We had a dog who recovered from a double ACL injury. She couldn't use her back legs at all. The Veterinarian wanted us to do one of two surgeries - 'fishline' surgery for $3500 or all out surgery for $7k. We said no - we can't do that. So she suggested Omega 3 high dose and Glucosamine along with acetaminophen I believe (I could be wrong on that). We also switched her food up to more natural salmon based without fillers. Anyway - she healed! 75 pound dog. Ran and walked again! We used a large cut out Ikea bag to help her go in and out for the bathroom 🙂

@@Sharone123 reassuring reading this, my dog went paralysed from the rear at one point she couldn't even wag her tail, the vet hardly gave any information apart from the price of a scan & surgery..I've basically been doing what I can by reading & watching videos online. About 2 months on nearly she's able to walk, wag her tail etc..but muscles are weak at her rear, she can't get up the stairs yet..I'm going to another vet outside of town to see if I can get better help later this week for her..I'm having to express her bladder but she has got feeling back as she let's me know she needs to go...its been tough as you well know but reading your comment has made me feel more positive! At the start of the month my dog tore 1 ACL and we began this regime sadly 2.5 weeks later she tore the other so now we're trying to rehab bilaterally. Discussed our plan with our Vet yesterday. He's never seen anyone rehab a dog with bilateral tears but he believes in my plan. Our addition to this is a wheelchair she can slowly start reusing her legs. Wish us luck!

I believe the braces work better for small dogs. The brace didn’t work for our 90 lbs dog and this leg has significantly more arthritis now because we waited to get tplo. His other leg we decided on tplo at the first sign of cruciate injury and that leg is much more stable. Sometimes the best thing you can do is get it repaired immediately.
@lonewolfsurvival3453

The cruel trick is when they tear BOTH of their ACL/CCLs, as mine did a couple years ago just jumping up too high for a ball and landing awkwardly. It really helps to have at least one good leg to stand on back there, just for them to get around and to prevent total muscle atrophy in the back end, resulting in paralysis. Let's just say that 2022 was a very tough year for my dog, Abby, and I. Couldn't afford the TPLO surgeries and opted for the natural/holistic route. It was a very grueling year of carrying that 80-lb pitbull in and out, up and down steps several times a day to go potty and get fresh air, having to get diapers for her (total incontinence). Having to express her bladder each time out, as well as her bowels on many occasions. I did accupressure therapy, red light therapy, physical therapy, I built her a doggy wheelchair that she was never able to use, I altered her diet to a mostly raw/home-cooked diet containing zero carbs.....just muscle meat, organ meat, bone, SOME fruits/veggies, as well as fish oil, curcumin, boswelia, etc. I tried everything that I could find on the internet to help her. I think I may have had more success had she not injured her shoulders trying to slide off my bed to come after me when I stepped outside. All I heard was her slam onto the hard floor and her shoulders were never the same. Ever since she did that, her shoulder muscles were constantly tight and seized up and she had painful spasms that made laying down comfortably next to impossible. Her vet prescribed me Carprofin (NSAID) and Gabapentin. Since she was having to use her front legs to drag herself around, her shoulders really never got a chance to heal and I was never able to get her off of her NSAID meds, that was about the only thing keeping her pain level down. As a result of being on her NSAID pain relievers for so long (6-months), her kidneys began to suffer. She drank a lot of water, as well as me adding extra fluid to her meals, but she was still extremely, chronically dehydrated. She urinated way more than normal, her urine was dark yellow (despite all the fluids she was taking in) and EXTREMELY foul smelling. I learned how to make my own sub-q fluids at home, bought large syringes and needles from Tractor Supply and was giving her sub-q fluid injections 3-4 times a day to help with her chronic dehydration. One early morning, I took her out to go potty, still dark out, and shined my light on her to see that her right eye was not illuminated in the light, although they were both illuminated the previous evening. I did some tests and sure enough, she went blind in that eye, just overnight! So, that was the next stage of her kidney failure. From that point on, she had an even tougher time getting around and wound up falling off my bed a couple times, which scared the living CRAP out of me. I built a railing system around my bed and piled all the pillows, couch cushions and clothing that I could find around the bed, just in case she fell off again. Since I was cleaning her after every potty and bathing her every night, as well as her having at least 1-2 accidents in her diaper every day, I was having to wash diapers, towels and bedding every single day. I was not able to work very much, because I had to stay home to take care of her, THAT was my sole priority in 2022, so my financials definitely suffered. Once she went blind, I noticed her well-being rapidly deteriorate, she became pretty depressed and any optimism I had for her recovery went out the window, so I had to make that excruciating decision at that time to take her in for that last visit on 10/19/2022. By far, the hardest year of my life and having her euthanized was the single hardest thing I've ever had to do. I've had lots of other dogs, but she was the one that I've bonded with the most, she held me up through some of the darkest periods of my life and I'm eternally grateful to her and to God for allowing me the 8 years that I had with her. She taught me so much about giving/receiving absolute unconditional love and she taught me a lot about myself as well, just how much I'm willing to do for someone I really love and care about. Anyway, that was my experience with dual-torn CCLs. If I can offer any tips to anyone else going through that, it would be this. Do not let them just lay around too long early on, you have to not only do range of motion exercises, but you have to find a way to work their muscles (without complicating the healing process), so that their muscles back there don't atrophy to the point that the damage becomes irreversible. Also, make sure that their environment is secure so that they can't hurt themselves even further, because the goal is to get them OFF of those NSAID pain meds as soon as possible, before they begin to effect their liver and kidneys, because that's just a different can of worms that you really don't want any part of, trust me.

@@artest7, I completely agree with your entire 2nd paragraph. I too, tend to relate better with dogs than most other people and would go to the ends of the earth to help them any way I can. Abby's passing was the most devastating thing that I've ever had to go through, it took me a long time to cope with that loss. I was much closer to her than I think I've ever been to any human. She was surely the best friend I've ever had. It's been a year and a half now and I am so much better now. I still talk to her at least once a day, but I am perfectly fine now. Time definitely does heal the pain, although we never forget and I do still shed a tear for her every now and then, but I'm so much better now at this point.

This happened to my dog approximately one year ago. I’m happy to say she is looking great now. She still has some days where she over does it and limps a little bit later on that day. She is a 35 pound dog. If this happens to your dog I recommend going to the vet a soon as possible to get the drawer test done and make sure it’s not a break. Then follow the steps provided in this video. I did not get my dog a brace. My vet told me that there was no way she would recover without surgery. She is definitely on the road to success now. So don’t just run out and spend the 5-7k on a surgery. My dog was 9 years old when this happened. Just know that it will take a lot of time and dedication from you to get your dog on the road to success.

@@howdoesitgetbetter your best chance is to keep your dog on a leash when going outside. Keep your dog in a crate when your not home. Put a do not knock sign on your front door. Try to keep your dog from trying to run around. Do not let your dog jump around. At the beginning when it first happens and the knee is swollen put ice on it often. After the swelling goes away I would use heat on the knee. Go on short walks for awhile. I slowly started to increase the walks. If my dog limped after the walk I would know I over did the walk. Feed a lot of salmon oil and turmeric. Also get your dog on supplements. Glucosamine is really good. Do the stretches in the video with your dog. When you start to see improvement with the dogs movement I slowly started to walk her up and down hills. If you are home with your dog just try to keep them resting. Try to do a lot of short walks throughout the day. Like 4, five or 10 minute walks. It’s been about a year and a half since my dog had a full tear. I now run with he on her walks. She isn’t perfect but I would say she is about 90% better. I’m still walks up hills which really helps. Just take it slow. I hope I helped and best of luck to your dog. Oh one last thing is try to keep your dog thin. The less weight on your dog the better. Cut the food back a bit.

I also iced the knee, with frozen corn, twice a day for 5-10 minutes. I did the ice for about 3 weeks. Now, it's just maintenance. He’s doing amazing for 13 or 14 years old (not sure of his age, he’s a rescue but is 13 at the youngest.) my biggest advice to anyone not willing to consider surgery because of age cost etc is to be very patient and have faith. ❤️

Give your pups room to think on their own. Dogs are BRILLIANT! They are smart, they have common sense, they know WAY more than we do. I see people who treat their dogs as if they are stupid. It's NOT the dogs with the problem, it's the owners who don't trust their dog's to do what's right. Praise. Positivity. Persistence.

it's so nice to see a vet that actually knows what they're talking about. I feel everytime I see a vet in my town, no matter who, I'm always given incorrect advice or something huge is missed that I had already diagnosed at home and they say something like "we checked the mouth and it looked fine, there must be another reason for the excessive drooling, inability to chew hard food, 2 weeks later led to a cheek abscess because of abscessed teeth. or the most recent, being told to funnel white sugar into the back of a rescue cat armpit abscess instead of just using honey in a syringe. I was giving my 21yr old female daschund an exam and I noticed she has a hard lump between her butt and vagina. Is this normal or a sign of something else like a bladder stone?

My dog ruptured both CCL’ during a hard game of fetch the beginning of April. He was limping on his right hind leg and appeared to be in pain. After a day or two I called the vet and brought him in for an exam. The vet sent us home with Carprofin and strict leash only instructions. After about four days is right leg seemed to be much better but was now not putting any pressure on his left rear paw. We assumed since this leg was compensating for the right he probably injured this one too. We kept him on leash potty only activity and Carprofen for another week. I called the vet and scheduled him for xrays. Hips and back looked good but further manipulation tests showed CCL tears in both knees. The vet suggested we see an ortho specialist. So I scheduled an appointment asap (2 weeks out) In that time we noticed a vast improvement. He was no longer limping except after getting up and taking a few steps. After a few steps he seemed to be walking normally. At this point he was no longer in any pain. So the Ortho examined him and immediately recommended TPLO surgery. I should mention that Lance is a 3.5yo male GSD weighing 77lbs. I asked about the cost and was quoted $6.8- $7 k per knee. We we also told that they did not recommend doing both at the same time. Even with pet insurance this was going to cost us much more than we could afford. So I started looking into alternatives. One method was using a newer heavy duty filament but this was not recommended for large dogs. The other was braces and nutritional supplements in order to accelerate scar tissue formation whic can take several months. We would have to do two braces at the same time which are sold by Ortho Dog. So here we are 2.5 months later…. Lance hasnt limped in weeks but is still slow to get up from sitting or laying. He is still on restricted movement. Walking only no running or jumping. He is able to get up on the sofa and bed on his own but I lift him into my truck when we take him to his classes. I have not bought him braces. I know its almost impossible to make any judgement on his care without seeing him but… Would you still recommend braces at this stage or should we continue his low impact exercising and Carprofin? I dont want to get braces only to find out that at this point that would do more harm than good. Thanks

This is a very good video. My old dog tore his ACL and went through the suture surgery and it didn't work. He had to have a second surgery to remove the sutures. I ordered the same brace you showed (Ortho Dog) and that saved his leg. A few weeks later, he tore the other ACL and we used Orthodog knee brace again. Now I have a Chihuahua and Ortho Dog does not make braces that small. I've tried others but had to return them. Could you recommend a good knee brace for a Chihuahua? She ran & played A LOT yesterday, & showed stiffness last night, limping this mornings & by late morning she's keeping her right back leg in the air. BUT NO ACUTE INJURY symptoms. I have no idea when she injured it. Previous foster says no limping. When I saw the leg in air, I immediately brought her in & put her in the crate & gave her leftover Carprofen from her spay surgery. I have enough for 7 days.

Really important to actually make people aware of the downsides to conservative management too, avoiding these is often why surgery is recommended in the first place. “Heal” is a bit of a misleading word here, as while the joint will stabilise enough with scar tissue that they’ll be able to walk fine on it after a few months, it will still retain an extent of instability which will cause a huge progression of arthritis. A young dog with no arthritis on x ray at diagnosis can have a knee that looks worse than a 12+ year old within 2-3 years. Not uncommon to see dogs that’ve done this at 2-3 years old and are cripples at 7-8 from all the arthritis - and then the drugs they need to be on to make them comfortable can put them into organ failure in the long term. IMO this is arguably the most essential thing owners need to know when deciding whether to go to surgery or not. Its not just the short term recovery that’s important, a ruptured ACL literally has the possibility to shorten your pet’s lifespan in some cases.

Would you do similar exercises for a cat? 3 weeks ago my cat injured his leg and my vet suspects it’s the ACL, but she was not able to do the drawer test because he wouldn’t let her. The injured leg (right) also has grade 1 or 2 patellar luxation. He has hip dysplasia, arthritis in his elbows, and arthritis in his left leg. I can’t imagine him going through surgery with all those problems. I don’t know if his left and front legs could support the right if he was recovering from surgery. He’s walking on the injured leg now, but still slightly limping. My vet said I could watch it for a couple of weeks after the follow up, but she said if I want to pursue anything else, I will need to take him to a specialist. She didn’t do much for him besides 3 days of onsior and he’s on gabapentin. He also had early kidney disease, so it really limits his ability to have pain meds. I’ve been trying to restrict his jumping and make him use cat stairs to get onto furniture, but he snuck up the stairs 4 times in 2.5 weeks. When I tried to gate him off in a room, he pushed the gate open from the bottom and snuck up the stairs. When I closed him in the bedroom with the door, he scratched a piece of wood off the bottom of the door. He’s a very determined cat! Part of why I think he would not be okay with cage rest.

@@RexRaven22 yes, I purchased the Domer Laser 660 mW . Excellent results. We avoided surgery completely. They now have a stronger model 1300 mw. I also took the online certification course with Dr Angelique Barbara a vet from the US. She suggested this brand. The course is needed to understand what you’re doing and ensure best results.

Do you have any experience with other braces? We are looking for a lower cost alternative.

@@RexRaven22 We went with the Ortho Dog braces. Tried like 3 others that just did not work. I emailed the ortho dog company and explained my situation they wanted to help my dog so gave me a huge discount. It has changed his life he had torn both ccl's ,his left has totally healed his right he still has issues with. With the brace he can run and play though and it doesn't bother him at all. He actually will go to his brace in the morning asking to have it on!
