Just saw it in IMAX last night and it was overwhelming visually and audibly in the best way possible! I had a hard time deciding beforehand whether to go IMAX or Dolby but you've taught well Shane so I made the right decision! For a movie like Dune... the IMAX ratio puts you literally in the desert, on the sandworms, and in the fight scenes! That was my reason for choosing IMAX and watching this video just gave me further confirmation! 😎

I saw both DOLBY and IMAX and at least for me, the DOLBY wins hands down. The DOLBY picture was much brighter, especially in that opening sequence where they fly up the mountain. The sound is also much better with seat rumbling throughout. The guns are just so much more punchy in DOLBY as well. The IMAX was also good but darker and we had the same problem where I can see the actual screen is already a bit old so much that I could notice it through out. All in all I wish I would’ve seen it all over again in DOLBY. It’s just a much better experience for me overall. Screen brightness, deep blacks, and way better sound. I went to the AMC in Deerbrook. the lack of bass in your dolby screening was definitely down to the cinema. I saw it in London at the Dolby screen in Odeon West end, and then at the Imax Laser in the Empire, and the Dolby screen had better bass and overall sound than the Imax. Dolby also had a much brighter, vivid and more evenly lit screen, whereas the Imax laser had quite a bit of vignetting to it and more muted

Hurrah the Brits! I rewatched Part 1 on Dolby at Odeon West End then Part 2 a day later at BFI. To me Dolby wins (!) for both audio and video quality but BFI did better than I’d ever experienced before with sound; I’d always felt it was ever so slightly on the quiet side of ‘acceptable’… but it is a HUGE space to fill, in fairness. EDIT: Rows D and E are ideal in West End; I usually default to the back of a cinema but _that_ screen isn’t big enough for that. Centre middle is magical.

I absolutely love how you compared IMAX to Dolby Cinema for a film. If you keep doing this, I can get behind this as which theater to put my money down on. Recently, I've been discouraged to keep going to Dolby because it just doesn't have that deep DEEP bass with all of those speakers surrounding me vs. going to IMAX & getting that deep DEEP bass that I hunger for. My theater has both IMAX & Dolby (AMC) & I have a membership as well. I love this comparison video like no other. I already shared this video to my 8 buddies & 7 already got back to me about digging on the comparison aspects. Keep up the amazing work, My Man.

I saw it three times this weekend, in LieMAX and Dolby at the AMC in Danbury, and a standard projection at an indie theater - Dolby is 100% the way to go. The seating comfort, color depth, and contrast are just so superior to the other versions it's not much of a comparison. The standard projection was actually kind of hard to enjoy due to how washed out it looks in comparison, like going from a 4K OLED screen to a 1080p screen from 2005. And the crappy seats in the fake iMAX theater gave my wife pretty bad back pain after sitting in one for three hours. Bonus tip: Skip the soda, it's a long movie!

I went for Dolby Cinema. I was tempted by the IMAX, but our local theater is just 1.9. It's interesting to see that it was cut with more horizontal information in Dolby Cinema, which seems to go against the whole value proposition of sub-1.43 IMAX screens. I know IMAX enthusiasts are tired of the LieMAX moniker, but it's stuff like that which really does water down their brand and make it less appealing to consumers like me. For me, the seat actuators in Dolby Cinema made a huge difference. I absolutely enjoyed feeling the rumble at key points throughout the movie.

I'm 48 years old 6'6" with old basketball knees. I saw Oppenheimer in IMAX 70mm. What an amazing experience, but boy was I uncomfortable. Not being able to stretch my legs during that long movie was torture. I had to stand up a few times which was awkward. This is the main reason I'm hesitant to see Dune 2 in IMAX 70mm. I just don't think the difference is worth the pain. I've already seen it twice in Dolby Cinemas and taking my son to see it today. Heated reclining seats for the win!

I saw it last night in 70mm at IMAX Vaughan in Canada. The thing that stood out most was the square image...an unusual aspect from what we are used to. But I started to realize just how much information we will lose if the borders are cut down (faces, scenes, everything). Where the immersion comes from is the screen filling the view with the height of the image making you feel more there vs widescreen. As for the chairs...ours were quite comfortable, but I do have bad memories of them too from the old Cinesphere. So for me... If I'm doing IMAX, it's 70 otherwise AVX (our version of your Dolby).

I saw it in Dolby Cinema and the Ornithopter scene you were talking about definitely had various levels of placement in the room. Some were place at ear level and then some were placed up a little higher and then a few sounded like they were running along the ceiling. They had very specific placements and moved through the space perfectly coordinating with what was shown on the screen. My issue with the theater I saw it in (AMC Alderwood Mall in Lynwood Washington) the rotors in the seats did not vibrate like they normally do. Normally, the rotors vibrate at the frequency the subs emit so the volume can be loud but not absolutely deafening while the rotors send the vibrations through your seat so you literally feel the subsonic frequencies in your body as if the subs are dangerously loud. This was the case when I saw Dune Part 1 at the same theater just over a year prior. (I’ve seen a good handful of movies there). I have a new Dolby Cinema much closer to me In Vancouver Washington (I live in Portland, OR) that I will be seeing it again there to compare, and then hopefully I’ll get to an IMAX theater before the movie leaves. I’ll own it on UHD disc and watch on my 7.1.2 system eventually.

Yeah. AMC Lincoln Square 13 is My #1 Go-To Movie Theater. Both its IMAX and Dolby Cinema auditoriums are unmatched here in the city. And since IMAX has been practically SOLD OUT (I'm definitely not sitting in those first few front rows) for every screening of "DUNE 2", I had to settled for Dolby Cinema yesterday. My only complaint was that Dialogue was a bit indistinguishable at times during the film's louder sequences. But Sound and Visual (wise), still stunning. I tend to do Balcony Seating at the Dolby Cinema theater. Electric Seats are totally comfortable. And the Viewing Angles are great. I'm surprised that Balcony didn't break apart during some sequences. 😁😁😁 There was a time in which getting seats at that AMC IMAX Theater wasn't an issue. Now thanks to Nolan and Villeneuve and Cameron), EVERY BODY and their dog is going now. Theater Chains really need to start building/renovating more "Premium" types of theaters to handle the increased patronage. My family, friends, and Co-Workers give Me a hard time and call Me "BOUGIE", when I tell them that unless at film's in IMAX and/or Dolby Cinema, I just stay home and wait for Streaming/Physical. Hey Shane. Thank you for the really great review. I've got to say I am pretty sure the issue you had with the lack of bass at your dobly theater was just an issue with your theater. Because the base you described for the Imax laser is exactly what I felt at my dolby theater. My IMAX laser experience was really good as well but the sound just felt less immersive compared to my dobly experience. Regarding the screens there was a scene that the lazer projector for the IMAX viewing just didn't have the contrast needed for the scene transition that I didn't experience with dolby. Otherwise I have to agree there wasn't much in it for the viewing experience. At least in my area the way to experience this movie is in dolby all the way.

I've experimented over the past few years and its Dolby all the way for me, I'm going tonight! Dune 1, Oppenheimer, Tenet, Top Gun, they were ALL way better in the Dolby. IMO the IMAX height/aspect ratio is a gimmick, I just love cinemascope, the old-timers had it figured out, how our eyes/brains work. As for the bass, I also feel this is overdone in the IMAX theaters I've tried (which is more than few!), I greatly prefer the more balanced and refined (yet still powerful) Dolby Atmos. The chair sub-woofers, dayum!!!! It's possible I'm lucky with a really good Dolby Cinema room just two miles from my house, I love it. Thanks for the vid!

@therealshanelee ... In the KC area, the Barrywoods AMC Theatre has IMAX Laser, and they renovated the auditorium to include reclining seats (similar to the Dolby cinema), and includes IMAX's height channels as well (that's where I'm going tonight). The side lights problem was still there. So there are some IMAX Laser auditoriums that are made for comfort. That said, a friend here went to a Dolby Theatre for Dune Part Two in the same area, and he said he did not see the image cropped to the "scope" aspect ratio; And I also know all three Dolby Cinema theatres in the area do the "16X9" image too (someone else claimed otherwise). So some Dolby Cinemas do vary. However, my fave of those three Dolby theatres would be the one by their HQ in Leawood, KS; I feel like that screen is somewhat more immersive.

WOW, it's nice to see that theater again. I live in Brooklyn, and in September of 2020, I took the Metro-North to that Cinemark IMAX to see TENET. Was the first film I'd seen in 6 months due to the pandemic. Staff were very friendly, theater had a nice 1.90 to 1 IMAX Laser presentation. Governor Cuomo didn't re-open NYC theaters until March of 2021. I finally got to see TENET in true 15 perf IMAX 70mm at AMC LINCOLN SQ. in Manhattan a week later. In fact, I just saw it again there on Thursday back to back with DUNE PART TWO. If you can, make the trip to NYC to see this presentation. I have some story issues with DUNE PART TWO, but that's another story. It's a visceral experience seeing it on that screen. The added height makes a difference since much of the film is 1:43 to 1. I've seen it three times already at Lincoln Square and noticed something new every time. Thanks again for showing that IMAX in Milford. I think about that theater quite often. Was a nice adventure making my way out there and seeing a movie for the first time during such a difficult time. P.S. By law, they can't dim or turn off those EXIT signs. Even DOLBY tried once, but were denied. P.P.S. Many AMC theaters broke the release date of February 29 for those popcorn buckets. I got mine about 3 weeks ago when I saw another film.

I've only been to 4 Dolby locations and they have all been pretty comparable. But IMAX theaters can vary massively as far as screen size, seating, and sound quality. I've been in a couple of "IMAX" theaters which were barely any different than standard theaters. The one closest to me is a huge screen, but really cramped, uncomfortable seats. I saw it there yesterday and it was amazing...I wouldn't hesitate to recommend despite the awful seats. Looking forward to checking it out in Dolby later this week.

That's what bugs me about IMAX, you can't just apply what you hear online to your local theater without trying it out yourself. They're supposed to have tight control of standards, but it feels like their standards are inherently very flexible to account for different ages and sizes of theaters. Dolby Cinema not only feels more standard in practice, but I think its benefits are less dependent on having really special theaters, since their audio and visual technology are scalable and support standard cinema aspect ratios.

There is nothing wrong with the Dolby Atmos subwoofers. With any speaker/headphones/earbuds they have a range of sound that they can play. However within that wide range, they have an optimal range that is a bit narrower and sounds really good in that range. Anything outside that range is generally referred to as the cutoff, or drop-off, where it will struggle to produce those sounds, even though they are still able to. Basically the IMAX has subwoofers that have the optimal range in the lowest range possible. That is where that "extra bass" is coming from. And yes, it feels like your seat is going to come unbolted from the floor. It's awesome!

Just watched the movie at the Lincoln Square IMAX and found specs of dust landing on the projector lens throughout the movie kind of distracting. I've never found dust to be an issue, and am not sure if that's a risk watching something at this large of a screen. Overall, the experience was bad when you're watching a close up scene and a squiggly line randomly appearing on their face.

Per IMDb, these are the specs: Aspect ratio: 1.43 : 1(IMAX GT Laser & IMAX 70MM), 1.90 : 1(IMAX Digital & non-GT Laser), 2.20 : 1(70 mm prints), 2.39 : 1(non-IMAX theatrical ratio) Camera: Arri Alexa 65 IMAX, IronGlass VLFV MKII Dune & Moviecam Lenses and Arri Alexa Mini LF IMAX, IronGlass VLFV MKII Dune & Moviecam Lenses Cinematographic Process: ARRIRAW(6.5K, 4.5K, source format), Digital Intermediate(4K, master format), Dolby Vision Printed Film Format: 70 mm(horizontal, Kodak Vision 2383), DCP Digital Cinema Package So, it was filmed digitally at 4.5K - 6.5K (dep. on vertical height). For digital transfers that would be a 4K presentation (or less). For 70 mm transfers, that would be a ~4K - 6K presentation. These are less than for movies shot with 70 mm IMAX film cameras, which result in ~12K presentations. Oppenheimer was filmed that way, for example. Anyway, I saw Dune Part Two twice in 70 mm at the Irvine Spectrum. Not quite as sharp as Oppenheimer was, but terrific nonetheless. The sound was fantastic, including bass so low that you could only feel it in your gut. The seats are very good there. The only little complaint I have is that I could hear the projector both times. That wasn't the case for Oppenheimer, and I'm not sure why.

Saw it at the SF Metreon in 70mm IMAX, then a dolby cinema theater the next day. Gotta say, the picture and audio quality was top notch in Dolby, but I couldn't figure out if the seat should be reclined or not, it was just uncomfortable to me. The IMAX was just awe-inspiring. Dimmer, yeah. Audio was a muddier and more bassy, but the scale was spectacular and stunning, and that 1.4 just sucks you in. I think the 70mm will remain my top choice since it's just a short train ride away.

I caught the Dolby version in @ AMC Madison Yards in ATL, and the BASE response was absolutely there! The seats shook like what you were saying you experienced in IMAX, so no complaints sound wise. I was expecting the Dolby Vision screen to give me more top/bottom aspect ratio, so I guess I was a bit disappointed as I’ve seen Dolby Cinema fill that screen with some other movies! Denis had a pre-movie opening statement where he talked about his and Creig Fraser’s preference for Dolby Vision & Atmos. Now the HUGE AMC IMAX I caught DUNE at was in Morrow, Ga! The picture was AWESOME, but sound wise🎉, a bit too loud and not as immersive enough like the Dolby!

Hi Shane, I'm enjoying this discussion. According to what I have read "Dune 2" was shot in "Digital IMAX" - Camera: Arri Alexa 65 IMAX, Moviecam LensesArri Alexa Mini LF IMAX, Moviecam Lenses. The IMAX version you saw was onl 6 Channel IMAX sound not 12. Going back to the size of the screen. It's not the size that is important, it is the ratio. Take "Barbie", this movie was in 2.0:1 as was "Jurassic World Dominion" and many more movies, even including the latest Woody Allen movies. A lot of directors are going for 2.00:1 these days. Dolby say 64 channels of audio. Quote "A typical surround sound system consists of left, center, and right discrete channels with the speakers behind the screen. The surround channels are handled by wall-mounted arrays of speakers, divided acoustically into two or four zones. All speakers within a zone receive the same audio information. In a Dolby Atmos theater, every speaker - as many as 64 total - is powered independently and gets its own separate audio feed. In effect, each speaker is its own zone. In addition to the overhead speakers, Dolby Atmos typically adds more surround speakers and screen speakers." End of quote. But no studio has the money to spend lots of time in a studio to fine tune audio placement in the surrounds. Whereas Dolby 7.1 is more natural and better sounding for me. I love Dolby 7.1. The Atmos version is taken off the 7.1 audio track. Out of interest "Dune 2" in Digital IMAX is only 6 channels. Love your channel and have subscribed. Keep up the good work.

For the past year and a half I had been living in Los Angeles and was so unbelievably blessed by the range of screens I had the opportunity to pick from. I got to see Oppenheimer in the 70mm 1.43:1 version at Regal Irvine Spectrum. Saw Killers of the Flower Moon at The TCL Chinese Theatre in theatre 7 (the main auditorium). There's also so many lovely independent theatres such as The Frida which is a bit of a drive but so worth it. BUT... I had to move back home to Miami, FL and omg I'm so sad... Every theatre here just sucks man... Every screen is dirty as hell, something is always fucked with the projectors or the sound. When I watched Dune Part 1 in Imax at the AMC in South Beach, there was this purple hue the entire film overlayed on the upper half of the screen. At first I thought it was part of the movie, but I quickly realised it wasn't because Timothée Chalemet's forehead is definitely not slightly purple. One Imax theatre had fucking flies chilling on the window the projector screens out of. You could see them moving around every now and then. Sometimes they would just sit there for long periods at a time. People here are also so inconsiderate and annoying. There's always someone on the phone or there are people who love to talk loudly during a movie. Like during my viewing of Dune Part 2, this dude sitting 2 seats to my left decided he wanted to commentate the entire movie out loud. When the worms would show up, he would say something like "Oh shit, the worms.. HAHA!!" and then pull out his phone for a minute. God I hate Florida so much. I have yet to find a truly great theatre here to watch movies on a scale films like Dune and Oppenheimer demand. I miss LA :'(

As for sound, both were really satisfying. 8:21 really interesting, I was wondering that ... looks like they're kinda cheating for the imax ratio. I remember seeing Dune 1 in both Dolby and Imax and I prefered Dolby because 3D was really good and the imax was worst since the projector had 4 or 5 faulty pixels.

To be honest, I don’t really notice a difference between 7.1 THX and Dolby atmos cinemas sound. But I do prefer the older seats and screen at my favorite cinema. The new cinemas in Sweden has screens with a glossy coating that make some scenes look weird. Like there is a oily layer ob the screen. Never would’ve thought this, but I actually prefer Dolby cinema over imax. The seats are REALLY comfortable and we had enough space to eat dinner, fully recline and people STILL had enough space to walk past us, the seats have buttkickers in them so they vibrate when something happens on screen such as an explosion, you have Dolby tuned sound which sounds better than imax imo, and the screen quality was better, and somehow it being smaller made the experience better. I’ve always thought imax THE premium movie experience, but they definitely have some competition with Dolby. Dolby Cinema: Like watching a movie in a very cozy, warm, very feature packed home built cinema.(A Home cinema on steroids) IMAX: is like your typical local movie theater, but the theater started taking steroids(Local movie theater on steroids) Dolby is quality over quantity(easier to make smaller theater sound good and be more comfortable) IMAX goes for quantity over quality(everything is VERY BIG, they want to wow people with that) If you’re a movie enthusiast that want the VERY best movie quality, you’ll DEFINITELY prefer Dolby cinema. If you’re a casual who doesn’t care so much about everything being perfectly tuned(sound, screen, luxury seats etc.) and you just want to wow the family with the large scale of the theater, then IMAX is for you. *Both theaters are premium. Dolby is just THE most premium.
