I learned everything in this video the hard way. I had A-1 obedient dog, who did competition heel, sits and downs so fast and hard I’m surprised he didn’t hurt himself, however I couldn’t 100% trust him in public. Why? Because I let him run my house. I was over affectionate allowed him to be pushy and control my space. I ended up with an obedient, but entitled, arrogant, jerk of a dog. I stopped all the affection, chit chat, being on my bed, standing on the console in my truck etc; took charge of the inside of the house and everything changed. It was very hard to do because I wanted to love on him etc. If your having these issues I encourage you to hear the message Larry is laying out in this video. He is right on.

I'm going to need you to write a book on all this knowledge Mr. Krohn. The world needs it.

For you it might feel like you keep repeating yourself and sometimes indeed there is a story where we go "oh yeah, he mentioned that before". But don't be mistaken: your videos help out a lot. Ignore people talking trash.. Know there are people out there who appreciate the time and effort you put in sharing your experiences through this channel. We will go pick up our German Shepherd puppy in a few hours! We will take your advice to heart!

I´m living with "2nd hand" dogs for about 27 yrs now ( most of them had severe behavioral issues when I took them in) & your video is a great reminder, that we all should go back to the basics instead of listening to all those so called Experts & their scientific bs. Great messages in this video Mr Krohn. I teach my children that a dog is a true mirror for us. Not just over all behaviour but minute by minute. Your dog will respond to every emotion that you are feeling. No matter what. Not just sponges but tired mirrors. Thanks to my dog my children are now learning to control their emotions in a next level way. Bare in mind my kids have been through a lot of trauma in their short lives so it has been hard for me to teach them how to control their emotions. Everytime I show them how our puppy changes when their emotions spike, they then work harder to control themselves and they are doing so well. My dog "Blue" is so well behaved for an 8 month old puppy, I believe it's because we have all worked really hard to teach her to be calm in the house and behave in a really cool manner. She still plays and is allowed to be silly but it stops when we say stop. Thank you so much for your words of reality. B

I have no idea who you are but this is amazing. I believe and completely agree with everything you said. I have a pack of dogs and I control them with all behavior based training. I never realized I was so on track with another person. I have always wanted to do behavior training for people and their dogs.

Everything you say resonates so deep with me! I am a long time horse trainer and have worked with dogs on and off and had to stop offering my assistance to dog owners for this exact reason. With horses spacial pressure and truly respecting the handlers space is so profound, it is with dogs too but many people neglect to see that. I worked with two beautiful Rottweilers once, both females. The one female was very dominant and ran the house and started attacking the other female. I worked with this family for a month and had some great success with the dogs, but the wife was impossible. She thought the dog laying with her on her bed growling at her husband when he approached or tickled her was cute, this dog would growl at the cat if it jumped up on the bed, she never seemed to grasp that the dog wasn't "protecting" her but was in fact claiming territory and being dominant, long story short 2 months after I left the dogs got into a huge fight outside at the fenceline, the dominant girl absolutely maimed the other dog and was subsequently euthanized. This was the last family I ever worked with. The lady acted like everything was a joke during our sessions and the outcome was so horrific.

I agree ! Our last dog, Tosca ,age 16 had to be put down two years ago. Blind, deaf and couldn’t get up the stairs besides incontinence.Poor thing. She was miserable but brave. She was about 4 or 5 months old 3 rd rescued dog. After 2 years we really missed having a dog and decided to look for a breeder of Australian labradoodles. Tristan joined us last June 2019. He is adorable but fussy eater and starved himself for the first week. Our neighbour of 16 years next door also has a doodle dog so we exchanged dog food for testing until one worked for the both of us. We usually just greeted our neighbours but our relationship changed because of the dogs. Their 2 teenage boys go to school and both parents work and when I heard that their dog was shut up in the house I proposed To bring their dog over to play with Tristan for an hour and then return Beni. They love each other and cry at the same time of day wanting their play time. After 18 years the dog food , pet stores , and training had exploded. Can ‘t say I liked the new form of training although Tristan was the star. Picture perfect. But at 4 months he changed and became agressive attacking us from behind tearing our clothing. Didn’t bite us, but was violent when we took him outside ( he had an Half acre to run around in.( teething?) . We live in a rural area. Eventuality, I managed to calm him down although he kept the same behavior with my husband and I had to step in. He always came when called, up to 2 months ago. Mr.Independent! I stopped letting him free in the back yard and now he goes out on a leash. He also discovered it was fun to sneak past me at the door and laugh at me. A new game for him and wouldn’t come. All privileges are revoked. For the first 4 month he was afraid of everything. We took him into town and he shook like a leaf because of the noise of traffic . I did a fair amount of training with him besides the classes of which I am Not impressed. Tristan is our 4 th .dog. Just found your videos which has the best teaching on line and the make the most sense. It takes 2 years of constant training to teach good manners and I have made a lot of mistakes. Each dog has their own personality and quirks and one has to keep adjusting and problem solving.Larry you are so right about what goes on in the home does matter. After Tristan pulled me off my feet twice ( weight about 40 + lbs.) I had to take out on old prong collar. I don’t like them but it is the dog or me. I Do not need a broken arm at this stage in life. Oh yes, He counter surfs and stole a piece of steak which I grabbed out of his mouth. He use to sleep with his stuffed toys, now tears them apart. Packed them up and removed all except one. He also is given a fresh bone every day to satisfy the urge to chew. It also cleans his teeth. As for calling the dog, he is usually compliant but not consistent as before. It’s like a wolf pack where a lower status wolf keep challenging the leader.We are still in lockdown so I take the dog for a walk late at night when no one is on the street. Labradoodle are high energy dogs and need to run off excess energy . He always sniffs the food first before eating and waits for permission to eat. He is eating mostly raw food.Most of this training was done in the first 4 months. Now I wished I had expanded to a greater or wider degree at that time. I am thinking about an e collar for Tristan as we would like to take him to a wild area , leash free but still have control as there are other dogs. We trained Tosca to perform a down stay whenever another dog approached . Tristan is more social and would want to play with another dog. He also has a higher sense of play and teasing and tormenting .Beni just ignores him even when he body slams him for attention. Lastly, he adores our granddaughters and likes to cuddle. I play with the girls. They love pillow fights and Tristan joins in trying to catch the pillows. Very affectionate and follows me everywhere in the house. Think it’s called Velcro dogs. Larry you are correct regarding tools. A tool is just a tool. It just saves time. Thank you so much for all your videos. The best info online. The most sensible and honest info as well as practical .

It was no coincidence that I came across this video tonight. My 11 month old Malinois/mastiff is out of control in our home. We hired a trainer that IMMEDIATELY told us to get her on a prong collar without even analyzing her. In my belief, it made her worse than she probably would’ve ever been. She’s only mellow in our home with it on now. It’s useless. I want her to be relaxed and neutral without it. I was balling in tears tonight because she last her marbles. She got really rough with me, and when I went to correct her, she snapped at me and broke some skin. If my husband and I are sitting on the couch, she barks and barks. In our backyard she’s perfect. I just want to thank you for this video. It really gave me inside on what I have to do to help us live a better life together. 💪🏻 🐶

Just watched this for the second time first time my GSD was 1yr old I listened to you then my girl is lovely in the house she is now 2yrs old have sat outside with her for 1 month teaching her not to bark at people and it works she is so relaxed no more guarding her obedience is a bit slow but after listening to you I am not going to beat myself up thanks for all your help just sent for your book and a ecollar just for her safety as we have a lot of cats in Cyprus and I want her off lead as much as possible to have the best life

A new subscriber here and very grateful to have found your channel. I have a 4 month old poodle/retriever mix that I’m training. She’s coming along nicely, as you say it’s about behavior in the home first and then the obedience will build on that. I’m fortunate in that I retired in August and got the pup at the end of September. I’ve made her training my full time job. I’m finding a flat collar, a martingale to be the foundation tools. The e-collar is helpful on occasion to reinforce the other work. Thank you for this video and all that you share with us. Bravo!

Thanks so much Larry for the clarity with no BS. Thank god i found your channel before i got my rescue dog Staffie X! His behaviour in the home and my understanding of how what i was doing and behaving affected him, made the adjustment so easy for him as i could be very clear about what was desirable and made me more confident with a human-affectionate but dog under-socialised dog who is quite big and strong but who can listen to me as i can catch his attention and he wants do the right thing with his human. Very well put and totally agree. With every dog I learn more, just hope I don't run out of time before I get it completely right! My WG WL GSD has been a real eye opener the last 2 years. I never dreamed I'd ever have a bond with a dog like we do, but it wasn't easy. I allowed her too much freedom at the beginning, thank God she has an excellent temperament and I was able to go back and fix some things. Next puppy will be all about structure structure structure first and foremost. Thanks Larry and love your videos. If you ever give a seminar in FL I'll be front and center!

Love this message! In an age where everyone is looking for quick fixes and hacks, this is so refreshing. We need more of this transparent, truthful and direct help in the industry. People do need to understand how to live with their dogs in a way that sets them up for success. They to put the time in Not ship them off the training and /or slap tools on dog and then bring them back to the same environment with no rules so absolutely nothing changes. With so much ego and marketing gimmicks in the training arena, it is nice to see a compassionate person/trainer who cares about both the dog and the owner, but is honest and pulls no punches about what needs to happen.

Your story has touched me. As i understand what she went through and different senario. Itmade me so nervous withmy grandson around. He’s just 3 years and i thought every dog we met were going to go for him. It consumed me and puppy classes went to were nightmare. I know i have a ways to go yet. Great video. Some people think that dog training about teaching your dog to do tricks and cool stuff. In reality, dog training ( and behavior) is about creating a relationship with you and your dog that enables you both to live a stress free and practical life together.

I have just had a great boost from listening to you my GSD girl is a bit nervy outside but I use obedience but in the house she uses place sleeps in her own bed never gets pushy with me but what I will stop allowing her to come over and take a free cuddle great free advise

New to the channel but loving your videos. I've got an 11 month old American Bulldog. He's an amazing dog and partner but reactive and I realize it's because of me but still struggling to make that right. I do most of the things you seem to recommend but I do love on him any time he comes and puts his head on my leg and usually will play with him when he drops into a play bow and dances around to indicate he wants to play. I like how you describe the way the dog is thinking about that and the way to respond is maintain control but in a way that the dog still gets what he wants while also knowing whos in charge. I feel like I haven't properly shown my dog that he can trust me and that I'll take care of whatever comes our way but I'm trying and logically I feel like I'm doing the right things. He does seem to be getting better so maybe it was mostly a growth period. He's the worst in the truck and looking out the windows in the house but clearly knows I don't want him barking. What do you mean by focus on the behavior? How do we correct the bad behaviors? What are the things that you tell people to do during the first months then? I still can rarely walk by someone or a dog without some pulling and barking. It used to be insane uncontrollable but it's gotten better.

Hey Larry, been watching your videos for a couple of years, i have 3 dogs a Bullmastiff and 2 Boerboels. Used your advice years ago about the benefits of well behaved dogs as opposed to well trained dogs, works wonders. Got my dogs out every morning on a public beach with tons of other dogs all being walked, my dogs stick to me, watch me , never interfere with the other dogs and are all off leash with minimum obedience training. I’m going to steep myself on your videos and change my philosophy, Larry. I have a 15 month old Golden. He’s probably 95 pounds to my 130, and I can’t always control him. I always wondered, “ ok, he can sit, stay, down, come. Now what? Who cares? He’s a jerk when people come over. We can’t have people over. “. So I’m changing things up. I’ll be listening all the time! You have no idea how much of a god-send your videos have been for me. Long story short, I made the completely uninformed decision last year to get a male golden retriever puppy and then three months later I got a female Dalmatian puppy. (Oof.) Then this summer I rescued a boxer/rottweiler mix who's 4 years old and was abused, from what I can tell. My golden retriever had established himself as alpha and started getting aggressive with the new rescue, and the boxer/rottweiler didn't back down so there's been a lot of dog on dog aggression in the home. I was starting to lose hope until I found your channel and now I'm committed to working to get harmony back in my home. Seriously, thank you.

I say this to my clients all.the.time 🙌🙌🙌 It can't be expressed enough, just how much the actual relationship and manners within the house, impact on the dog in all other areas. Train your dog....great, but if their basic manners suck and they are rude and pushy in the home, it will always limit the results in your training. Do you expect kids, when they eat out, to have table manners when these manners are not reinforced in the home, NO.....your dog needs to know house manners first and then these can be transferred outside. Great post Larry.....couldn't be more in love with the way you train dogs!!🥇

That was us- "I think it helped a little" after 21 days board & train. Your videos combined with the training he did get (ecollar), he's coming along. I train with the ecollar and w/o the ecollar-- when he came back from his Board & Train, he had learned to obey when the collar was on. Had to change that immediately.Your video saying even 10 minutes a day was extremely helpful. Watching the behavior between the two dogs from the introduction of the puppy onwards, now that the 'puppy' is 9 months old saved us I think. Will be night crated for a year, and crated when I'm gone for at least 2 years- friends really disagree, but he lives with me, and these are necessary rules for a high-energy 65 lb Bernedoodle. Good manners mean I'm not stressed/angry and reacting, he's happy, the other dog is happy, the house is happy. Thank you!

I could listen all day and I think what you are charging is very fair for what you offer. I'm going to be using your techniques with inside the home to better shape both of my dogs so they can exist together.

Omg! Okay I have watched literally every dog trainer on line for the past several years. You sir are the man! - I have taught special education for 30 years. Behavior management with difficult students. With whom I have had phenomenal success. Okay now I am retired and live in a van. I am going to get a male Rottweiler puppy -excellent breeder. I am going to teach my dog to be the most well behaved dog. I have phenomenal kids, I have had phenomenal students, I will have a phenomenal dog! Based on consistency, boundaries, trust. This is I believe your philosophy-? Well mannered always. This is the expectation take no prisoners! Lol loved the video!! - the best teachers are those that remember how it was to be a child. The best dog trainers know how a dog thinks! “ End result is does your dog respond to your verbal demand”

This is a great video, but you are assuming that everyone knows what a "well behaved" dog does (or doesn't do) at home, or what sorts of things are/are not acceptable around the home. It might be helpful to follow this up with specifics about your household rules/expectations for your dogs, and strategies you use to enforce them. It may be obvious stuff for you, but that's why you're the pro!

I really like this video. A lot. I’m a new trainer. I feel like the obedience is a pathway to build the relationship in the home. I like the idea of obedience in the home to set the tone for leadership. I didn’t know the idea about the dog coming for petting to the sofa- interesting. I have walked dogs for ten years, also and the prong collar has been the only way I have ever got a dog to heel. I believe the idea of in home behavior and outside work with heeling before any ecollar work is essential to create and shape the dog. I have only used the ecollar with one client and it’s a scared dog. We used it to enforce the dog back to place with door etiquette. It is working well. He conditioned with his owner for over a week. My ecollar has a pager and I’ve been taught to use that when a dog is loading on another dog. I hope this will work. We will take this scared aggressive dog out eventually and when he starts to lose it - distract him with the pager. Ty for your sincerity and kindness. Ur book is really good. 😊

Firstly. As always Larry, love your videos. My only issue is I'm left really in the dark. I feel like I've done everything I could by intuiting what boundaries and limits so shape the dogs behaviour as a photo looks like. Crate time, no going through doors first, not eating until i give a command. But without videos or examples of what daily life with a young dog looks like in the home (my boy is 10months) it just feels like guess work. For example, when you say you blew up or exploded on Bruno for giving a bad glance to Bear, whta does that actually mean? A raised voice, shouting, a physical correction. I have no idea the spectrum of responses by which to gauge my own. Between hearing positive people saying don't angrily say the dogs name I don't know how to set boundaries. I understand it may she difficult but learning, or really thinking hard of how to communicate what actually needs to be done would be so helpful to us novice dog owners really trying our best but falling back on our limited interpretation.

This video was screaming at me! I needed this. I'm one of those crappy dog owners who doesn't give my dogs direction. We have a 10 yr old German Shepherd who is great not because of my husband and I she just is a good dog. Then we had a small stray show up 7 years ago. He is a westie mix. Well we spoiled him rotten which never really caused any issues till we added a 3rd dog. He is a Jack Russell and now we have issues. They need bounders and to know we are the leaders not them. I told my husband please watch this. We both need to change our behaviors and start treating them like dogs! Thank you so much!

Hi Larry, so glad I came across you and your content. Have an almost 2 year old Mali. But this how you live with your dog is a game changer!! Thank you sir, thank you. Still a work in progress but notice the change already in him simply by all us keeping to some simple house rules. If you have time it would be insightful to know how you blew up on Bruno when he eye balled Bear (incidentally same name of my Mali) just want to get the balance right. As there our time he growls (rumbles) at my 14 year old boy. I’ve explained that my boy needs to build a relationship with Bear and that good things come from him and not just someone that plays with Bear when Bear wants to play.
