I do see one weakness with the Hippo Opening - while it prevents white from making an effective attack against you, you also don't have that much of an opportunity to make an effective attack against white without breaking your defensive structure. White can basically put you in Zugzwang with the right move.

So I tried a couple of times it very good but you need to be very disciplined and be ready to capture better pieces. Also you will mess up a opponent structure because they bring too few pieces to the fight

Don't panic ever! If you are able to get all the moves in, you can start maneuvering your knights around to better squares. I often expand on the king side with g4, put the knight on g3 and then f5, things like that. It depends for each game. You can download the free guide and see some example games in it (Pinned comment!)

@@calebcheung7189@calebcheung7189 there are 2 cons Cons: 1.the king or queen pawns can be ruined very easily. After the D6 just E5 and then the queen pawn is already ruined. And the king opening is ez to. after E6 just push D5. 2.Your rook can be trap very easy. In white just do English opening. After black E6. Then put bishop to B2. There ya go ez rook.

@@203AmongstThesuspocious give it some time to get used to it, you need to get a sense when to expand which pawns (f,c). Also you just need to be careful with opening bishop's diagonals, but this is for every opening. Try playing unrated games until you get a sense for it :)

It's actually a pretty underrated opening, i have a 67 percent win rate at 1900 (in fact it brought me to 1900, currently at 1918)

hippo is only good if white doesnt know the refutation, which is to push d4 e4 f4, and then if pawn is already on e6, you go Bd3 and you have to not hesitate and just push f5! which is just completly crushing, if black goes for d6 first instead of e6, you go bc4 and you got even better position. This is the reason why hippo can be good only in hands of really strong players, (IM level or higher) because you have to know how to survive in those modern/pirc type of positions, which you get when you are playing the hippo.

My game went to top 90s in percentages .... watching and rewatching, and rewatching this... So, of course, I got reported for cheating. Oh well, thanks for the awesome video! I played this opening against a 2300 Elo bot, I was almost winning but it ended up a draw since there was only a knight for white and a rook for black, I played as black. The draw was due to the 50 move rule.
