God this gets me every time. We don't always get it right in the uk but when we took this song to number one in the charts in 1980 we gave a great singer the recognition he deserved for taking a classic song and making it even better.

Don's version of "Crying" is so moving and so heart-breaking that you literally want to curl up in a ball, pull the covers over you and cry your eyes out. The somber strumming of the guitar, the sadness in Don's voice and those strings in the background make this one of the greatest ballads ever, in my opinion. Roy must be proud. RIP, man in the black shades.

Unfortunately, Roy stated that he "hated" this version. I think he deep down knew that it was better than his.

This was my song when I was young. Don M and I are the same age. It was like he put words in my heart. I was crying too. But six months later, we got back together, married. Celebrated our 50th anniversary this year! We, neither one, wanted to cry any more. Never give up.

McClean is one of the most under-rated song writers and vocalist in modern music history. Its a shame that most people know nothing more about him than American Pie. Talent of his measure is hardly scene anymore.
@stevenwentworth81436 жыл бұрын
I agree. Mclean's version is more emotional than Orbison's original

I love the song, and many artists have done it great justice. There are many “coverages” of “Crying,” but the best one, and I’m including Orbison’s version, is by Don McLean. I don’t know exactly what it is in his voice, but he “sells” the song the best. And of all the different times he has sung it, McLeans best version is this one. I’ve heard him sing it many times in concert, and although he always does a good job, this recording here is his best version.

The way the song builds is absolutely spectacular. I LOVE Larry Butler's dramatic production on this song and Don McLean's vocals are superb.

This song will always remind me the night I met the man I loved and dated for four years and realized he was wearing an engagement ring with the girl he has met only six months before...I almost died that night. And I thought I would never stop crying after that.

Next in line to the Big O himself (Roy),I'd have to say Don Mclean nailed this song to perfection (man! those high notes rang out!). He definitely has earned my respect for his musical talent, from American Pie, to Vincent, to all his other less known but still as amazing compositions.

It's rare that that I can be equally moved by two renditions of the same song, by two such different voices as Don's and Roy's. from now on whenever I hear either of them sing it, I'll think for just a second of the other one.

I adore this version...can't get enough of it ...

I've always been fond of the late, great Roy Orbison; he was an amazing talent. And I've heard both versions of Crying back to back. I just prefer Don Mclean's version the best. Something in the way Don sings it makes it sound so soulful and plaintive. It strikes a sharp chord in my heart that Orbison just can't quite accomplish. I'm NOT saying Orbison was an inferior singer; far from it! It's just the way Don sings it hits me more in an emotional way.

@tonyginnetti58285 жыл бұрын
It's all about the arrangement! Orbison was one of rock's finest voices ever but the tempo was a bit fast to be emotional and the music track was too (Orbison-style) thumpy. Everything about McLean's version is spot on!
@greenacres19093 жыл бұрын
@@tonyginnetti5828 True... the tempo really leaned into the emotion for McLean... plus those full voiced, wailing, "Crying"s help A LOT!

Such a beautiful song. Reminds me of 1988. A young woman from the USA, whom I had been dating in London for a few months, had flown back home to Utah. The following morning, I heard this song on the radio. I thought of her, and, with a heavy heart...started to cry. Memories!

I saw an interview with Roy Orbison one time and he said that this was one of his favorite covers of any of his songs. He was asked if it was better than the original. He said he would not go that far, but he said it was close.

this is a wonderful song.. and says what it is to break up with someone and still love that person. I married a man, he was a singer, he sang this song at gigs and even when we were together I still cried when he did so, and now that we are apart, I cry even more, especially when hearing this song, even though I know we cannot be together I will always love you ALLEN.. but "you and I travel to the beat of a different drum" love always Your Jeanie

On this day in 1981 {May 30th} Don McLean performed his covered version of Roy Orbison's "Crying"* on the Dick Clark ABC-TV network Saturday-afternoon program 'American Bandstand'... The song entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart on January 18th, 1981 at position #37; eight weeks later it would peak at #5 {for 3 weeks} and it spent 18 weeks on the Top 100... And on March 8th, 1981 it peaked at #2 {for 4 weeks} on Billboard's Adult Contemporary Tracks chart, and for the 4 weeks it was at #2, the #1 record for those four weeks was "What Kind Of Fool" by Barbra Streisand & Barry Gibb... Between 1971 and 1981 he had nine records on the Hot Top 100 chart; two made the Top 10 with one reaching #1, "American Pie" for 4 weeks on January 9th, 1972... Donald McLean III will celebrate his 72nd birthday this coming October 2nd {2017}... * On April 26th, 1981 his "Crying" was at #34, and one position lower at #35 was his covered version of the Skyliners' "Since I Don't Have You"...

DON MCLEAN (Originally by Roy Orbison) "Crying" I was alright for a while I could smile for a while But when I saw you last night You held my hand so tight When you stopped to say 'hello' And though you wished to me well you couldn't tell That I'd been Crying, over you Crying, over you Then you said so long Left me standing all alone Alone and crying. Crying Crying Crying It's hard to understand That the touch of your hand Can start me crying I thought that I, was over you But it's true, so true I love you even more, than I did before But, darling, what can I do While you don't love me And I'll always be Crying, over you Crying, over you Yes, now you're gone And from this moment on I'll be crying (crying) Crying (crying) Crying (crying) Crying over you Over you Over you ~~~*~~~ ДОН MCLEAN (Первоначально Рой Орбисон) "Плач" Я был в порядке на некоторое время Я мог бы улыбаться на некоторое время Но когда я видел тебя прошлой ночью Ты держал мою руку так крепко Когда вы остановились, чтобы сказать "привет" И хотя вы хотели мне хорошо Вы не могли сказать Это я был Плачет, над вами Плачет, над вами Тогда вы сказали так долго Оставив меня стоять в одиночестве Один и плакать.
