Thank you for the honourable mention VRFSG, much appreciated and nice to see you still enjoying the DOF H2! Today we finished our 'Designed for DOF Reality' range of QR Base Mounts and released them on our website and facebook and the instructional videos are on youtube.... all 'Designed for DOF Reality' Base mounts require zero drilling and you can even QR the Honeycomb table itself. Sorry, shameless plug, but it's a massive coincidence that you released this video on the same day... the planets are aligned I guess.

I started using motion in simulation over 10 years ago with small DC motors similar to what DOF reality now use when DIY was really the only solution available. Balance/minimizing weight is the key for these small powered rigs, also fitting Gas springs/dampeners can help take the load off the motors and smooth things out. I now use big AC servo motors with encoders and 16bit controllers and the difference is chalk and cheese in speed/smoothness, but you will pay. Still remember though having great fun on my old DC rigs.

I've Had my DOF 3H now for about a month, There is no getting around that even with the upgraded motors (that I have) there is some juddering that's most noticeable in slow turns. But having said that I'm not noticing it as much as I used to -perhaps there is break in period at play or my brain is just tuning it out. When I first used VR in a flightsim I knew I couldn't go back to using a flat screen monitor, it was just so much more immersive. I can now honestly say the same for using a motion platform. I can't fly without it anymore.

Great video mate....I have the H3 and what you say re feeling stuff that only a 6dof rig should deliver is true. In my H3, where I have pitch, roll AND yaw, the rig, in combination with vr, tricks my brain into also feeling acceleration, de-acceleration, surge and heave......absolutely amazing piece of technology. The one point I would make that stood out in your video was that you either forgot to activate motion compensation or you have not installed mc correctly as your view in rolls should not be wandering in the horizontal plane like yours is.

I have modded my NLR v3 into a full-motion rig ( the pedals move as well ), and I could not be happier. Movement is still swift and aggresive, and it does not have a noticeable digitization of steps due a gear-box. Small and large movements are both equally convincing.

i have my H2 since your first Video. Im still in love with it. Upgraded at least some nice Fanatec Stuff and the very pricey Belt Tensioner and i dont regret all of it. All in all ive spend now 6,5K€ with all my Top Notch Peripherals Stuff i allready had.And a Seat Pad like the Jetseat helps in covering the jittery Movements sometime. But thats not a deal Breaker at all. Most of the time the experience is butter smooth. And what a blast this thing still is. Now im into Sim Racing and it feels awesome. Considering that 2,5k€ for the motion Rig it was the best purchase for my Hobby. Im now able to drive and fly EVERYTHING i can imagine in such a fidelity im blown away every time still. On the other side it´s so freaky for others when they see my Rig. And after the Belt Tensioner Upgrade it doesnt get easier to get in that Rig and get ready to fly or drive. But hey how lame it was sitting on my Desk and only grab the stick. Now i have to prepare for simming the right way🤣 Put Gloves on, strap in the Belts, VR Googles On, Headset on and up it goes. Absolutly awesome 🤘

Your videos are always awesome, I enjoy every single one of them, thanks for all of them. I do wish on this particular video though, that you would’ve given us a tour of your rig by grabbing your camera and showing us around it, and how you get in and out of it, and all the peripherals you have mounted on it. I was gonna pull the trigger on one of them but it seems to me a bit crowded. I have a Next Level Racing Pro cockpit and getting this would mean ditching my current set up, which I would if I could convince myself of the ergonomics. Perhaps you could, at some point, make a video about this set up as a walk around type thing. Anyway, thanks for all your insights.

So here's a question --- you mentioned that you can feel the stepping on light movements. In a heli for the most part you have fairly subtle motion as one is not doing heavy banks and barrel rolls in a heli. Have you tried flying a heli and is the rig appropriate for that without excessive stepping/rough movement?

Thanks for the video, Steve. Do you ever plan on trying fans on your rig to help simulate speed/movement? Of course people always argue that there is no wind in a cockpit, but then again there is usually G forces in a cockpit, so we can only do the best we can to try to create more immersion. Does your rig "jitter" noticeably when you change the angles? As in like every degree in the +/- 20 degree turn is felt as a small pump, and not just smoothly going turning around? Edit: You talk about this in the 04:35 part, not being completely smooth. And cause for that is, that the motors DOF Reality uses, are High RPM motors with low torque (torque was around 25 NM or something), and not meant for precise axle rotations. You can feel this by turning the motor axle by hand, and it is feels like it is about 6-8 steps per rotation, like the magnets inside motor will step such way (stepper motors). This could be fixed with a good gearbox, where motor is made to need to use more high RPM, than try to make small 1/4-1/6 rotation movements. The gearbox was problematic with the previous ones, as there was too much sloppiness between gears. So they adapted the wormscrew gear, but IMHO that has way too high thread pitch, so you can move the platform quickly (85 degrees per second). IMHO they could have very well used twice smaller pitch and get it twice more precise in motion, utilizing high RPM capability, but this way limit the angle of rate to just about 43 degrees per second. Now the platform is +/- 20/25 degrees tilting, so in total 40/50 degrees. With 43 deg/s speed the platform would take a second to go from one extreme position to other. And that is the thing that might then be unacceptably too slow. That is just for driving games that want that high shakiness as IRL, but for pilots the smoother would be better choice, as all effects are more for the angles/attitudes and smooth movements. So if they would offer different gearbox for flight sims and driving games, it could make big difference.

I have an H3 with SFU gearboxes since a couple of days now but the experience is VERY disappointing. When doing slow turns (or auto pilot) the motion is very very jerky. It will only bank like 2 or 3 times a second which completely ruins the immersion. Feels more like driving a bumby road. It does not relate to what you see in the headset in any way. This is very noticable in airliners. It's less in GA because movements are faster but you can still feel the "steppy" motion which becomes very annoying to a point I'd rather turn the whole rig off. I went through all the settings and manuals I could find online, but I think it's a refresh rate limitation either in the software or gearboxes. If some one has a software set up that feels smooth, please post. I think I'm gonna sell mine again. Return and refund is not possible so make sure to try it first somewhere before you buy. It's a lot of money.🙁

This is also my only main gripe with mine too.. However, you can increase the surge effect when doing small movements, this tends to help, but it's by no means perfect. I don't know about the DOF but I recently got the Yaw2 and I hate it. The movement in many ways feels like it REDUCES the enjoyment of flight, it also makes it hard to fly (the bouncing around makes controlling difficult), and limits the peripherals I can use. It also makes using a mouse and keyboard impossible or very difficult. In hindsight I would have been much happier spending the same money on a solid fixed rig that can handle tons of peripherals like the MonsterTech MTS

@JohnVanderbeck
@JohnVanderbeck 11 ай бұрын
@@jingle1161 Same problem, it tends to be jerky sometimes (though SRS seems better than the Yaw's software) and the pitch axis is "ratchety". It isn't horrendous, just not what I was expecting I guess out of a $5,000 chair. The non-smooth motion though I could maybe learn to accept but not being to adequetly use my favorite peripherals is the deal break for me. I haven't touched it now in 3 weeks mainly for that reason. You can somewhat smooth the movements in SRS and you can certainly limit them as well. I had turned it down to like 25% of max movement so I was banking at maybe 5-7 degrees max and it weas better, but the full tilt like 30+ degrees was way to much. It sounds counter intuitive to me even but that was just how I felt.

Steve, I appreciate all your VR videos. They've helped me in setting up my Reverb G2, 10900K, and 3080ti with MSFS 2020. I'm considering buying an H3 - a friend has the H3 and I've done some flying in it. But the way it moves during aircraft turns seems incorrect and I hesitate to spend nearly $4K on it unless this can be corrected. When I perform a coordinated turn his H3 banks (rolls) in the direction of the turn and stays there, at which point I am sliding a bit sideways out of the seat. I am a full scale pilot and I know that in a coordinated turn there is no side force on the pilot, so the H3 is not moving correctly in turns. Is there a way to correct/adjust this in the SRS software? Or is that a problem with how MSFS 2020 is sending data to the H3? I should note that I have also used the H3 with race car sims and I feel it is quite realistic in that application.
@julpeuzin
@julpeuzin 7 ай бұрын
Hey dude, I'm a real pilot too and I've been wondering that exact same stuff over and over. I read the SRS manual, and it seems to be taking the aircraft attitude as the input, not the actual g force in the aircraft coordinate system. In fact there is an option in SRS called Enhanced G Forces or something, only available for H6/P6, that basically convert the translations of the rig into rotation for sustained acceleration. But apparently that's not available for H2/3. But I couldn't find a proper, definitive answer. Did you find out ?
@hotdogx2
@hotdogx2 7 ай бұрын
I went ahead and got the H3 with SFU upgrades and the Hurricane Fans. It also came with the motor brakes which I wasn't expecting. Got it all up and running a few days ago. I've already sorted the banking/rolling issue. The SRS software that reads the telelmetry from the games and then provides inputs to the H3 has fairly extensive tuning adjustments. Turns out you can use angles or rates for the pitch, roll, and yaw axes. I set the roll axis to rates and it is now working pretty close to what I'm used to in a full scale aircraft. The roll effect values have to be backed off as well, but once you understand how the tuning works (SRS has a decent tuning guide online and Jeff Weaver has a couple videos with Get Your Game On explaining tuning) you can get it set up pretty well. I have to say when I first used the H3 on MSFS2020 I thought it was very rough and jerky and wasn't even close to reality, but once I got it tuned, and set the roll to rate, I'm pleased with it. I don't understand why most folks seem to be using angle instead of rates for the roll axis in aircraft; to me rates is the way to go.
@julpeuzin
@julpeuzin 7 ай бұрын
Ok thanks for the answer, very much appreciated. One last question if I may, what do you think of the yaw axis ? Is it relevant to you ? I was thinking to start with an H2, the yaw seems a bit of an overkill to me as it can only simulate brief rotational acceleration and not sustained acceleration like pitch and roll, but maybe I'm wrong. Also I'd like to keep the footprint of the rig as low as possible. Thanks in advance !
@hotdogx2
@hotdogx2 7 ай бұрын
I suppose getting the yaw axis depends upon your budget. If your budget is tight go with the H2 and it will be a lot of fun. If your budget allows I think having yaw is worthwhile. It's makes a big difference on some of the race cars. Also in planes, I now get to experience the sensation of the fuselage yawing when I use the rudder pedals, and I was missing that when I first tried my friend's H2 before he upgraded it to an H3. It just further adds to the realism and immersion in my opinion. I should note that yaw can be set up using either rates or angles, and we use angles. To summarize, for aircraft pitch and yaw use angles and roll uses rates. For cars, pitch, roll, and yaw all use angles. As for the footprint, adding yaw increases the total width required by 8" and the total length by 2".

i don't agree with the "smoothness" aspect. you have the newer one with ballscrew and it can be tuned in a way it will be butter smooth.it's just a matter of controlling the motors in a proper way. i say that as a person that did his own 6DOF platform with 500mm stroke actuators and they are butter smooth with servo drives. so it's either bad controller or the motors... this updated actuator with SFU ballscrew is actually the only good thing on that platform. then, when it comes to number of DOF it will be subjective but in my opinion the most immersive one is HEAVE. if i have to give up 5 and stay with only one then heave is the way to go - especially for flying. that's why if someone is considering DOF reality then 6 is the way to go - those 2 or 3 dof are better than nothing but since this is the cheapest solution on the market if one can afford it then it's better to go with 6dof. as for DIY - when done properly it can go 1000h without the issues as in my case ;) but it is something that you need to be able to do and like doing it. it's not that easy to make proper platform even though there's plenty of info on the internet. just my $0.02 👊🫡

I'd love something like that, but... How the heck do I put my whole simpit on it? There just isn't enough space. ;)

Even with the pro version? It can support so much weight.

@@cyrilgpilot there are multiple considerations. My simpit is built from scratch when it comes to construction, incorporating some devices and panels that I bought and some that I made. Custom seat I built has TPR pedals as well as FFB Rhino and a Virpil collective fixed to it. Built on top of it is the Hornet cockpit based construction that holds the UFC, 3 MFDs and other stuff, also has a monitor on top of it (though I play in VR). Then there are two side consoles, each custom built, incorporating the throttle panel and a bunch of custom switches, knobs, etc, on the left one and some of my custom panels, a half keyboard, a Virpil panel, a mouse, on the right one. They're not that small, and considering the whole setup, it's not small either and most definitely not built with a thought of putting it all on a moving rig. First, it would be a lot of work to modify it to even put on the rig in the first place. Second, I'm not sure if the bought components of it were built to last in a vibrating or even moving environment, but the parts I did myself sure as heck were not. ; ) I don't know how much of a kick you get on a cat launch with this, but if it's of any significance - I'd start worrying about it. Third, spatial dimensions would make me weary of clearances. I mean, it looks cool, I'm sure it feels cool, but damn it, it seems like just too much trouble! :D

@@tomaszwota1465 wow, nice rig!! Yes, a lot of things to think about and the answer may be something very expensive and 🤞 that vibrations will not dommage your stuff...

I’ve watch lots of your videos and responded to a few of your reviews on your channel starting to see now is that you’ve have start to be paid to review products as I’ve purchased many I’ve the items you have reviewed a sadly I find them lacking. Dof reality h2 is not great it’s stutters it’s really bad £1.500 wasted. Pimax crystal this has the most problematic headset I’ve every purchase again £1.500 wasted. I’ve noticed that you never say how difficult it can be to set up any of your reviewed products maybe a bit of honesty rather than profit. 😢

@@VRFlightSimGuy so the motion compensation needs the version that has yearly fee payment? that alone should stop me from getting a motion sim

Morning... you are my Varjo guy.. I've been using G2 and see Varjo have a 25% sale for a few days... in your opinion should we take this as a precursor to an announcement re: the next version. If so, man I'd sure like to know what will be in the new one (and price) before buying the discounted current version.. your thoughts??
