How do you train a service dog after they have been through a traumatic car accident? Dogs like people can suffer from types of PTSD. This sweet service dog Stormi has some fears that can limit her ability as a working dog due to the accident. Watch Tom work with Stormi and her handler to rebuild the training needed to be successful.

Loved this video and so glad Tom was able to help you Deanna & Stormi! I am also a trainer (my methods are just like Tom's so I love to watch his videos) and I am also an energy worker and I just thought I would mention to you that you can also do energy healing sessions to help dogs out with PTSD and all sorts of issues. Look into Bodytalk and Reiki to help Stormi with any remaining deep subconscious issues that the training may not have helped. Dogs LOVE energy work. Both modalities can be done in person or distance. Congrats on the successful sessions! :)

One of the things that always hurts my heart is that dogs don't understand the why behind bad things that happen. Like Tom mentioned in this situation, Stormi did not - can not - understand what a car accident is, why it happened, or that it won't happen again. She just knows that something really scary, really painful happened. This is where it is so important for us to be there for our pups, to advocate for them, and to show them that they can be confident again. I hope Stormi and her owner can get back to that place of confidence again. From the looks of it, they definitely can!

My service dog was doing great in her training and then people started stepping on her because of her size and she has regressed and started barking at people when they approach. I gave her a little break from work, and we started over, and she’s doing better, now it’s a little quiet woof, and she refocuses and is now able to handle training situations in grocery stores again without woofing with almost complete focus❤❤.

As a service dog handler, I can't imagine how hard things have been, not only for the dog but for the handler. Your service dog is your everything and often makes all the difference in the world when it comes to a handler's independence and wellbeing. If you're doing things right your dog should want to work. Traumatic experiences can happen so suddenly and take that joy and confidence right out of a dog. It's absolutely heartbreaking. I know many handlers who had to wash (retire) amazing service dogs who couldn't bounce back after a traumatic experience. You can see how hard Stormi's regression has affected her handler but I love that she hasn't given up all hope and is doing everything possible to help Stormi work through it. Thank you so much Tom for taking the time to help a fellow team out! Wishing for the best results!

I’m a service dog handler. I’m partners with my black lab girl Darcy. I understand the bond. It’s deeper than any pet. I know what it’s like to see your partner scared and shutting down. I’m not a professional trainer. But I somehow knew I had to keep exposing her to her fears. And celebrate her wins when she faced her fears! She highly values mom being happy and excited and praising her. We always have a quick play session after successfully work thru hard things! I’ve mostly learned from other trainers and service dog owners training their SD’s to apply my learning with her. I’m a owner trainer. We’ve learned from our mistakes and are always improving and maintaining our skills. The one place that seriously forged our bond and advanced her training by a mile: The heart of Philly PA for an extended weekend. Walking almost a mile 2 times a day thru heavy noisy traffic, people crowds, and smells. Going thru hotel situations: elevators with a big drop feel & packed with people, safely training escalators & calmly getting on and off, ignoring pet dogs barking and rushing at her, and anyone trying to distract her. City’s definitely expose and give lots of desensitisation opportunities. Thank you from another SD team for what you do ! They are literally a part of us! We depend on them, and they depend on us. Both dog and handler will got to the moon and back for each other! ❤️

Purposely so for now to continue my education and development of my philosophies. When I am feeling overwhelmed or like “my” training is incorrect due to where I work, I watch your videos. Love seeing the chemistry between this dog and their handler. Glad you were able to help them. Too many would enable the dog to continue being fearful af everything. You helped them start to push through that fear head on. And of course you are always so well spoken, respectful, and understanding of the owner's/dog's situation!

I had an accident with my lab. He was great, quiet in the car until then. We never had a peaceful ride after that. Screamed, yelped, barked, jumped, you name it. I had to travel 7 hours when I moved. It was torture for all of us. He never got over the trauma. He has since passed due to age but I still feel bad about his sudden change. I wish I could have helped him.

My dog and I were in a car accident. It wasn't flipping or anything but I was t-boned and my dog was thankfully wearing his harness and seatbelt so he wasn't flung around. It took months of daily desensitizing to get him to get into a car on his own after that. I can't imagine being in a worse accident making my dog scared of the world. Amazing and caring owner.

I am blown away by the entire video, Iam so grateful that you (TOM) exist to help dogs and solve the problems. This video was emotional for me. I can’t imaging what poor Stormy went through in that accident, but Iam glad she is gaining confidence and I hope she improves and gets back to where she was. I felt bad for her handler because the bond is too strong and to watch your dog shut down and feel helpless is heart breaking and life crushing. She is lucky to be in a place with amazing people like Tom to help them out. Thank you for sharing this and the wolves 🐺 too❤️❤️❤️🧿

I have a service dog, who is a weenie about everything, because he’s only a year and a half. As I’ve been desensitizing him to things, I can kinda understand her frustration of wanting her dog to be ok with everything. It’s takes a lot of patience and work. It takes everything out of you, but worth it.

As a psychological method, what you're using is called Exposure Therapy. The purpose is for the incrementally increasing exposure to the trigger factor to increase the threshold for what it is that sets off the dog's fight or flight till you reach a point wherein the normal experiences in a dog's day there are few to no triggers at all. Also, it resets the amygdala so that it doesn't respond to triggers as often.

Thank you for this awesome video. I find myself rewatching your videos and listening to you explain different things teaches me new things. I have a question: I have an intact GS male and we have been working on reactivity and aggression towards dogs and people. My question is about training. I am with our dog more than my husband who is my dog’s first connection. He did two sessions of training with him when we first got him. I am wondering if I am the one doing the majority of the training now, will this cause an issue for the dog? He seems to show some improvement at times but there is obviously something off because he is still reactive and aggressive.

You absolutely are training your dog. I train my dog. We walk through sheep, hares, squirrels all the time. I could easily bring her up to UK comp obedience if I wanted to do that again. My partner also trains my dog. He has NO IDEA he is. She jumps all over him, steals his food, It's the same if you have children, they don't train, but how they treat the dog, your rules must all "gel" for the dog, and all members of "the pack".

This guy is something else. He is ALWAYS so patient , I have NEVER seen him as much as raise his eyes as if to say…. Why aren’t you listening to me this dog will never learn! When he explains something he is so clear on what he wants you to do. I have learnt so much from him, but only him because of his whole attitude. He was born to do this and I think he has saved a lot of dogs lives and stopped a lot of dog owners from finding new homes for there dogs where it would all start again exactly the same way until finally someone has the dog and gives up so he goes to kennels and a possible horrible outcome.
