I am a new dog trainer for a pet store that didn’t train me outside of 3 2-minute videos, I am learning as I go from other trainers online but I hope someday years from now I can be as great as you are. I really respect you and your mentality. Thank you Larry!

These three tips are literally the key for dealing with aggressive animals of any species. From a guy who has made a living his whole adult life being able to train and handle dangerous exotic animals (lions, tigers, elephants etc) I can promise you everything said here holds true. Positive confusion is something trainers of large predators and elephants have been using since the beginning of that field of training. Not forcing the down the same. I can train a tiger to lie down in a few seconds with pressure in the right way, and I did for year, but later when I realized that “waiting” for it would bring a stronger result I changed my system completely. I’ve trained around 50 since then without pressure and it is always the easiest behavior to obtain. Thank you Mr. Krohn for this Goldmine of information. I hope many trainers stumble upon this as I have.

Larry, great tips on e-collar training. A while ago I read one of John Dahl's books on gundog training. He advocated that sometimes it is beneficial to hit the nick a split-second before issuing the command. Unwisely, I dismissed the suggestion as backwards: why "punish" or confuse the dog before he knows what he's to do. Long story short, your videos made me give the suggestion a try. Not only does the dog respond much faster and with more enthusiasm, he also responds on much lower levels, even in high distraction environments. Thank you for all the education you provide (I am sure my labrador wants to thank you too!).

Marking and rewarding unwanted behavior is blowing my mind a little. Really interesting stuff.

I agree about the down, especially on the first day of puppy classes. Tell all my students, don't worry, we'll get there. This is their first class, I don't even go there on day 1. Thank you!

I'm new here, and loving your stuff. The concept of reading another dog's signals to know when to mark/click your own dog's ability to suppress unwanted responses, is fascinating. Thanks man! Sounds like quite a challenge to develop the skill to implement properly, but more than worth the effort. I'm definitely going to be putting in some work on my own development, so that I can use this later.

A flat buckle collar, absolutely! We use 2" flat buckle collars, they're wonderful.

Hey bro, I’m learning a lot from your advices and I have a great respect for you and guys who are thinking about how to improve communication with dogs. But… let me tell you one little tip, coming from the sound technician; you have a great mic, but try to speak more to the mic, not above it; the difference in your voice is really noticeable (while you have a great smooth voice for recording) and it’s a shame not to do it the best way possible. Sorry, I hope this was not rude or something 😅 Stay strong 👍

The confusion your speaking about is just “short wiring their brain” for a very brief period to allow a follow up behavior/ adjustment. Makes perfect sense..

Youll have to address what had changed, or why you prefer to use a leash with puppy training vs 3 yrs ago. I used the methods you spoke of in your "what to do when bringing a new puppy home for the 1st time" (around 18min mark) & i couldnt be more pleased with the results...wondering how my dogs would of done with a leash....could they of been easier to train or been better all around? Very interesting.

Great video I have learned so much from you already I have a 17-month-old 80 pound female German Shepherd and I saw an earlier post about your opinion of prong collars this morning I hooked up to her flat collar and leash and actually she really was a lot calmer my big problem is when people go by on a bicycle or jogger goes by she goes crazy or another dog I have an E collar coming today and I’m going to use what you have already mentioned and some other post and continue to research your post and see how to use it for the first time and I’m hoping it will work thanks for your posting of these and I wish you peace for the coming new year as well.

I really really appreciate your videos. My lab is two years old and yes I should have started ecollar training a long while ago but have been frozen because I know the foundation is the most important and I haven't wanted to screw it up. So I've had this collar a good six months and I keep charging it up and watching more of your videos and freeze. Well last week we were at the park and he wanted to play with a dog across the parking lot, I'm 140lbs and he's 86lbs of young muscle. I'm sure you can visualize me literally doing the Superman, feet off the ground, fully airborn and him sprinting off. It's the first time he's utilized his knowledge of his strength to pull free and I know that it is a dangerous situation for both of us. It won't be the last now that he understands that ability. So I am watching everything you have to offer and I'm going in. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts, experiences, and knowledge. You make a difference. Wish us luck.

Larry I came across some of your posts when I started researching Bart's NEPOPO site. I've been training & competing w/my own dogs for more than half of my life. 50 years to be exact. I always start with a puppy - a clean slate i can mold and not inherit other people's problems. I've been to so many seminars with world champions but so few of them touch on the things you & I touch on; i.e. , what is the dog seeing? How is he interpreting and learning from what you are saying and doing; not just when you are training but 24 hrs a day. I could go on and on not possible here. How i would love to chat w/you.

Great video. These methods are also 100% scientifically sound in terms of how dogs learn. Not every method will work with every dog, mostly as the owner is the hard to control variable, but what for me anyw at, s always needed is trust (from all parties) and the hard to teach part for owners - good timing and how to read a dog correctly.

100% I never forced the down with my German shepherd and she hated it for the longest time now she ends up in a down when I ask for a sit 😂 so I tell her up and say sit again and then she goes into her sit

How do I find a dog trainer like you in my area-west if St Paul Mn?

Ive took on a 16 month old labradoodle he hasnt been trained he can sit stay paw and that for food or ball but his walking is terable on a lead. Do i start from the beguinning having him on the lead all the time. Ive had him for just under a week and for aome reason he started pissing in the hall way even though the back door was open and he just been out there. I kepted watching him to try and catch him in the act and the one time i didnt watch him he done it. It was like he was trying to do it without me catching him. There is a male dog next door about 14 years old none aggressive. Mine keeps pissing and pacing up and down the garden path can i stop him marking as we have to walk past and on that path and can i get him to piss in same place all time or atleast not on the path where we walk on. Do i not give him free access to garden and bring it all back like hes a pup or do i have to approach it differently as hes 16 months old? Id massively appreciate any advice

What if you have visual impairment and can’t see the other dog right away before your dog ? So I don’t know if I could click when the other dog is triggering my dog ? - I can look at my dog’s body language, but what about another dog that’s too far away for me to see ?

Iv worked with a trainer with my pit four a month now I got a little progress he still won’t recall he chases everything still he is very stubborn she says he is smart and very trainable but hes still not wanting to do things just simple obedience stuff help I love him I don’t want to fail him and I I’m some where

Are you implementing treats or praise with the fearful dogs once they come to you and dont react? Or is the stopping of the ecollar (confusion) reward enough?

I know you don’t train farm animals but I need help with teaching my 1 1/2 yr how to load in the back of a truck. I have tried many different ways and all he will do is throw his paws up there and wait for me to lift him. HELP PLEASE.

Larry, if a dog is used to an invisible fence, which basically uses a "shock" to warn it what NOT to do, or punish it for going past a certain point, will it be confused by using an E collar the way you do, where basically the "tap" means something good?

Confusing the dog then rewarding doesn't read to me like marking and rewarding. Not at all. It reads like the opposite. It reads like getting rid of a mind set then rewarding for not being in that mindset. I see the same thing in people. They often change their mind when "shocked" or confused, whether it is pleasant or unpleasant.

hi, thank you for all the information you give through your videos i have a question about "rewarding unwanted behavior" you say: "when the dog's mind switches right before blowing up, we click, because the dog is strongly conditioned to the clicker it would provide confusion and for a split second he is looking toward the owner instead of worrying about the other dog and gets rewarded" if you want to teach a dog to look at you on cue, dont you do exactly that? make a sound, dog looks at you and you reward looking at it like this, it seems that you are not actually rewarding unwanted behavior, but what you really do is interrupt unwanted behavior, (the sound is enough to take the dog's mind away because dog is so strongly conditioned to it), and during this interruption the dog looks at you and gets rewarded for that look he just gave you if you were to truly reward unwanted behavior wouldnt you just feed the reward into the dog's mouth as the dog is tense and fixated on the other dog? what if, even though the dog is strongly conditioned to the click, he would ignore the click completely?

Hi Larry, being from the Uk we are very anal about Obedience. Your way just feels like a great lift off my shoulders. I can see myself enjoy it already. I didn’t get the social part quite. If you are not socializing with other dogs as in Obedience where they are with other puppies which they would play with at class. Most puppies like play which how we get them not now to go for every other dog they meet. How does work if they are not socialized in that way. Hope not a silly question but could you address this in one of workshops. Kind Regards Carole

Christmas puppies :( :( :( :( Shelters will be full of dogs in June when those cute puppies are big, undisciplined bulls in china shops. Everything should start off, am I committed to this dog for the next 10+ years. Then starts the training. .... but that's the pessimist in me. If we remove the dog from the stimuli or remove the stimuli the dog is aggressive to- the dog wins. So we have to face the problem and correct the dog, right? A lot of trainers still recommend to cross the street or turn away with our dog if we see an "enemy" approching.

Can I have online trainer?

I'm going to try the clicker with my dog aggressive dog. He has gotten much better through training, but still tends to bark, lunge at other dogs on walks if the other dog is reacting. If I click soon as he zones in on the other dog, when he looks at me, I reward. But then he always looks back at the dog again. Do I keep clicking and rewarding until we are past the other dog?
