Dom's RX7 has an interesting back story. Rented from a private owner and transformed into a world famous street car, this car went on to be re-purposed for 2 Fast 2 Furious.

I wouldn't really call it a staple of the community, so much as it's an influence on tuner culture. Granted, said influence led to plenty of mixed messages, not to mention the franchise's more style over substance approach. Even the more "realistic" Tokyo Drift has some mishaps if you know a thing or two about car culture. It also didn't help that tuner culture was getting confused with ricer culture, which was a massive red flag for car guys. The excessive decals and exaggerated bumpers and side skirts and blinged-out rims making less for practicality and more for attention. Simply put, Fast and the Furious is to car guys what WWE is to wrestling enthusiasts: over-glamorized fiction.
@mattc2306

@E Peen I can respect that. I actually played a few GT games myself (though I was also introduced to games like Project Gotham Racing, Rallisport Challenge, and Forza Motorsport, as I grew up with an Xbox in the early 2000's), though I was generally more into the likes of NFS, Burnout 3: Takedown, Midtown Madness 3, True Crime: Streets of L.A, and the GTA games simply because of how over the top they were. I was also into jank filled messes such as Driv3r and Enter The Matrix, though that's an entirely different discussion.

@E Peen I've always had a soft spot for the yellow Skyline, as the R33 model has always been underutilized in car fiction.

Damn some of the stuff the production crew wanted in these films is ridiculous 😂 Like how they wanted that tasteless wing on the RX-7 at 8:07 and also how they wanted Roman’s car to drive upside down in a freakin’ tunnel... You really did an amazing job to bring them back down to earth in some of their decisions, well done. 👏🏼

Because Initial D is made by car guys, for car guys. Fast and Furious is made by people who mostly care about making money, for people who usually have no clue about cars. That is the sad truth. Remember in the Jetta video Craig said that woman was getting a contract from Dodge to get those Neon SRTs? She mostly only cared about the contract and didn't give a toss about what impact those Neons would have on the audience. There's your example right there.

Id love to see the rx7 return in a fast and furious movie. You could have a scene where dom opens his garage door and rips off the cover to reveal an old and dusty rx7. The following scene will be a 20 second montage of dom drinking corona while painting it black and LS swapping it followed by a rough masculine quote about family.

I was, at the time, working at a gas station in VA, working the full-service single gas pump at a gas station. It was gorgeous. What made it even better, it was all stock and appeared to owned by an old gentleman; it was not riced-out like those in these movies.

Oh yes! as a Rotary enthusiast I was waiting for this one. The FD3S RX-7 is my dream car so these were by far my favorite cars in the movies, and I was crazy to know more about these RX-7s, specially their fate which is pretty nice to see they all basically survived (save for the micrig car). About the rumours I sincerely hope they don't touch this car again, feels like these days Fast and Furious is all about "how much destruction we can cause" and it would be disheartening to see this fantastic car going to waste, specially when Mazda built around 35.000 of these cars which is not a lot. The style from these RX-7s aged surprisingly well too, specially the 2F2F car which reflects the more "simplistic" approach people have these days for car customization, you did fantastic in telling them off that 747-sized spoiler, it just looked goofy and ridiculous, even for these movies.

Sadly, Vin Diesel curb stomping a crack in the parking garage to make it collapse is more the flavor that audiences are looking for. I’ve watched the original maybe 15 times and could recite most of the film line by line, I saw F&F8 in theaters once and don’t have any desire to watch again. A local theater did a screening of the original film last summer and it was honestly the most enjoyable experience I’ve had in a theater. Best we could hope for as far as these movies going back to their roots is maybe a low budget spin off focused on the tuner culture again

He picked it up the next morning off screen. The RX-7 is present on his drive when he shows Brian his Charger, and then again at Race Wars. I mean... both of these were mentioned in the video 😂😂

I often wondered why Dom was into this tuner to begin with. Yes he rebuilt his dad's muscle car and drove muscle cars for the rest of the other F&F movies, I just don't get that if he loved muscle cars more than anything, why was he driving a tuner in the first movie? I know "it was in the script" but that answer isn't good enough for me.

Perhaps it's the hype at the time. I think he could have drive the charger from the earlier part, but maybe because it's his dad's car he opt to work for his own car, whatever that could have been. I firmly believe the former

It never made sense that dom who likes muscle would go for a rotary which is notorious for being the opposite, high revving and lacking torque

It made sense for him to invade a street race involving tuner cars in a tuner car. He also helped Brian with his Supra which shows that his interests isn't limited to only muscle cars.

@@vontavius01 the charger is in the first movie. I'm saying a rotary is the exact opposite of a tourquey v8 even if they were going to have him drive a tuner car to blend in to the scene or whatever it shoukd have been one of the cars with a bigger tourque monster engine. Like the skyline or something w a 6cyl. Not a rotary which is known for lacking torque and bottom end.
