@@David-iv6je well, for me it’s the third/outro solo that is amazing… the whole song is played 1 step lower for all string instruments, but when Gilmour went into the booth to record that last one, the guitar he had was in regular tuning. You can hear him scrambling all over the fret board trying to figure out WTF is going on here. So he goes up and down, bends here, super bend there, till it clicks and he figures it out as he goes that he needs to play 1 step(2frets) lower to be « in key ». And thats the result, one of his finest!

@@rumking1391 Not sure which part you are talking about. My favorite is the 3 part harmony solos, which I think of as "Set pieces" (the second starts at 16:50 here). They also have a fourth guitar echo the first phrase of the theme way up high. very intelligent composition, and something relatively new to DG with this degree of expression. (He was doing it in Shine On, but not as pronounced). I always knew he used DGCFAD (one step down) al tuning so he could play open string chord forms in Dmin instead of Emin. Didn't know if that affected any of his solos. Surely The Man knew he was in D and simply soloed two frets down? For a solo on upper frets it is elementary, and independent of tuning as long as the relative tuning of each string is the same.

I saw this same show 3 days before in Cleveland (Municipal Stadium-World Series of Rock). This song stood out and the whole light show was incredible!

I envy you!! I saw them briefly on the shoulders of a relative 5-7 in their early days - local town hall sort of thing. My first was the wall 1980 earls court (still have original posters framed) As said envy any of you who saw DSOTM, WYWH, A, and before !!! Recently a copy of The Wall Earls Court aopeared on KZfaq.

My elder sister bought this shortly after its release and we both were consumed by it for months!! I still dive back in with this entire album in my phone selection (which is over 2800 songs, BTW). I can understand not listening to this track over and over and over coz it is dark and heavy and emotional but definitely worth about 4 or 5 times a year :-)

I bought it immediately after it was released, (as I did with all Bowie and LZ albums) and to be honest, I found at first to be dark and sinister. After one month, it became my favourite album....and still is today.

This album is better than both of those albums.......combined!

Animals is best known as their most underrated album. ...By pretty much everyone. ... For a truly overlooked gem, I recommend "Obscured By Clouds." Much more...obscure.

Not arguably to me. It is so great - became my fave PF song on its release as a teen. Saw them on their Animals tour. They came out and did the entire album in running order - took a short break and came out to do Wish you were here - start to finish. Encores were a selection from DSOM. Fucking awesome concert - S tier for sure

@@Lechuque I don't know why but that's the way i feel about The Wall. Been listening to Floyd ever since Meddle came out. Definitely Wish You Were Here & Animal's are the two albums I've listened to the most all these years.

Animals is more spare, dark and heavy than WYWH, DSotM or earlier albums. The Wall went even more spare, with less complex orchestration. The "Trial" stuff in The Wall also turns some rock fans off. (I'm OK with it in the context of a rock opera/concept album.) But having figured out and gotten good at all the guitar parts throughout, I consider WYWH to be best in guitar licks with Animals a close second. But there are a few on the Wall and even The Final Cut that are chillingly good guiat parts.

@@David-iv6je Parts of The Wall sounds like a Broadway musical, not my cup of tea. WYWH is my personal favorite, "Animals" is probably number 2 for me...

@@pulsarlights2825 Yes, that's exactly it. I'm not overly fond of them, but I do appreciate their impact in the context of a concept album. Most other concept albums with a strong stoiy also make some compromises that depart from the usual fare. Compared to a loose concept album like, say, Sgt. Pepper's or Ziggy Stardust.

Oops I read wrong. I thought you said Roger Waters’ singing. I’ve been listening to Pink Floyd since 1970. I love every song they put out since then, but I have to admit, I don’t care for Roger Waters at all he almost destroyed Pink Floyd.

I am very tired of people describing well known, highly acclaimed works, artists, etc. as “underrated .”

There are still far too many people trying to elevate themselves for having the quality to appreciate something that they label as “underrated” when, in fact, that thing has long been known, loved and praised by a very large number of people. I’m afraid another remedy is required.

53 here. The company I work for does not randomly test for weed anymore due to covid. I treat myself to Dogs and weed a couple of times a month now.

The irony is that these guys HATED LSD. Pink Floyd was NOT A DRUG BAND. (That being said, I took partake on rare occasion.)

First time I did mescaline, I did "Echoes".

I would have to disagree about Floyd hating LSD. They hated that LSD burned out Sid Barrett’s brain. But I never heard any of them say that they never took hallucinogens. They may not have used LSD to play the music but I’m sure they used it to write it. When you listen to Pink Floyd, on a trip to music goes directly to the right spot in your brain and it’s 100 times better because you understand it on the same level as the people who created it…my opinion 😊

That Tampa show was incredible. I just wish I remembered more of it.

They were a thing among my peers. Kids in my HS did all kinds of drugs and stuff then, crazy they survived to adulthood, lol.

Gilmour and Waters wrote the songs, but Waters did most of the vocals. This is why the lyrics are so dark. Waters was all doom and gloom.

@@georgeclarke8137 Waters wrote the lyrics of course (Gilmour was not good at lyrics). But Waters only sang the last section. That's all Gilmour on vocals before the interlude. This was a Floyd secret weapon: two lead vocalists and even a third if you count sporadic appearances by Wright on lead (famously, the bridge of Time). Waters and Gilmour also split vocal duties on "Comfortably Numb: Waters is the minor key verses, Gilmour the major key (and hence more optimistic) choruses.

Animals is definitely Floyd’s “peak of creativity”. An absolute epic. And wish you were here is right there with it.

Agreed. I bought this CD in high school not knowing in a few months we would be reading Orwell's book. Because of Pink Floyd I was thoroughly engaged.

Dogs were the law enforcement/military - Pigs were the rich/politians - Sheep were citizens.

I saw the Chicago stop at Soldier Field. One of the highlights of my life.

I caught the Tampa show at the big sombrero. Giant inflatable pigs floating over the crowd. Quite the show.

I was there too at the Portland Memorial Coliseum. They played Animals then Wish You Were Here, and as an encode played Money. Without a doubt the best rock concert I ever attended. The sound quality was fantastic and it wasn't extremely loud...perfect actually!

To me Dark Side of the Moon is the quintessence of their work, but Animals is definitively my second favorite and their second most epic IMO.

The Wall was their last great album with Waters, but The Division Bell is the group's last great album overall

Not really underrated. It's part of Floyd's big 4 along with Dark Side, WYWH, and The Wall. To me Obscured by Clouds is vastly underrated
