James Kalm is out on a “rough cuts” road trip, wheeling between downtown Brooklyn and the bottom of the Lower East Side, to catch some of the current presentations at these avant venues. Don Doe’s “I’ll Have What They’re Having” is a mash-up of images the artist has curated from Renaissance masters, Sears and Roebuck catalogues, and 1950s softcore erotica. The collaged figurative elements create multilevels of identity, gender, and narrative. In this spontaneous strolling chat, Doe states, “This is about acknowledging the gender interest of our current times.”
Across the Brooklyn Bridge and down to the “lowest of the Lower East Side” your reporter drops in to No Gallery for a gander at Jaxon Demme and “Celestial Cues”. This show is grounded by a pair of large rugged painting on panel that combine numerous medias, approaches and techniques with a kind of “bad girl” attitude. The scruffy abjectness of the paintings and drawings are enhanced by an installation of 72 “concrete butterflies”. A musical introduction is provided by Naga Ecstasy. This program was recorded February 18, and 26, 2023. #jameskalmreport #jameskalmroughcut #lorenmunk

Don doe has the muse upon him. When you have it ideas just flow into ya from seemingly outta nowhere. But you can lose it, I guess get old you just lose it it's a blessing while you have it. I miss mine. Just watched Bob Dillion interview was asked "how do you come up with words to your songs?" Bob says, "they just came to me" . He didn't know where, outthere or deep inside? But it's gone he said. He misses it. The muse Thanks James

Loved the show. Love how he pushes the limits of painting in what can be seen as traditional painting. I may be wrong , l am sure you visited a previous show of his about 5 years ago. If so interesting to see the development. As always thanks James and THANK YOU KATE. P.S. one day you must tell us who Kate is.

I really like your coverage of outsider art, which is how I discovered you. I am becoming a fast fan. I also like how you give some due to buskers. Is the outsider art fair the same time every year? If I ever go to New York, I would like to plan my trip around that. Also, are you familiar with or have you ever seen the work of Daniel Johnstone or Wesley Willis? They are both outsider artists who became somewhat famous as outsider musicians. Very interesting guys who both died too young.

This work became dated kitsch the moment he tied it "gender issues"...Can we make an effort toward a more universal or timeless art, please?

Did you even see the show? Exhibition titles aren’t important really, and are often a misdirect after a few years. The paintings live on.

@@donalddoe6157 Good Morning Mr. Doe~ Thank you for your kind follow up reply. In a second reply you indicated that any effort made pursuing a more "timeless" art (my words) was a "fools errand". Maybe. But, I'd like to think that there is still some meat left on the bone for art to talk about the experiences we All share such as love, loss, redemption, where are we, why are we here, where are we going, you know- things which we humans have had in common since the beginning. I wish you the best though. dan

Who isn't an artist these days! There is nothing unique or rare. Art is as common as shit, or Andy Warhol prints. It's in ever corner or toilet hole. Thanks Kate.
