In honor of Free Game Friday the NFL presents the Dolphins Monday Night upset of the Bears!
00:00 - Start
20:21 Fuller 1-yard TD
27:15 Reveiz 47-yard Field Goal
39:42 Davenport 1-yard TD Run
52:16 Butler 30-yard Field Goal
1:00:51 Davenport 1-yard TD Run
1:06:44 Marino 6-yard TD Pass
1:26:35 Fuller 1-yard TD Run
1:29:48 Marino 42-yard TD Pass
1:36:00 Fuller 19-yard TD Pass
The 1985 Chicago Bears were cruising through the regular season and looked as if they could join the '72 Dolphins as the only two undefeated teams in NFL history. But in their week 13 matchup against the Dolphins, the Bears fell prey to Dan Marino and his superb passing attack. The Dolphins took the driver's seat early and never looked back, winning 38-24.

1985 Bears still better than 1972 Dolphins. Dolphins only faced two teams with a winning record during the regular season and barely won their playoff games by a meager 5 point differential. Bears destroyed all their playoff opponents. Bears were far more dominant. '72 Dolphins are one of the most overrated teams in NFL history.

I was at this game live, the Orange Bowl literally was rocking back and forth that night. Sat and soaked it all in one last time just looking at all the games and history that was made there.

1985 was a great NFL season. Somehow, it's a travesty that Marino never got a ring. He's right up there with Tarkenton, Kelly, Fouts and many, many more that never won a championship. Dare I say that Marino is the greatest of all non championship quarterbacks and even is easily among the greatest of all.

@@frandavis1990 Probably better than the vast majority of QBs who have won Super Bowls too. I never really bought into the ring argument when evaluating players anyway. They matter but aren't the be-all-end-all. When it's someone like Marino, gotta ask the question, did the Dolphins not win any SBs in spite of him or because of him? He never really had a running game to compliment him and every year, while the Killer B's were pretty good, they always ran into a team with a better defense, a better running game or both. His team was always outgunned in some way. I'd put Marino up there with the likes of Brady and Montana, no doubt about it.

37:57.....illustrates exactly what you're talking about. Tony Nathan took such a vicious initial hit by Mike Singletary, then another assisted hit by Wilbur Marshall to stop an apparent touchdown, that Marino had to come over to check to see if he was alright. At 38:17, you can see Nathan trying to shake off the approaching symptoms of being concussed...Singletary literally leveled him.

Watching this game, the Bears would have clobbered Marino in the Super Bowl. 1. They sacked Marino three times in the first half, and he was on the run most of it. His quick release, and a third receiver, saved him. 2. The only flaw the Bears had all game was third and long. Dolphins running was meh, their short game was nonexistent, and they were very opportunistic. 3. By the second half, the Bears caused two turnovers in five minutes. Dolphins deserved this win, no questions asked, but this was a one time deal. Bears had a terrible backup QB who started during an unprecedented 107-3 streak in three games, and not only did he throw zero TDs in those games, but Ditka didn’t let him throw past five yards once they hit the opponent’s 30. Put McMahon in there and Bears win that game

@Douglas Francis there's always one idiot to say something dumb or in this case, a few... you act like the man played with a great defense or a great running back... in a run first league, their offense was a straight passing attack and they had maybe one or two thousand yard rushers his whole career. The defense had a few pro bowlers late in his career, but by that time after dealing with the bills dynasty of four straight superbowls while being in the same division and the patriots were still a pretty good force to be reckoned with making a couple of superbowls during his prime while being in the same division... the one time he did have a dynamic defense, they went to the superbowl where they got beat by the 49ers in his second year, before players started retiring or being traded and you talking bout he's not clutch after seeing this one game where he beat the number one team defense that year who won the superbowl... and that happened with no pro bowl players on defense!!! The '85 Bears were quite possibly the greatest defense of all time...but watch Dwight Stephenson, the greatest center in the history of the NFL dominate the mighty Bears line. It is amazing, he played at 255 lbs and there are a couple of plays here where he threw the Fridge to the ground like a doll. He was known as one of the quietest, most unassuming men on the team, and he rarely got beat. Not many 8-year offensive linemen make the Hall of Fame, but he was a big exception.

My late father hated this game...LOL. He thought the Bears were going to CRUSH Miami! I was only 7 years old, but looking back, Miami was probably the ONLY team in the NFL that was even CAPABLE of beating the Bears in the Super Bowl. They had a quick-release QB, small but fast receivers that could get open, and a decent offensive line. They exposed the Bears' defense only weakness - their secondary. They seized the momentum early and the Bears couldn't recover. When Clayton caught that lucky ball late in the game, my dad yelled "GOT DAMN!!!!" :)

Marino was one of the few QBs during that period that could really expose the Bears defense. He made quick decisions, had quick release, and had receivers that could make plays in man coverage. The 46, as good as it was, depended on getting pressure on the QB. If you can't apply pressure, the 46 can't work. Dan was able to consistently get the ball out before the pressure could get there, and he exposed the Bears' CBs who were on an island in man coverage. And if the pressure couldn't get to him, his passes were going to be for big gains. I can see why Mike Ditka tried to tell Buddy to implement a zone defense at halftime. Do the Dolphins beat the Bears again if they get to the SB? Who knows. But they would have given the Bears a much tougher fight than the Pats. And if the Pats could have rushed for over 200 yards against the Dolphins defense, Sweetness would not have had to worry about being iced out.

I remember being at the Orange Bowl early 70's to see the Allman Bros, BTO & Wet Willie. We were in the upper deck somewhere & I swore the stands were literally moving up & down. I thought the place was going to collapse. GREAT memory !!

Really... fish lost plenty BIG games in the orange bowl... just in the playoffs they lost the classic vs the chargers, 2 years before this to Seattle, a few weeks after this in the afc championship game to New England...

All the talk throughout the game about Duper, Clayton and Marino is justified. But what's not talked about is the interior O line of Miami led Center Dwight Stephenson. Most teams couldn't slow down the Bears rush, Phins line as good a job as anyone all season on them.

@@tomrod1949 Exactly, I’m not saying Brady isn’t the goat but there are 3 way more skilled qbs than him that include Marino, Rodgers, and Peyton

@@aidanmiranda6140 y'all out your mind. Brady, among others, had INDIVIDUAL greatness. More skilled my ass. Marino held the bal a looooong ass time. You'd be sacked in todays game. Marino is not, i repeat, not a top 10 all time qb... Period

@@aidanmiranda6140 you say marino is better than brady and i have the L take? 1.brady 2.montana 3. Peyton. 4. Arod 5. Brees 6. Mahomes 7. Elway. 8. Big ben 9.Russel wilson. 10 bart starr. Thats not a ranking, thats just 10 guys ultimately greater than marino. Stats and non measurable "talent" is important, but qbs and defenses are measured by rings. One day guys like Herbert, allen and burrow will enter this conversation. Marino was great for his time, but he couldn't win the big one. Marino's stats look like matt Ryan's. C'mon man. Guys got better, it is what it is.

It’s one thing to see highlights, but nothing beats watching legends play by play. If Marino played in today’s game, he would have tossed 600 TDs easy and won multiple Super Bowls.

I couldn’t agree more. I wasn’t born until the summer of 89. I’ve watched highlights of Marino game’s multiple times. Watching highlights is fine but full games is sublime.

There have been many games of this caliber; it’s just that this was a high profile game on MNF between big names. And Miami revealed the Bears weakness on the back end.
