Fun Fact, my dad works for Dolby, and frequently visits cinemas for premieres etc. One time, I came with him to this theatre and he gave a tour of the backstage. Now, he had a ID badge, which allowed him to get around. But then, he decided it was a fun idea to go onto the roof (right behind the batman statue). So, we climbed the steps in the tower to reach the top, and we opened the door which wasn't locked from the inside, and went out. He let go of the door, and we went to go look at the backside of batman ;) as the door closed. When we were done, we headed back to the door and it was locked, so he tried to unlock it with his pass, and that didn't work either, so then he had to call his friend to open the door. Was terrifying.

I almost never expect/try to find high quality information on KZfaq, but your videos were exactly what I was looking for. As a film enthusiast who has a pretty decent home theatre setup and who has recently relocated to central London, I wanted to know more about the many cinema options before wasting a good film release on a bad one. You had great videos for all 4 that I had narrowed it down too. Thanks!

Thank you, this is really helpful. The cinema looks fantastic from pictures but you never know what the experience is like until you get there. This video puts me off going because the screen looks really small and the artwork either side is distracting. It's clearly well decorated and comfortable but doesn't look like it's much cop as an actual viewing experience.

Hi Bored_tech, great review of OLS. Your video looked amazing. The OLS EQ has been done from from the (front) Royal circle, so anywhere else in the room won't be as good. I personally prefer Dolby 7.1, and when it is set up correctly and tweaked to perfection, Dolby 7.1 sounds amazing. As far as I can see, Atmos at the most is only 16 channels of audio, sometimes less. The OLS has a set of lovely blue tabs, did you see them? Great Video. Thank you.

Been there many times but nowadays this screen is very small and people go there because it is the most famous 'west end' cinema and assume because they hold premieres there that it must be the best. It's very old now and yes I agree about the acoustics, I remember it sounding boomy.

The old Leicester Square Odeon - I first visited it for "Notting Hill" in 1999, and sat in the stalls. The best place is the royal circle in the balcony. It's also the first cinema where I saw a film projected digitally("Signs" on Texas Instrument projectors back in the 2000s). Yeah, for such a big cinema auditorium - the screen isn't as big as it should be. It has a nice art deco interior. It's probably a little overpriced for what the actual experience is - but it's in the West End - so prices will be high. I suppose it has a sense of history - what with it being used for film premieres. Apparently, the old Odeon Marble Arch was a better big screen cinema(larger screen). I hope they have kept the old Victoria 70 mm film projector.

Does the barrier in front of the royal circle seats impair your vision and restrict your leg space as opposed to a standerd seat in the cinema . I’m trying to find out what seats to get for the new Spider-Man for my birthday and I Haven’t been to this place before

@boredtech

You are right, Odeon West End Dolby Cinema is quite small, only about 180 reclining seats. But it designed so well so it's not a problem. And yes, it's quite often closed for public. I suspect that Dolby might be using it as a screening room for film production companies.

I've been there a couple of times (for Bond, and for Mission Impossible a few days ago), and I think it's now my joint favourite cinema, along with the IMAX. The IMAX has the superior screen, but the seats in the Odeon are soooo comfy! With films pushing 3 hours these days, the huge recliner seats and leg rests are a real benefit. Both times I opted for the centre of row D, because I'd read you needed to chose a seat fairly near the screen to get a good image size. I had been before, but before the refurb.

Great video..well filmed..and my fears about screen size were true..( I saw Terminator 2 there in 70mm) Even then I thought the screen was too small vs screen auditorium size. After the latest refurbishment it could have been enlarged to say 60ft, as they ripped out everything in the multi million pound refurbishment!! Mind you that's the chinese billionaire owner Dalia Wanda who bought the chain who could have sorted.And don't ever go to sit in the rear circle towards the back as you will feel so detached from the entertainment .Cost I know is a factor as several Odeons ( mostly sadly demolished ) were of this design..Doncaster Odeon was this design for example .Looks to me the Empire IMAX is far better..at least you are closer due to twinning of the original single screen as economics forced them into a corner!!

Your review exactly reflects my experience last night at a 70mm screening of Oppenheimer. The screen is too small, the viewing angle is uncomfortable, the acoustics and uneven speaker frequency response combine to be unintelligible and shouty, inducing me listening fatigue, and ultimately diminishing the quality of the experience. Seats are comfortable, and the Art deco style is fantastic, but not an "ultimate" experience by ant stretch of the imagination. A £10k (new, retail, including a 75" TV) home theatre will give a significantly better experience.

It's an old cinema, and Odeon's prestige one, but sadly it's too old fashioned to accommodate what's needed. For the size of the building and cinema, the screen needs to be much bigger. There's probably restrictions on what they can alter, but I think Odeon needs to think about changing their Premiere venue. It's just getting by on history. Incidentally Oppenheimer had it's UK Premiere on the very same screen you watched it on. That's just embarrassing, especially for guests watching further back. Especially when they could have shown it in IMAX 70mm and not just 70mm, at the BFI IMAX.

The Odeon Leicester Square is a bit of a compromise. It’s the last original 1930s single screen Odeon and they have tried to bring it up to date while preserving its heritage. Screen size is going to be a problem in such a big auditorium as if they put a much bigger screen in (if possible) then most of the front rows would be unusable as is the case at the Empire IMAX across the street. As it is the screen does appear a bit small especially from the rear circle. Simple solution if you want a big screen experience sit towards the front if not sit towards the back. It’s worth mentioning that the Odeon Leicester Square screen is not small it’s just a huge auditorium.

So you are saying that there are no ATMOS speakers over the recliners that are closer to the screen? What a joke. We have been in the upper section, and the screen was like watching a movie on your smartphone. I thought about buying seats in the 4th row from the screen next time. However, if there are no ATMOS speakers there it defeats the whole point of a Dolby Cinema for me. I would rather go to an IMAX.
@newcamnoddy
@newcamnoddy Жыл бұрын
How true..the very large and long circle area is basically to ensure maximum number of seats..it was a design 70 years ago and if course now rents are so expensive..hence in the late 90's they built the smaller screens in an unused passageway to ensure more income.. it's a business after all .

@@newcamnoddy yes, exactly. However, as I already found out, the cinema across the street is just awesome. Dolby Cinema Odeon Cinema West End. You didn't spend enough time to have noticed the subway train noise below it. I wouldn't be surprised if its heard at odeon west end, not that I care as I wouldn't be seen anywhere near an odeon cinema ever again. too expensive. lousy acoustics. rubbish sound system that plays at Deafening levels at odeon bh2 bournemouth isense and atmos, overhead surrounds is rubbish sounding. I had to always wear earplugs and that is sign of a rubbish sound system. cinema has gotten far too loud, Deafening in past 32 years when I worked as projectionist for UCI 1989 and finally warner bros 1998. odeon have this Deafening sound policy. the bass is rubbish from the stage channels where any body punches (foley) sound is lacking and missing I only hear it I can't feel it like some of the past great THX cinemas like, 1989 CIC Empire Leicester Square or CIC High Wycombe. Those JBL THX no longer exist and even if they still did would leave that odeon luxe and bh2 in the dust.
@boredtech
@boredtech 2 жыл бұрын
I agree it's loud, but I wouldn't call that sound system rubbish. Auditorium itself needed better acoustic treatment. West End Dolby Cinema is located at the far end of the Leicester Square, Northern line is running under the Charing Cross Road and Piccadilly Line under the Cranbourn Street. I doubt that you will ever hear the trains. So there's no THX Cinemas in London anymore?
