What I want want to say is, from a person who got a dog because it was the “cool” thing to do, at the beginning you would think that the trainer is kind of rude or not understanding of the owner, but after having two dogs that don’t get along and constantly fighting, it has made me realize it has everything to do with me and not the dogs. Thank you so much for giving me this well needed advice!! Slowly but surly my dogs are getting along and I’m becoming more confident of my training and my dog’s over well happiness

Thank God none of you in the comments are trainers. Hes a teacher, teaching, that takes patience. She's not stupid she's learning. I can only imagine how some if you raise kids..they get something wrong as they are learning and there you are telling them "your a special kind of stupid aren't you" . Well, my Rotty no longer lunges/growls at passersby. She even approaches new people and let's them pet her, for about 5 seconds. Then it's a little snarl/snap and that's enough. I don't push meetings at all. But I've never had so many people want to pet my dog, until I got a Rottweiler, hehe. And if I know that they have some dog savvy, and know about my dog. We sometimes try it again. But she's come a long way. Recently we were at the park and three dogs were barking at my dog from about ten yards off on our left, and right. And another from a car window. We walked right between them all, in silence. Thank you for time and effort Thomas. Your videos are top notch and have helped me, help her, a lot. She was in a very bad place when I rescued her. A lady that runs a Rottweiler rescue thanked me for my patience, and persistence. She said nobody else would have done that after getting nipped a time or two, hehe. And Zoey would have been put down. Well, I'm passing it on brother. I didn't do it alone. Thanks again. It's so important for dog owners to be able to predict and preempt their dogs subtle reactions. That dog's freeze is a warning before he follows up with his vocalisations. I like how this channel educates by showing examples. Way to go!

Your advice is absolutely sound and 100% right on target. As is usually the case, the dog could progress so much faster working with you, but we have to train the handlers and teach them how to be present and think ahead with these reactive dogs.

Great video. I've been working with a 2.5-3 year old rescue with lots of reactivity issues. Thanks to KZfaq, we've been working on it with some improvement, although there are some bad days. One thing that I found works is whistle training. When a potential freak out is possible, nothing like a highly distinct sound coming from her handler (me) to get her attention back. Like in the video, it's about timing, you need to get her back when she's at most in the yellow-orange zone, not dark red. I have a bruised fingernail to prove it (hand got caught in the leash)

I have a very anxious and nervous 14 week old puppy that I got 3 weeks ago. I have been watching your videos and implementing what I've been seeing. She has gotten so much better and so have I. She's so much better on the leash and I can tell she's an overall happier puppy! Thank you so much for your videos! Her and I still have work to do but we have come a long way! 😁

I couldn’t imagine being so out of touch with my own dog to not recognize beings seconds from an outburst when he was locked onto that dog on the bed in place command. Amazing Tom is able to patiently interact with these owners, I’d be undone.

These are really dog owner training classes. Most dogs end up bad because of their owners confusion. This owner is thinking it's about the dog not about her. She needs to understand that she is causing most of her dogs issues. Love this channel! Keep it up!

Absolute great stuff, and why I still have faith in the internet. We recently adopted a 2 year old GSD, and your online video lessons have been very helpful to us. It is refreshing to know all dog owners have this kind of resource to learn from.

I commend her for training with her dog even if she doesn't know nonverbal communication. She has to learn quickly to redirect before the reaction. Even when you told her what to look for, she didn't catch on. The dog was doing excellent and with percistance this dog will be very good company for her. Body language, the flagging tail, before the ears, escalates to a bark and or a lunge. The tail tells you to be ready to correct...the ears going forward tells you change the subject Now. Simultaneously, anticipate...respond, correct and reward.

I've had dogs all my life, since I can remember. Thank you for helping these animals and their owners . Dominance and discipline,once an owner allows just kind of beivor the to happen it will happen over and over. Don't just dominated a dog but just teach it, all animals what learning.

Tom is amazing. His observation is just amazing. He can tell when the dog's emotion is building up. I stare at the tail and ears but I cannot detect subtle changes. He is just amazing.

This is something that helps my clients on when to correct a bad behavior. I explain, if your dog was a toddler walking around in a backyard. You see him look down and see a rock, the baby picks up the rock, and holds his hand back getting ready to throw the rock at a window. Would you Correct the toddler when he threw the rock?? Or would you correct the toddler when he bent down to pick the rock up? Of course, as soon as you see the toddler picking up the rock, you would say NO, right. It’s the same thing with a dog. Don’t wait until he is barking, correct him as soon as he is looking towards the other dogs, and tell him leave it!! You want your dog to be looking at you at all time, the more the better. Just my opinion:) trying to be helpful. Thanks. Also, reward reward reward your dogs when they do the behavior you are asking them to do.

I just found your channel after seeing so many different training videos. DEFINITELY subscribed!!! I'm having sooooo many issues with my dog. He's a lab mix with a Shepard mother. He's 17 months old and he USED to be the biggest sweet heart but now he acts extremely similar to this dog. Just got him neutered yesterday and hoping that helps but I understand that it's mostly a behavior issue and am trying my best to try and train him. My issue is, this is my first dog ever. I have 3 kids as well and have been having a hard time having everyone in my household implement the same concept that I do. I'm at my wits end....its come to the point that people in the neighborhood are harrasing me and trying to get him euthanized. I'm so out of my element and feel like I really need help 😖😭. He is suchhhh an awesome dog at home, knows his commands and everything. But as soon as we step out...all hell breaks loose. He can easily jump out my backyard fence, it doesn't help that there's a playground complex right behind my house and kids are repeatedly teasing him. I need to work on desensitizing him but I have no clue where to start. He's my baby and my heart just absolutely breaks 😭🥺🤯

Wow! I have been watching some of your videos lately, because I really appreciate your approach with the dogs you work with, but this is the one video that really hits home. I have a dog with similar problems to work on, and while we're making steady progress, I feel like watching this will help us on that. Watching such a reactive dog calming down that quickly is really encouraging. My dog will not yet accept treats when he sees other dogs, but maybe we'll get there if I keep being sharper with my timing. Thank you!

I rescued a pittie 3 months ago longest inmate. Sweet around people working on leash training going well and dogs behind fences. I walk him everyday. But when he sees a dog on a leash its 0 to 20. I cant calm him because hes so reactive he is getting better but a block away he starts camping up. I dont know much about his history. But he is almost aggressive nervous. I keep with it and after dont move till he calms down.He is using a prong collar. I love him he is sweet can I get him past this. Hes about 2 1/2. Thanks I love the way you teach, i refuse to give up on him we are going to get this.

as someone who has trained many dogs im still learning and amazed at your skill and how good you are with the owners i wish you were in florida i could so use some help fine tuning my pooch

We have a potcake ( bull terrier/hound) she was rescued from Antigua. Many have said, the potcakes are very challenging. I have trained every dog I've owned and helped friends for over 40 yrs., This one is my challenge. She barks on our walks when she sees a dog. She is now 9 months and she's gone from barking at everything to now just dogs. I watched your video with the prong collar and finally found one, apparently they are trying to ban them in our province of Ontario. I wasn't sure how to fit it and I learned from your video with prong collars, they taught me wrong. Now we have it we think fairly fitted but it won't stay where we place it. We think it we take out another link, we won't get it attached together. The first time she wore it, bang, she was excellent, now we are up to a third time and she is better but now she is like she is getting used to it and challenging me, sometimes pulling and although she isn't barking, she still wants the other dog, all in play, not aggressive in a negative way. How much do u know about potcakes. I watch a video a night regardless if it applies to me, I love your videos.

Its wonderful to see a young chap retain the training methods that have been used for many years with a 21st century mindset. It is very frustrating treating a dog like a dog to get a "good dog" while those around you have been indoctrinated into the fluffy take 9 months to train your dog camp. I am new to the e collar so have enjoyed your video's about them, thanks. I do create structure, i do have rules and i can be the authoritarian with my dogs, but i am also the first one they want to snuggle with at the end of the day. Go figure :-)

I have a dog and i have a big problem with his behaviour and we dealt some serious situations in the past and i know it's us who made him become that way.. But god please forgive me because i did not have any knowledge anout training dogs. My father always thought the only solution for his bad behaviour was beating him since he was a puppy. But i knew he was wrong and i never let anyone beat him after that. I really need your help🙏he seem's to be living in stress everytime and i really love him to stay happy😩😭

I struggle with the timing and keeping calm inside when he does react especially if he happens to see the dog before I do. However I will never give up on learning how to correctly handle and recognize my dogs body language in order to guide him in overcoming his reactive behaviors.

I am dealing with this same thing with my dog. he is a barking lunging biting nightmare on walks and where Im located they do not offer anyting near what a great job you do. This video is fantastic! My husband and I suspected that our dog is most reactive to dogs that notice her and that her ears tell us who she was paying attention too! To see this dog build up to that boiling point was very helpful. She is a border collie-lab mix that has been attacked by dogs, so I believe her reactivity is fear based but also correcting the shepherding behavior is incredibly difficult because of how instantaneous and intense it can be. We have hired a balanced dog trainer that we are meeting in 2 weeks. Any advise on managing/correcting this situation in the mean time? Your channel has helped tremendously in shaping my view on training collars and structure!

Don't these people know how to say , " NO " to their dogs ? Tone of voice goes a LONG way in schooling any animal , horse or dog . This ladies tone never changes . If she told me something in that monotone , I'd ignore her too . That dog is telling on himself the whole time and she's just not getting it . Yes! I 💙 this so far! I have been binging your videos for the past couple of hours (I JUST found the channel, I wish I had found it long ago). I really wish I lived close to your service. I feel like my pups could benefit from an assessment to help point me in the right direction of everything I need to give them the best life. I know (and have been working on) some of the obvious issues, like how they want to go out the door first. You have some great ideas on that issue that I am definitely implementing. But there are other things that I don't know if I'd do a good job explaining? I'll try... they are brothers, 2 years old, about 35lbs each. Recently there has occasionally been some aggression between them. It happens most often when 1 is already inside the house and the other comes inside later. I know this isnt the case, but the best way to explain it is, it almost appears as though the 1st one inside is repremending the slow 1 for taking so long?? Lol idk.. Btw~ I do not reprimand either of them for being slow to come inside. They have a doggie door that allows them to come and go as they please. This situation has happened a few times now, which consist of fur standing on end, slow movements, smelling each other from nose to tip of the tail, grunting and huffing before relaxing and moving onto greeting each other. But on 2 occasions it graduated to also include actual growling (somewhat loudly) with a closed mouth snapping movement (neither dog actually bit or mouthed in that manner). It was basically the quick head movement with a louder growl. I dont know what's causing it nor do I know the best way to stop it. I've just done the best I think I can? Most of the time I can see it coming and stop it from happening by separating them before the 2nd dog comes inside. But not always. In that case, I immediately tell them "No". Then "Kennels". Which they happily oblige. I do not force them to stay there or anything. They just go lay down and eventually leave when they want to, usually 5-10mins or after a nap lol. I gave them each their own kennel/"their safe space" when I got the puppies... they do not view it as a punishment, but as a place they know they can go and decompress or whatever they want. Although the kennels were also/are used for training and etc. Should I be doing something else? Should their be some kind of punishment or repercussion to the behavior? When they both come inside and this does NOT happen then they do get rewarded and I do not tell them to go to their kennels. Where they go is up to them. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for putting up these fantastic videos. I really enjoy them and I will be sharing your channel with all of my family & friends with dogs. Keep up the great work!
