I start calibrating my left and right front speakers with REW, The Spatial Audio Calibration Toolkit from ‪@joentell‬ and ‪@TechnoDad‬, and Audyssey's MultEQ-X Room Correction Software. I wanted to calibrate a system without using the internal test tones from REW. Luckily, we have a great Blu-ray Disc that archives this with full-range random pink noise, which is perfect for full-range measurements using an RTA in REW. I realized that this video was going to be long, so I think I'll split this up into parts, because I wanted to explain to you how and what I had to go through to lean this and achieve these incredible results.
This is using a new method of importing Target Curves using Audyssey's MultEQ-X. I'd like to shout to ‪@ocaudiophile‬ for giving me the idea that this was possible and I wanted to see if it would work with the new Audyssey MultEQ-X update that allows you to import target curves now.
Please let me know what you think in the comments, and if you have any questions let me know.

Congratulations, great video! Before MultiEQ-x added the functionality to import a target curve, I averaged it in REW and calibrated each speaker and used the average of the positions. The difference was that I used the REW equalizer to make the compensations and used some targets that I downloaded from audio science review (A collection of speaker target responses in .csv/.txt format). It actually opened up many possibilities for me, I'm a beginner in equalization and this helped me to have a sound that was much more controlled and close to what I liked to hear. After equalizing each speaker in REW, I imported the file into MultEQ-x. It's been approximately 2 months since I made some changes to my room, I had to reconfigure everything, I noticed the presence of the option to directly import the target curve. So I did, I imported a Harman curve which was the one I used and in reality it seems to me that I got a good result for the time invested. I want to try some other curves to see how the software equalizes, but at first the time savings in relation to the result seem quite interesting.

Hey, Carl! It makes me happy to see that you're getting so much use out of your Spatial Audio Calibration Toolkit! I see you've discovered something about Audyssey's MultEQ-X: the frequency response measurements taken by Audyssey are not to be trusted. Your measured response is more accurately matching your target response because you've bypassed Audyssey's measurements completely. You may have tried applying the target curve directly to Audyssey's correction, but you'll notice that the post-EQ measurement does not match the target curve. The reason is their initial measurements don't match what you would get with REW and a UMIK-1. Kind of crazy right?

Yeah, that is really interesting, that is crazy. I think the manual work that can be done with Audyssey is incredible, but I think the automatic stuff needs significant work. The 2023 high-end Denon receiver looks amazing, but I think it costs $6k.

@@adamATOM3your Pioneer AVR should have at a minimum a GEQ feature. Try running the RTA with Auto EQ (MCACC) OFF or running full sweeps and then within the REW feature select ‘Custom’ and then put the Q values that correspond to the number of octaves your GEQ allow for (e.g. if your GEQ is limited to 1 octave bands then your Q values are all 1.414…..see below) 2 Octave Bandwidth: Q = .667. 1 Octave Bandwidth: Q = 1.414. 1/2 Octave Bandwidth: Q = 2.871. 1/3 Octave Bandwidth: Q = 4.36. 1/4 Octave Bandwidth: Q = 5.76. 1/8 Octave Bandwidth: Q = 11.54. 1/16 Octave Bandwidth: Q = 23. Then click the “optimize gains” feature in REW and input the gains/levels calculated by REW into your Pioneer’s GEQ. If your Pioneer AVR has a ‘PEQ’ EQ then select ‘Custom’ in the REW EQ feature, input the necessary parameters, and then have REW perform all the work (just input the ‘Calculated’ Q values (opposed to you inputting the ‘Q’ values’) and gains into your AVR’s PEQ)

Very interesting method with good results. I use the 'From File' in REW to measure all speakers in my 9.2.4 set up using external sweep files (Obsessive, Compulsive has these linked). I am also a big advocate of using REW to do the heavy lifting and MQX for application. Also REW/MQX has negated the need for MiniDSP 2x4hd so now removed from the chain. I would advise correcting each speaker individually to said target curve to achieve 100% tonal matching especially for surrounds and overheads. Obviously, proper use of absorbion/diffusion treatment and speaker position in relation to the MLP is fundamental in reducing the amount of EQ required and controlling RT60 decay. If you don't mind me commenting, is there anyway you can reposition your rear speaker or the overhead to achieve greater separation? Oh, and investing in a new vacuum might be a good idea 😂. Love your enthusiasm 👍🏻👍🏻.
@hdmoviesource
@hdmoviesource 11 ай бұрын
Thanks. I have theories as to why averaging the speaker measurements is better because I've tried individual speakers before and they didn't sound as good as averaging and combining the 2. However, when I get time I might try an individual calibration again. I am also considering removing my MiniDSP from the chain, but I need to make sure that I can get the EQ as good as I have now because my subs are set up crazy good right now. In theory with this new method, it shouldn't be an issue. I also use a different method for my subs. I measure to flat and then apply the room curve afterward. I think it gives much better sound than using a target curve for your subs. I can't move my rear speakers and Atmos speakers no. I do agree that separation certainly could be better. I'd also like to use wides, but, yeah, it's having the space in the room to make it work. I may try the "from file" option at some point. I'll get a cleaner, LOL. Thanks for your comment. It's great to meet people that are really interested in this.

What do you think of this way; would this be the same quality as the CD from Joe N Tell? I have done, and i like it very much; but i have no comparsion! Maybe i will try 'your' method with the new sweep files from OCA next week and see (or better hear) what the differences are; what do you think about using the measurements from Audyssey?

I didn't use the sub channel though because there's a negative 3db slope on it, so I used REW for the sub.

I finished running through this setup for my 7.4.4 setup in my room. While my speaker responses are definitely more tightly lined up with the target curve when I SPL align them in REW. But in my actual room the listening levels are alot lower than they were before. Do I need to reset the trims using REW after this? I didn't see that trim reset step in your video. I noticed that your front left CAL is about 72.3 dB and your front right cal is 75.6 dB. What do you do in your Denon AVR to make sure they are playing at the right level after loading the target curves?

I’m just finding my system is lacking some punch especially when I’m listening at -10db
@hdmoviesource
@hdmoviesource 3 ай бұрын
@@cush86-thfc Its hard to say. One thing to think about is that, when the 120hz roll-off is in place using the LPF for LFE, that 120hz boost shouldn't be such an issue. One way to see if your volume levels are correct is. Sweep the right channel in full range. Then set the speaker to small, unplug the right speaker and sweep the channel again. Now you can see the volume of the sub compared to the mains and adjust as needed. You could also overlay your target curve at the same volume.
