THE INFORMATION IN THIS VIDEO IS OUTDATED. WE ARE CURRENTLY WORKING ON AN UPDATED VIDEO FOR YOU!
How do we figure out if our client needs a permit to remove their tree?
Follow along with Seattle Tree Care’s co-owner, Peter, as he visits trees in Magnolia and Queen Anne and explains some common tree situations that require a Seattle city permit for removal.
Peters shares the first questions an ISA Certified and Tree Risk Assessment Qualified Arborist asks when determining if a tree removal permit is needed:
1. How big is the tree? (00:43)
2. Is the tree on city-owned land? (02:06)
3. Is the tree in an Enviornmentally Critical Area? (03:03)
4. What kind of tree is it? (04:06)
If you think your tree may need a permit, make sure you hire a Certified Arborist who’s familiar with Seattle city permits to help you evaluate the situation. Fines for cutting down a protected tree are steep!
Have a question about your tree project? Get a free drop-by assessment from one of our ISA Certified Arborists today: seattletreecare.org/request-a-visit/

The moral of this story is. You may have bought the ground but you truthfully never own it. You need city approval for everything. New water heater, need a permit. Electrical upgrades, need a permit. Add a porch to your back yard, yup need a permit. In regards to this video I've even seen where cities refuse to allow a home owner the ability to take down a dangerous tree that keeps having branches break out of it. If you live in a city. You never truthfully own your home.

I'm bored so I wanted to rant about this too. I live in Cedar Park, Texas. Very old area from the 1950s on a half-acre lot, with no HOA. I was reviewing what I can do and can't do on my property without a permanent and I found it to be very reasonable, but you are right when I saw some of the things it kind of bothered me and reminded me, I don't truly own this land as in I can't do "ANYTHING" I want. It kind of sucks like rebuilding my back deck attached to my house I will need a permeant because I'm also extending it. Little interesting things like fencing for the entire city can only be made of certain materials (Though granted the list is pretty long.), no fence over six foot(I think back fence can be 8 foot), you can have a fence in the front yard but it has to be easily seen through so a bar type fence. Pretty much nothing with a foundation can be built within 8 feet of the property line. Overall I found most of these reasonable, though my only issue was I wanted to put my shed as far back as possible for storage and use a concrete foundation because if I'm going to build something it's gunna last. When I rented a house from an HOA you had ZERO control (I know I rented but these rules also applied to the home owner.). Your house had to look like the others so only certain paint colors by code, even your roof shingles had to be a certain color. Any shed had to match the house colors so you are talking a custom shed. You could only use the shitty plank fencing. Your address number needed to displayed 5 feet from the ground on each front side of the house, and both sides of the drive way so 4.. times.. I got fined once for taking a two week vacation and it was during May's raining season so the grass grew super fast. (so yard Maintenace was enforced.) Your house could not have any signs of moss or dirt on it(Ours was white) so we had to clean it with this soap spray every few months..>.> Talk about not feeling like you own your own home, you can't even customize the out side of it.. I know I'm in a different part of the country but some permeants I strongly agree with like electrical it's for a greater good of the community for safety. Others like decking and shed's (Granted Sheds with no concrete foundations have no required permeants.) This confuse me a lot because if I build the deck with out attaching it to the house or a shed with no concrete foundation the city doesn't give a heck. Once you connect it to the house or use concrete boom city is all over it. I have nothing in my area about trees I just cut down 5 trees in my back yard over winter as they were causing major allergies for the wife. Though we are going to replant fruit trees native to this area next year. So yeah in a modern world we don't truly own anything as everything is so connected and impacts others which I'm okay with when things are reasonable. I think this video was very cool it's nice to see people keeping old trees alive but not nice if it's damaging or a danger, thus you have to fight or spend a lot of money fighting the city on fixing a hazardous issue.

I live in west seattle and have a small backyard, maybe 20×15. In the back yard there is a large sycamore tree that basically makes the backyard not enjoyable because of the irritant it let's off when the leaves fall. Is this something the city would allow to be cut down?
