I love the sponge idea. I’m going to plant strawberries and a lot if people say they dry out too fast. I’m going to try this!!!

I will be on my second year with my dollar tree stackers. I grew strawberries last year and they did very well. I used soil moist pellets mixed into my potting mix and it did help to retain moisture compared to the those without the pellets. I think I will try the sponge idea and compare them with pellets. Thanks for the idea. Love my stackers.

Good to know! I'm hopeful the sponges will work similarly!

This might not be a good idea because the sponges might grow mold

My tower is hanging in there too...a few chips from the weed whacker, but it's still doing a great job holding a Shasta Daisy and some Nasturtium plants. :) LOVE that crabapple tree! 😍 Have you got another variety of apple? Crabapples make good pollinators. We got a golden delicious and a honeycrisp to pollinate each other. I brought them home & pruned the top half off. Then I shaved a little of the bark off the bottom of the top pieces and stuck them in rooting hormone and planted them back into pots of soil. Now have two of each budding out nicely! I've been watching David the Good and learning how to keep regular fruit trees small and manageable.

I think we have another crabapple tree in the yard too. It has white blooms! I’d love to explore getting some real apple trees in the next couple years.

If you're going to use sponges make sure you put them at the bottom.

I might try mine in a shady spot and see how it goes. Hadn’t seen the sponge idea. I put a cheapo plastic saucer INSIDE the bottom of hanging baskets. So it will catch a bit of water. Wonder if that would work to put one in the middle of the stackables too.

That’s a good idea! I bought some of those coco liner baskets, so I might have to try that!

How are the sponges working for you 3 weeks later. I have (2) 10 high planters that have given me nothing but problems with how quickly they dry out even with the rain storms. Going to have to move them to a shaded area and just the thought of that is depressing. Back issues here. I am subscribed and giving you all thumbs up since you are one of the few who tell it with the good and the bad and the what the heck. Lol. Also going to reduce a tiny bit of soil so i have room for a top layer of mulch to also hopefully hold moisture. Hoping something works with these stackables.

I don't know if it's the sponges or the shade, honestly, but this has been ROCKING it this year! The flowers I put in it look amazing right now. I will say that it has definitely not lost as much water when I do water it, so I think the sponges are at least helping retain water.

I'm considering buying these on DT but you have to buy 36 for $45. I'm not sure of the planting area but I would love to go vertical. I would love anyone's opinion on these!! Thank you!!

You can sell the excess easily, take them to a farmer's market and trade them for veg.

Store them for when others crack or break. Use it to grow more food.
