... may find beneficial ... BRYSON and TIME may reveal its effect! One thing you can bet ... look out ... R&A & USGA will not like what just happened in the Open. Bryson says he is going to try next a 48” driver !!!

But really the Super Stroke was just as consistent as the fat one minus on bad shot that made the dispersion ring that big. And his standard grip was also all over the place when compared to the bigger ones, so with a little fine tuning that fat grip would probably be the best for him (out of the legal ones).

I think it's ridiculous that the talking heads and old time golfers in the media, are talking about how golf courses are being overpowered. The fact that only one player at the US Open managed to stay under par tells me that skill and finesse are still extremely important. I'm a mid handicapper. I love seeing the elite golfers do things I will never achieve. It's why I watch any elite level athlete. So, why do the old farts want to reign them in? They're not using performance enhancing drugs, they're just playing better, after working really hard at it. Bryson's win should finally shut the mouths of those media types who mocked him on live TV for his physical and clearly mental gains. It's like when the Fosbury flop was used for the first time in high jump. Everyone scoffed at first, until the competition got consistently destroyed.

I use the jumbomax grip on my driver...they have an ultralight model that does not change the swing weight and that is what I use. Also, I wear a medium large glove and was told by the guys at jumbomax to try the small, which is plenty big for my hands. So, hand size will definitely affect the overall performance of the large grips also; you need to figure out what works best for you. BTW, I love being able to hit my driver as hard as I can and not fear going left and I'm hitting at least 10 yards longer on average.

Jumbo grips leads to needing a bigger golf bag. It's a tight fit with GP Jumbo grips in a standard carry bag.

I used the Jumbo grip the same style as your 1st grip Mcc4. It really feels a lot better than the original grip which was standard for TaylorMade M2 irons.

Nice video! I put a jumbomax ultralite on my driver and fairway wood about 6wks ago- has been a success so far. The consistent ball flight i get on my fairway wood is so far from the crapshoot i use to get. Driver has been better than my normal grip, but not the lightswitch like fairway wood. I have the size small on fairway and medium on driver. Will be switching to small size on driver.

2" masking tape only has glue on one side only. Might work if you swing speed is less than 70 mph. You start swinging that club hard and the grip will shift. LMAO.

I changed to a jumbo grip and i was pounding the ball... changed back to the +4 standard since i got a 13 pack of them to match my new set if irons. But will be going bacm to the jumbo as my hands are bigger than average. Awesome vid 👌

This experiment was done along with many others relating to golf in the 70's, I think the book was called 'The search for the perfect swing' having read it I pretty much knew what you were going to find with the grip changes.

Grip size and weight has no REAL impact on swingweight. Yes, you will get a different reading on the swingweight scale with a heavier or lighter grip but you are only 'tricking' the swingweight scale. The swingweight scale was developed with a standard 50 grams as the grip weight and to give a measurable value to how heavy the clubhead feels in the club set-up. Whilst a heavier or lighter grip effects the static weight of a club it doesn't effect head feel because you hinge the club from your hands.

I have been moving all my grips up to a midsize super strike grip and it feels a lot more comfortable. I have a longer hand then most and the midsize give me more control with less grip strength. Thanks for the vid and I agree some of the rules are just plain dumb and almost psychotic.

So true! If you hit the fairway you should be rewarded with a good lie. Hit off of the fairway and you’re penalized. The divot rule makes no sense to me.

Good video. I’ve tried a few different sizes but a standard I’ve found works best. I couldn’t stop the smaller grip from turning over without holding off my swing. The larger one just didn’t feel right and maybe I should have given it a better shot but I lost confidence right after the first shot. Maybe I’ll put one on a backup shaft and play around with it.

A larger grip actually fixed my driver slice. For the longest time I couldn’t figure out why my driver face would not close or square up at impact. I was using the drivers std size grip with tapered profile. Once I switched to Golf Pride mcc +4 With an additional tape wrap it corrected the slice. 2 theories for me: 1) either I was gripping way too hard because my grip was too small so i couldn’t release or 2) on my downswing my driver would twist and slip in my hands.

My theory is it’s all in the down swing because the number on reason most people slice is cause the leave the club face open and I can bet that having a bigger grip will help you by making it easier to close the face on the down swing acting like a leaver but with it being bigger and your hand open more it makes the club roll over in your hand easier that’s my theory

With the flat face of the putter grip, you should try it canted 45degrees to where the flat part is where it would lie in the fingers of your right hand. Would be interesting to see those results.

As far as the dumb rules of golf go...if your playing partner has you move your ball mark, it should be the person who requests the mark to be moved that has the responsibility (not just common courtesy) to make sure the mark gets moved back and incur a penalty if it’s not.

Awesome video. I switched to a midsize grip a while back and I felt more comfortable holding the club at address and felt more control throughout the swing. I wear a size 24 glove to give more perspective to the benefits (for me at least) of a slightly larger grip size than standard.

Agree on the grip rule. Would love to try putter grips on some other clubs. I always regrip my new clubs to Golf Pride CP2 wrap midsize. I found I hit the ball straighter most of the time with this grip.

Added the Jumbomax ultralite a few weeks ago & couldn't be more stoked with the results! Felt weird at first, but got used to it pretty quick. As a leftie, my misses were mostly pushed to the left side of the fairway. Now the ball flight is straighter & sometimes even a draw or two! Now playing shots from the right side (which rarely happened) now!

I got a compressor, and I use JumboMax grips, believe me, you need liquid on the tape to get that grip on. I use the jelled hand sanitizers instead of solvent, it stays wet longer while you get the grip on, and a lot cheaper than the solvent!

Dumb rule , not being allowed to move your ball from a divot or sand trap that wasnt racked and sitting in a foot print. I use mid size grips allows me less pressure and feels more solid.

lol! I have sank a few putts with my driver. One time was for an eagle on a short par 4 to win a bet. And I use to have the small jumbomax grip on my driver and 3 wood. I felt like I could feel where the club head was a little better and It did improve my dispersion, but I noticed I seem to lose some distance. I think you should be able to use whatever grip you want on the driver.
