There is nothing quite as special as the tight bond that can develop between humans and their canine friends. Standing by our sides through times of peril, amazing stories have often emerged of the selfless and heroic deeds performed by dogs in the hopes of keeping their humans safe. During World War II, the founder of the PDSA, Maria Dickin CBE, wanted to recognize these acts of bravery. So, in 1943, she created what is now known as the Animal’s Victoria Cross, or the Dickin Medal, to honour the animals that, in their own way, fought alongside us.

We got a bomb dog about two months into our Afghanistan tour. We were told explicitly not to treat Bingo like a normal dog. This lasted approximately three hours before everyone spoiled him. Within a short time, we didn't even let Bingo leave the wire to do his job, one he did exceptionally well. We were willing to lose a Private to IEDs before Bingo. War is strange.

As I watched that segment I experienced the same thing. I kept thinking that dog deserved a Medal of Honor because there are incredibly brave humans who even wouldn’t have done what he did. That dog should be honored in all the history books. Actually all the brave animals that have served should be listed and honored with the same reverence we do with their human counterparts in the history books.

A lot of brave Canines perished in the line of duty in this way, grabbing a grenade and taking away from a group of soldiers both injured and not, extremely heartbreaking sacrifices that saved so many lives. A lot of these stories come from WW1, but only being properly recognized within the last 20+ years like a lot of Canine heroes from the first world war.

You should do a video about the WW1 dogs as well my favorite is Rags a former street dog adopted as a mascot for the American First Division who repeatedly carried messages to HQ and warned soldiers of incoming artillery at one point he was wounded in a simultaneous gas and artillery attack and taken to a nearby field hospital where several soldiers objected to a dog being given so much special treatment to which all the men of First Division stood up and said "Orders from headquarters." Which roughly translated means "Shut up and sit down or you're going to get your head kicked in." No messed with Rags when First Division was around.

The Canines heroes of any previous and current wars should be honoured any human soldier. So many perished in the line of duty helping their handlers and saving lives, I just wish way more often we would hear tell of their stories, and see them be awarded with the medals they more then deserve if they have not already. One of the things I love the most is the fact some of them were buried in war cemeteries, or other cemeteries alongside humans, with large headstones of their own to honour them and their service as we would any other human. I wish to hear more stories of canine heroes, as there are so many that deserve to be heard and remembered.

you should do a video on the other Dickin medal recipients (and just army animals in general), and if you do i hope you include Simon from the HMS Amethyst.

There's a story of a dog saving Tito during the battle of Neretva by jumping on a grenade. If true, dog single-handedly prolonged the existence of Yugoslavia by 46 years

We do not deserve dogs. My dog saved my life, and does so everyday. I wish I could give him this award. He has seen wars that are beyond comprehension deep in the soul and mind of a broken human. Yet he stays... I don't deserve him

In a documentary series I watched a few years ago about dogs saving lives, Gander was featured in one of the episodes, though I can't remember if he was mentioned by name or not. Edit - 03/01/2024: It was Pet Heroes S1 EP10 from Wonder.

It could have been him, or it could have been one of many that went out that way. There are many brave canines grabbing a grenade that had just fallen into a crowded foxhole, or any embedded position, taking the grenade away from the men, saving their lives at the cost of the canine's own. It is heartbreaking that any canine perished in the wars, but more so when they perished saving others lives in the process. It is however really heartwarming to know that many of these canine heroes, both tho dies in the line of duty and those who survived the wars, were buried alongside human heroes or given their own burial sites and large headstones to honour them and their service. Like canines serving today who are lost in the line of duty, the funerals held for them is so much more emotional then those of people to me, which could be because they already live such a short life, but to be cut even shorter performing their duty to the end...
