Dollar Tree has some shockingly good stuff. They have shelf-stable milk for crying out loud, and it's sold by the quart. That works out to a tad bit more expensive than buying by the half-gallon at most traditional stores, but as someone who uses so little milk that much of it goes bad (and when it does, I obviously don't have backup jugs because why would I stock up on perishables like that?) it's a game-changer. I can stock up and it will keep as long as it's sealed. Then, once it's opened, I only have to use up a quart before it spoils rather than a half-gallon AND if it does go bad in spite of that, I can keep spares on hand so I'm not running to the store in the middle of making dinner. It's really remarkable and while I'm not normally a "visit all the stores to get the best price on every single item" type, that's my exception. I make a special trip to Dollar Tree just for milk.

I worked at Family Dollar in high school, what a horrible company to work for. It’s insane how they make money with the condition of their stores and inventory along with the way they treat employees. I was on a team that fixed up and inventories stores. I remember we went in and did inventory at a store when a new Store Manager took over (standard procedure when a new manager takes over). The previous manager had been there not even 6 months and the store was missing $80k worth of merchandise. I heard rumors they fired the manager cause he was opening the loading dock at night and had a crew come steal out of the back room, but I don’t know if it was true

@@charlockprime At least around here, DG's fill the niche of being too far from a Kroger/Ralph's/Meijer/Target/Walmart/etc in the suburbs and inner city. They are at least half food, prices may sometimes run high but the product selection is decent for such small, close-to-home stores. Also I randomly found a copy of a super random and obscure 360 game there once for like a fifth the online ask for even a used copy.

I'll always love Dollar Tree. When I was younger, my grandparents would take my brother and I there and give us $3 each to spend, and we could take as long as we wanted at the store. It was like a fun game and I'd always look forward to it when I went to visit.

When I moved out of my parents' house I had literally only $60 to my name and I took that money to dollar tree to buy the essentials I needed to take care of myself until I had money to buy more. I got all of the essentials for hygiene out of the way with a minimal amount of money, as well as my own little set of dishes, and I was amazed by the surprisingly good quality dishes I could get there. To this day a lot of my belongings are from dollar tree, especially my cleaning supplies, because there's really no use in paying a ton of money for those things when you can get them so much cheaper at a dollar tree and they work just the same. I am a little upset that they upped their prices to $1.25 but that's not going to stop me from going on a shameless shopping spree at the dollar tree. It will forever be my favorite place to shop.

I didn’t realize how pricey Dollar General had gotten until I went and bought a few Christmas things this year! A lot of it was $10+ I bought a TOTE(which you’d think would be pretty cheap there) for $13 and that was the cheapest of the 5 they had, one was nearly $20 😢 I love Dollar General but they’re getting to expensive for me to the point that I’d rather drive the extra 20 minutes to just go to Walmart and pay an extra dollar or two 😅

As mentioned below, all previously one dollar items at Dollar Tree are now $1.25. I have also noticed some "shrink-flation" in products, ie: a package that used to be 16oz is now 12oz, but still in the same size package. (They hope you won't notice. Sneaky...) But for certain items, like soaps, pretzels, kitchen wares, light bulbs, etc, DT carries brands which I like that aren't even available elsewhere (except Amazon) and are still better priced at $1.25 than at competitors. Dollar Tree is the only one I use anymore, as i find their stock is more reliable, and the shops are cleaner and better organized. When Family Dollar started offering items at $5 a few years ago, I was done with them...

I worked an assistant store manager position in a Dollar Tree once upon a time. It was without a doubt, one of the worst jobs I've ever had. On day one of my onboarding, I was walked around the store, there was stock in the stockroom up to the ceiling. The way to the break room was nearly completely blocked off with boxes, and the break room fridge was absolutely disgusting lol. Also, when I started, it turns out most of the time there is one manager and one to two cashiers per shift for the entire store. Everything was rushed and sloppy, the truck drivers that bring the stock were never on time. Half the time they just shoved stock down the rollers and shit would end up broken or spilled. Oh and to top it off, apparently shortly before I arrived the store was fined for having a rat problem. I will NEVER work for Dollar Tree again 😂

I had a dollar tree right across the street from my high school so I would go there almost everyday after school to get cheap food to bring home when we were struggling. This was in NYC so clearly their target audience is very different than the other 2. I saw one dollar general in my area but multiple dollar trees. Back then it was still everything for a dollar so we could walk in with 50 bucks and get like 50 items of food since most of it was tax exempt. It will forever hold a special place in my heart since it got us through tough times.

Dollar General cornered the market when they started putting stores in literally ever single county in America. (Even small counties sometimes have multiple DGs.) I've worked for DG for about 3 years now. It's OK I guess, but I've worked at 4 different locations but have never been able to move up, as the people that move up are older (sometimes much older) and DG will bring in people from outside your district or other stores to put in higher positions, which I think is just plain wrong and should be illegal. I think the people working for you should be the first in line for promotions. (based on experience of course)

If you buy electronics or god forbid, frozen foods, you get what you pay for.

@HowardDPVT
@HowardDPVT 2 жыл бұрын
@@Zoomii5 I, perhaps, have some insight as to why you may feel that way. At the very least my local Dollar General and Family Dollar are on the same road about 0.75-1.25 miles. that is to say, they are very close to each other. One thing that I noticed is that the Dollar General is almost entirely made of solid, dark brown brick; with about 0.667-0.5 of the total surface area of the front being brick. On the other hand Family Dollar is lighter in color, and perhaps less brick and more windows at the front of the store, but otherwise much the same. both are less than 5 years old and they already have a "run-down" feel and appearance. I assume that Dollar Tree is better at feeling brighter and less closed-off and has a better maintenance routine, but those are just assumptions as I have not even seen a Dollar Tree around where I live for some time. Those are my thoughts on that. Hope it may give you some insight.

Back in the mid to late 1950's $1 was about an hour's pay. So I am thinking that Dollar General and Family Dollar were not viewed as inexpensive places to shop as they are now.
@turntsnaco824
@turntsnaco824 2 жыл бұрын
An hour's pay for who though, a cashier? A butcher? An accountant? A lawyer? I mean, if they've adjusted their prices more or less to account for inflation, and I would wager that the majority of their items are currently between $5 and $15 from my own experience, with anything much over that being considered pretty expensive for them - and as stores go that's still entirely on the very low end of the spectrum, barring literal one-dollar stores. But an average "low wage" today is between $10 and $15, which still matches up with their median prices. So if they are still considered a relatively inexpensive store today, surely they were still on the cheaper end of the spectrum back then, unless you are telling me that a $1 an hour wage was very respectable. That being said, I know that wages have increased over the years relative to inflation, but not necessarily taking increased costs of living into account, which is one of the reasons lower-wage employees really struggle in the modern world, because inflation-adjusted pay literally isn't enough, it simply costs more per dollar to survive than it used to, and not just because the value of the dollar has changed. So that being said, you are probably right that they were not seen as the cheapest of the cheapest stores, probably more like a Walmart where there is a bit more of a balance between cost and quality, rather than taking literally the cheapest things you can get. I know there used to be Nickel and Dime stores, and if those were viable, then these dollar stores certainly had to be a step up from that. Either way, very interesting point and observation.

I lived in West Virginia for a couple of years, and you are dead on with Dollar General's strategy. I lived in Charleston, and the Family Dollars and Dollar Trees well outnumbered Dollar Generals. But, once you started driving on the back roads through these small, economically depressed towns (that WV is known for) Dollar General was the only department-style store and sometimes the only retailer bedside gas stations in these places. They were even building brand new locations in these towns that most of American industry has written off as unprofitable to operate in.

I used to work as a night manager at a Dollar General, I completely suspect they keep their prices low by understaffing their stores. People complain that the shelves are always understocked at dollar general? Thats because at least the one I worked at there would only be one person there at night. I would be expected to get at least 5 rolltainers of product stocked out of the back room while handling customers at the register. Naturally, night shift almost never met that 5 rolltainer quota. Because of course running the register takes priority. The only days the quota was met were the 2 days a week the store manager was required to work night shift, those days were always properly staffed for >some< reason. Oh and as an aside during the first covid outbreak I was ordered by my doctor to quarantine. Signed notice from the doctor and everything. I was told that if I didn't come in to work anyway I'd be fired. Tried to fight my unemployment application too by saying I quit without notice, found out later during my job searching that I'm apparently blacklisted from working at a whole network of Dollar General affiliated stores now too because at least two brought up that I quit DG without notice, and the only place claiming that is DG themselves. So there's that to chew on as well.

When someone quits, they try to spread the quitter's work duties between the employees for no extra pay. They are testing how little staff they can get away with. I've worked all my life and taken even overtime shift to be poor. I could have slacked off and still be poor. I've wasted my life.
