I had a Lorkie: Little girl. She was the female version of Bam Bam. Same color and she weighed 4 pounds. I had her for 16 years. When she was 6 the Vet said she had cancer and I would have her for about 6 more months. She went into remission and lasted 10 more years. Lahso Apso/Yorkie. I miss her so much.

Of course. When someone whom you dearly love ❤ 💖 ❣becomes so ill, you count each day with that someone as absolutely, doubly precious and beautiful and specially important to you in your own life. Your little Lorkie learned how special you are to her and you learnd what a God-given, beautiful little soul she is, purrfectly created just for 🎁 💖 💕 you by the One Who loves you both best.

That’s so crazy that a Lorkie, as you called it, weighed 4lbs full grown, especially since Lhasa Apso/Yorkie mix dogs generally weight between 7 and 18lbs full grown.

I got a Malachi 3 mos ago. I am 70 &have been in Quarantine. She has brought me so much joy. I’ve been lonely since my kids are out of state & my husband is deceased. I don’t know how I could have coped without her.

It is critical that people grieve. Our sun died from a side effect from hormones to stop egg laying. I carry a pendant on my neck with a picture of my girl. These days we share the home with a chihuahua mix. He is my diabetes dog. I know that day will be utterly hard. This dog has saved my life.

The team worked so hard to save Charlie, including Maisie. His passing is so sad. I am glad that it worked out for Bam Bam and little birdie. Great job by all.

Scott and his staff care so much for their patients viewers can’t help but fall in love with the animals, watching them with Charlie and finding out he didn’t make it, I as a viewer feel like my heart is broken as if Charlie was my much loved dog too. They are amazing caring people

Ah, I have a blind budgie. He is perfectly healthy and loves life. I don't know if he was blind from birth, or if he had any trauma, I don't know. He's not in pain and he loves to play and enjoy life.

Heart breaking to see what happened to Charlie, how devastating! And personally painful for me to watch Bam Bam's diabetic situation, so glad he got better, but all it takes is one bad day for it to become critical. I lost my most beloved dog, a Yorkie from complications due to diabetes. 7 years later it still hurts.

Poor Charlie. So very sad. But I think some animals make the hard decisions for us. He knew his family was out of town. He stuck it out for them. This was his opportunity to slip away. He was ready. Bless you Charlie. Gone but not forgotten.

it is actually quite strange that that bird was so friendly, especially if it was supposed to be wild. It makes me wonder if maybe that bird was dumped after it became blind, or if she may have escaped and ran into something.

Maybe she is just smart enough not to try and fly off when she can't see a thing. Parrots *are* supposed to be rather clever. Or maybe she actually lived with Scott's in-law for a while already before they recorded the episode about it.

I rescued a Australian Shepherd when he was 18 months old with the purpose of training him as a service dog. The client moved into an assisted living center and decided not to take him. I had him half trained and decided to keep him as we fell in love with him. 2 months later he began losing weight and became lethargic to where all of a sudden he couldn't even walk. Taking him to the emergency vet it was determined he was diabetic and we started him on insulin. At 9 years old, he continues to be happy and healthy other than losing his vision a month ago. (This had been coming on for the last 2 years as a normal side effect of the diabetes.) We have no problem giving him insulin twice a day and keeping track of his blood sugar. I wouldn't trade him for anything in the world!

Poor Charlie. He went through so much in life. I was hoping to see Bam Bam's do the checking of his blood sugar too and the doc teaching her about the blood glucose levels. Diabetes affects a lot of dogs but you don't see the dog owners being taught what to look for in warning signs or the daily treatment needed to control it. This vet is definitely amazing with his patients.

I wanted to be a vet growing up, but I’m nowhere strong enough to handle such a loss. Though, I do plan on fostering, it isn’t nearly as helpful but I still want to help save lives too. 💛

I didn't become a vet for the very same reason but please don't short-change the value of fostering. The time taken makes such a difference for animals that may otherwise be euthanized. Learning basic obedience and socialization with people and other animals can mean the difference between life and death.

My son spent some time at the vet college in Cornell University in Cornell NY. A few things changed his mind about being a vet. One of them was vet checking a cow for pregnancy. He took a farrier course there and it also kind of freaked him out that they used cadaver hooves to train on. Not all hugs and kisses but a very rewarding job if you are up for it.

Not nearly as helpful? I don't know... this way you can make a huge difference in some animals lives. There is more to an animals happiness than just its healthcare after all. And they will propably hate you less if you aren't the human needling them with vaccines and other things. :D

To join the choir: fostering may be even of more value than the vet's job... Because the invested time, one-on-one care, love and attention, fixes a whole lot more problems than you may think. And that kind of time and individual attention is something a vet can't afford (or nobody could afford that time at a vet's rates). So yes, good on you if you follow through with that plan!!! My main occupation is the socialization and basic training of service dogs for the motory disabled. I do this as a volunteer being a disabled person myself. This basic training happens one-on-one because it requires a lot of time and attention. In the course of 2 - 2.5 years, the cost of operation (i.e. professional trainers (=coaches who train the individual trainers and who do the final training of the adult dogs), vet expenses, work space expenses) is 25K EUR per dog. During that time, we get free food (sponsored), free pet accessories (sponsored), and free time and devotion from the individual trainers like me. But that "free" time adds up to a massive amount. I did a calculation once, because somebody had asked me how "much of an education can be given in 2 years" after I had claimed that our dogs' certification could be compared to a human's bachelor's degree... Turns out I was wrong. The time put in by the volunteer alone, adds up to the full school career (time in class counted vs. time spent on the dog with their training and purpose in mind) of a MASTER graduate, counting from his first day in kindergarten... If all those hours were paid at minimum wage, they would add up to 100K EUR, meaning that the volunteer effort is "worth" 4 times more than the professional effort. So don't ever let anyone tell you that it's "just" fostering. It's a life saving rehab that is every bit as valuable than life saving surgery but with a lot more effort and time required! =))

Fostering is incredibly helpful!!! Also if loss is an issue you will likely struggle with fostering as well, though it depends on the animal and age group you are fostering. I foster neonatal kittens so see a fair amount of death in the super littles or super sick babies, but if you're thinking adult dogs or something you should be ok.

Dog was not eating any food for 3 days and she brings him then to the vet... He list 50% of their body weight. That dog survived by pure miracle.

@@DuneDemon8 a dog not eating three days won't kill it my dog does it to it happens with small dogs, and alot of times they will stop eating if they miss their owner. They were obviously watching to see if he would start eating.. good grief judgemental much.

@@kristaj428 From my point of view it was unacceptable. I had a small dog, poodle. If something was wrong one day, and it was not OK the other, we would be at the vets office. He was very attached to me, but if I had to go on a trip he would eat without a problem because I would left behind option 2 - food that he can't resist, new toys, my worn shirt etc. I see dogs as kids, if your kid is not eating a whole day you are at the doctors office right?

@@kristaj428 according to her story, the dog had been eating well for the first week, only the last 3 days it didn't eat... And while you are partially right that not eating for 3 days wouldn't kill it per se, it could muck up electrolytes, especially given the "lots of drinking and going to the bathroom" (again: according to her story). And if you dog manages to lose 50% of its weight in 3 days, even you - aloof as you are - would have noticed something was up after 1 day already. But in truth, I don't believe a word from her story. She didn't feed it at all, locked it up somewhere and never even patted it. Otherwise she would have noticed the emaciation. She stopped giving it water because the poor stressed dog peed in the house, hence the dehydration. Other option: she gave the dog crap food while billing expensive food, dog feasted on cakes and cookies out of sheer starvation, causing diabetic signs. Last but not least: she locked the dog away not noticing that it required food. Dog ate something poisonous or rat poison (which explains the much drinking yet dehydrating) and she let it be for 3 days... (yes, all these options could mess up a body so badly that it develops diabetes in such a short time) And by the way, a healthy dog may stop eating out of extreme stress. Missing their owner will not create such stress unless it's being mistreated by the caretaker. Aloof reactions like yours, trying to make people think that having sound judgement is a bad thing, are what is wrong with the world these days. Trying to cover up such blatant neglect is criminal in itself... I hope the owner sues that "babysitter".

I only left my cat one time, when I had to go to an school exchange... He ran away and never came back... After that I never even once thought about leaving my other cat at home while going on vacation... Poor Charlie... He probably missed his family so much

Scott is fantastic…the shows are informative.. I can relate to Maltese, Havanese, and mixed breeds. I cry and feel so badly when things go sideways. The best, is how much everyone loves their pet.

I feel for poor Bam Bam. My own diabetes made it easier when my mother's cat developed diabetes too. I taught her how to give injections to him. It was actually my own experiences with the illness that alerted me to Paddy's diagnosis. I noticed similar symptoms to myself, realised how much water he was drinking. I have some medical training in people, and that skill is somewhat transferable to animals. I listened to his heart rate and breathing, looked up what his BPM should be, and was alarmed when I realised how abnormally high it was. Previous to that, his appetite had massively increased, so my mum did not realise that this was a problem. His breathing was starting to become laboured, the body has to work extra hard with the illness. You can also use the small blood glucose testing kits on animals too, so that helped. With cats you can get the drop of blood needed from the ear or between the toes if you are not trained to take bloods. Thankfully that meant we caught it early for him, rushed him off to the vets and got the diagnosis. I have severe diabetes, and like Bam Bam, mine went unknown until I passed out and it was at a severe stage. It is so confusing, you feel awful, exhausted, continually thirsty, all your joints ache, and it gets hard to understand what is going on. You go completely off food, and start throwing up. But you don't know why. When it comes on suddenly like that, its terribly dangerous, and it is even more confusing when your lifestyle is fine, your diet is fine, and you are young. It makes no sense, and you do not feel well enough to try to explain what's happening to someone. Animals can't even talk to tell us when they feel very bad, and they try to hide it too, more often than not. Cats and rabbits are notorious for this: by the time they show noticeably severe symptoms it's pretty dire already. So I'm not surprised that the babysitter did not realise what was going on. By the time Bam Bam was refusing food, he'd probably urinated out a lot of the glucose from his fat reserves and was moving into muscle mass degeneration. I'm so glad that Bam Bam got the care he needed. Having to have injections for the rest of your life is a small price to pay. But as Scott said, there's danger from low blood sugar as much as there is from high blood sugar. There have been times when I've had a diabetic attack where people have ignored me trying to get help from them because they think I am drunk. That's what it makes you sound like, because your brain stops working properly.

For people in the U.S. or anywhere else which tend to use mg/dL for blood sugar measurements, Bam Bam's first 18.63 mmol/L test value corresponds to 335.7 mg/dL. He went up all the way to 30 mmol/L, which is 540.5 mg/dL.

i know the feelings off charlie's owner. my dog has leishmania to. but i know this can happen to with my little fay. she is stable now but that can change in a minute.

I’m sorry , I’m a hopeless lover of all things animal...I have learned so much...I also learned there are Nurse Vets? I was a Registered Nurse here in the states for almost 40 years...I would love to do this!

PLEASE investigate the opportunities in your area to become a vet tech, as your education and experience will be of enormous benefit to both vets and the animals they treat. There are some differences between human and animal medicine, but many mammals react to disease, treatment and medication in a similar way. The big difference I always noticed when I switched from human to animal medicine was that, because animals can't tell us how much pain they have, they may - in many instances - be under treated for pain. Your experience with people who have painful conditions may be of help to vets who don't know how much pain an animal is experiencing. Most importantly, it will help the animals.

I like the concern and realization of cuddles/ snuggles that help. The vets I have dealt with in the US are uncaring and want money upfront before they will even make an appointment. The appointment is usually a week or more away and pets don't make it that long.

Thst poor dogs featured sound so like my kitty that passed away last May from chronic anemia. They tried everything they could but she was elderly and it was just her time.

I'm the go to "pet sitter" among my friends and family, and yes, your babies know when you're gone. BUT if they're in their environment and still getting food and treats, generally they do well.

They really don't especially when they're old because stress takes a harder toll on them overall. My dog didn't do well at all the entire time my parents were in florida on vacation

I love this show but I cannot watch this particular episode in any comfort. Still grieving the passing of my own darling One. But I am finding it easier to embrace the gifts 🎁 she gave me - joy & grins, love & strength, serenity 💖 & a deep sense of self worth. Blessings to you along with sweet memories, more & more giggles as you remember the sweet times better & better.
