It's amazing how resiliant dogs are. Even after terrible things happen to them. With the right leadership, structure, patience, and understanding- they can learn to trust again and enjoy life. This dog has the right people and the right program to do just that! Great stuff, Tom!!

Queenie is such a pretty girl. It’s wonderful that her owners are so concerned about her well being and happiness. Her progress and that of her owners is nothing short of amazing. They certainly came to the right trainer. Thank you for another great video Tom. With each successive one, I find another little tip of something that I either do incorrectly or that I don’t do at all. The cumulative knowledge in your videos and our practice is the only reason I can take any of my dogs out in public.

This video might be a huge missing key for me in my training. I've got an american bulldog too, no abuse luckily but some of the same reactive types of issues with the lunge barking. No bites and the lunge and bark are both warning and bluff. Can't seem to get him not to react so I've been trying to focus on accountability but here you talked a little about how less can be more so maybe I need to find ways to hold him accountable while also being more subtle and chill in some way. Also he tends to be worse in the truck than anywhere else and you talked a little about how being in a smaller space can make a dog feel so that makes sense. Great video man, I love being able to learn these things and apply and test them with my buddy to help me be a better leader and buddy for him. I appreciate you

🥲 I have tears in my eyes, what a great couple and such an intelligent, beautiful dog. We got an older Bluetick Coonhound who was rescued off the streets and was so emaciated. She was in the shelter for 6 mos before she came home with us. I sometimes get choked up wondering what awful stuff she went through during her life because she too gets so frightened of new things and people. She’s not aggressive to people, she hides instead, so I agree, these dogs do have some lingering PTSD and it takes time and patience. My dog refused to heel, sit etc, was not food motivated and she knew nothing. I got a prong collar because I watch Tom’s videos and in less than 15 minutes she “got it” and bang, we had a relationship and began building trust. The part about voice inflection really hit home because I know I do that too sometimes. That was a great point! These owners and their dog are SO wonderful, I learned a lot from this very special training session. Well done 👍

This channel is my comfort zone. I have my first adult foster that came from an animal cruelty case (I'm used to puppies and younger dogs), and I was her last hope before being pts. She is a dream with the family, but I just found out she's reactive to random sounds, so I'm trying to figure out what all of those triggers are. The hardest part is being able to do all of this safely, because other people and their dogs are the only variables I can't control.

I recently had a GSD with a similar issue. Through trial & error; we learned that I got much better results to have my shepherd approach a stranger on his time, vs a stranger merely walking up & reaching out to pat him 🥴. My shepherd was a West German show line GSD; and was basically an untrained personal protection dog.

I had the male version of this exact dog. American bulldog that was as good a dog you can have but the key was trust and proper leadership. Every person had to follow my don't look touch or acknowledge the dog, ignore him. People who love dogs need to learn how to properly meet new dogs and not make it about themselves and going omg hi doggy your so cute I'm just gonna walk right up to you and pet you is selfish and the worst thing you can do to a dog you just met.

We go camping during the summer and walking him while he drags me back and forth across trails aggressively smelling every single thing is not a good time. He's 110 pounds and I am going to end up getting hurt if I don't get this under control.
@Sk8erByTW
@Sk8erByTW Жыл бұрын
From one GSD owner to another, its almost always a lack of exercises or mental stimulation. Your GSD is likely sniffing on the walk so intensely because they are bored. A good starting point- tack on one solid 20 min off-leash play session per day to your normal exercise routine. You should see results within a week or two. Best

@@tesslee100 Sounds like some creativity will be needed to encourage him to play more... If all else fails, a good game of chase should liven him up! My GSD is afraid of toys but if yours isn't, a game of fetch is another tried and true method
@rocco2451
@rocco2451 Жыл бұрын
It is so frustrating when they don’t listen to you. I have had dogs that really don’t like toys so are not interactive with humans and playing. Yep, I have labs that won’t fetch! Lol! You mention issues with 1 dog but then say your “dogs” like to run the fence? It’s good you have a fenced in yard. It’s a good opportunity to work on your obedience. Some people don’t realize that obedience work for dogs is extremely tiring mentally. I would work on obedience with your problem child outside by itself. If outside is too much start inside. I would make him heel on that fence line without running it all crazy. The more obedience you have in your own backyard, the more you will have outside in the real world. There’s no miracle cure. It takes time and won’t happen overnight. But if you stay committed, you’re dog will come to respect you and be more likely to listen to you. It starts at home. P.s. I wouldn’t let any of the dogs run the fence line. It’s a bad habit that carries over into real life situations. If they don’t have to listen to you at home why should they listen anywhere else. 🤷‍♀️ Good luck 🍀
@tesslee100
@tesslee100 Жыл бұрын
@@rocco2451 We have 2 dogs, both rescues. The other one is a GSD mix. She is so good. She just listens. I do take Steele out by himself to train. He is the exact opposite of what you would think of when you think of a GSD. He isn't afraid of anything, and he is overly confident. He does love a frisbee, ball or a stick, but he likes to carry them around or catch them, but not play fetch with them. He only has 2 issues with obedience. Walks and us getting in and out of the vehicle. He barks uncontrollably for about 5 minutes when entering and exiting the vehicle.

My new favorite thing about this channel, his house supportive commenters are of owners. I'm weary of watching owners look stupid or being told how ignorant they are, or how all their dogs problems are their fault. (Which, yeah, often is true). Here I see the onus being put on the lack of education, information, awareness and follow through. I just really appreciate dog owners and enthusiasts supporting dog owners when they're at their lowest and need intensive training. 👏👏👏

Thank you for this! We bought a home in 2020 and got a GSD mix- from the county ‘shelter’ he was so scared and once he learned to trust us he was great. Life happened, new neighbors with an untrained aggressive Pitty attacked our boy, and the lockdowns of course kept us home a lot more, and now he is very attached to us and scared of others. Very easily excited. We know he needs more socialization with dogs and people but don’t know where to start and want to be consistent. We love our boy and it still breaks my heart when he runs away from folding laundry or opening a garbage bag- makes me so sad for whatever may have happened to him but greatful he either ran away or was ‘dumped’ (he was a county stray hold when we found him online) and we really want him to be more confident outside of our family and our home so he can be more active with us and not so stressed. Thank you 10000x for all your doing and sharing with the world

Best explanation i heard about how to give a command to a dog is that dogs hear and respond better to poppy sounds. A snap sound of something that fell off will more likely to make a dog jump then a truck slowly driving by. So when you give a command, you need to make the start of it snappy and not long and rounded.

Hey Tom I love these videos, it's like you put out content with dogs that struggle with issues I'm working with as a trainer and it helps spark new ideas. Last week I started with with a dog that has a lot of confidence issues and was looking for different ways to build up his tolerance to loud noises and fast movements. Looking forward to the next video

Your videos are great but what isn't great is when trying to reach your staff to discuss what training course is best for the rescue I need to help, and no one returns an email or a call. I am picking up a dog this weekend I have rescued from a horrible situation from a local shelter who notified me that he is dog aggressive, and they are going to euthanize him. I just could not allow that, as this dog is truly a sweet dog-- he was chained to a pole all his life and I can only imagine what that was like. However, I have two dogs and need help in properly training this dog in hopes that I can get him to a place where he is adoptable and not endanger my dogs.

Will obedience control violent attacks by triggers? Sudden quick movements, noises, shrieks? Seems triggers can launch uncontrollable prey drive.
