Dolly wrote this song from personal experience, so this is how it was envisioned.

This song was written for Porter Wagoner, an early singing partner and the man who put her on the national stage. She wrote this song and sang it to him when she decided to move on and go solo. It was basically how she said goodbye to him as a singing partner.

Dolly won an award from Soul Train in the early 1990's for the Rhythm and Blues song of the year. Whitney presented that award to Dolly and thanked her for writing "such a beautiful song." I remember when I first heard Whitney's cover. I was happy that she didn't over sing it, but did an elegant version that began quietly and built from there on. Dolly took the song to number one twice before Whitney recorded her cover version, once in 1974 and then in 1983 when Dolly performed a new version that was used in her movie, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. That achievement was printed in Guinness Book of World Records, where it was noted that Dolly was the first person to take a song to number one in two different recordings. Counting Whitney's cover that went to number one in the 1990's, that makes the song one that hit #1 in three decades in a row! It must be about time for someone to record it and see if it goes to the top once more. Maybe Dolly's goddaughter, Miley Cyrus should give it a try.

You need to see the live version of Dolly singing this for the first time on the Porter Wagoner show. Shes wearing a red dress. It is BY FAR the best and PUREST version of the song period.

Dolly Parton was asked is she was bothered by the fact that Whitney Houston made the song so big. She said that when she recorded the song she had a bank account and the after Whitney recorded it she owned the bank...

Yeah, I'm old enough to have heard this version way before I heard Whitney sing it, let alone Angelina. Interestingly enough, both Dolly and Whitney sang their versions while starring in movies (The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, The Bodyguard).
