Dogs have played an important role in piano music for centuries. The keyboard may lack the timbral flexibility of a violin, say, but composers have devised many ingenious and hilarious ways of evoking the sounds, movements and characters of canines. So, why not join composer Frederick Viner as he explores some of the very best examples.
Many thanks to all the superb performers who kindly lent their recordings. Their full performances can be viewed here:

I am currently preparing material for a lecture-concert on Impressionists and Impressionism in music (and not only) at the end of April And I can tell you that, Yes, Eric Satie is such an interesting fellow. Of all the composers, he is the funniest to read about.

I find Schubert's depiction of barking dogs in his song 'Im Dorfe' (In the Village: no. 17 of the cycle "Winterreise") very lifelike and accurate, considering the time period it was written in. Interesting topic, cool video, great examples. Thanks.

Last year I remember having a dream in which I had composed a work for a small ensemble (like 12 instruments) in which the cellos played something that was supposed to imitate dog barks. I have no idea why, but that was it, I still remember how it sounds somewhat, I will perhaps write it in reality in day

Erik Satie, 'one of the world's great eccentrics'? Really? The guy was a third rate composer of frivolous elevator music who drank himself to death. More like a tragic figure - whose legacy also spawned several generations of equally worthless imitators like Phillip Glass and Simeon ten Holt. And his alcoholism isn't an excuse for any of that - Max Reger was a raging drunk as well and managed to kill himself with the bottle 15 years quicker but he was in fact a great composer.
@surr3al756
@surr3al756 Жыл бұрын
What does his eccentricity have to do with his skill as a composer, or his alcoholism? He was simply pointing out that Satie had many eccentric behaviors and did many eccentric things, for example, composing Vexations, a piece meant to be played 840 times in a row, and having an unusual diet and daily routine. The projection you're doing here is massive, and completely unwarranted.
