I spent 42 years in TV. I got a chance to meet McLean, at Country Jam about 15 years ago. He was a great interview, and a great person. He signed my cassette tape, and I donated it to a youth charity. That tape went for over $250 at an auction. Thank you Don.

Beautiful song❤ My grand dad fought and died at the Korean war. It was a proxy war for the cold war. But we are thankful for the veterans who fought for the peace… I heard the song that president Yoon sang the other day…. It reminds me of the deaths and how we thrived from sorrow.

Who's watching in 2024? It was more than 50 years ago when I first heard this song, my pre-teen years. Don, my namesake had a head full of curly and thick hair then. I was born and raised in the Philippines 🇵🇭 and the lyrics didn't mean much, but I learned the chords, memorized the song, strummed my guitar and sang it with my 4 brothers and neighbors. Those were the days. Do you recall what was revealed 🤔 the day the music died?

@@charmedprince hey you could be right, but I think some of that tech was first launched 96 or 97. Cher had her hit 'Believe' in 98 for example. In any event, this is a great performance, I'm just flagging that it feels like some vocal processing and doubling and perhaps a little auto-tune tech is used, but good luck to him. Classic, fantastic song, great live performance with or without a little assistance!

@@charliesouthgate6125 Yeah, I admit here a year later what I wrote sounds a bit fan-boyish. But this song... it's a part of me. It describes the turmoil my country endured through my formative years. And actually, there's a much more personal reason why I love American Pie. When I was a child through the 60's my mother always sang me a song at bedtime. So when I had a daughter in the 90's & 00's I would bring my guitar into her bedroom every night and we'd sing a bedtime song of her choice together. I usually brought in a 3-ring binder of songs I had printed. And her favorite bedtime song was.... you guessed it. American Pie! I sang this song hundreds of times for my daughter at bedtime. When she was very young it was adorable when she'd make the sign of the cross when it got to The Father, Son and The Holy Ghost. Too cute for words. Now lest you think my daughter was a much deeper thinker than a regular 6 year old would be I should point out that the actual reason she chose American Pie more than any other song was because it was the LONGEST SONG in my 3 ring binder. And children have their priorities at bedtime. "Read me the long one Daddy" :) Nonetheless, to me American Pie is a masterpiece. And listening to and seeing interviews with Don McLean I can tell that he and I are, to a large degree, cultural birds of a feather. I respect him and I understand what loss he was lamenting in American Pie. I have two older brothers who were about Don's age, and I got to understand the sock hop era through them. The other day I got a text message out of the blue from my now 28 year old daughter who said "GUESS WHAT SONG IS ON THE RADIO?!?!?!" Shared memories.... they're the best!

An American classic. Folks today don'y realize how tough the road of a popular musician was in the day. They had to perform night after night to sell records or get the local DJ's to play their rcord on WHOO.

This has been my favorite song since I was 3. It’s one of the most unique songs of the 20th century, and not a single other song has come close to the energy changes, complex story telling, and constant balancing act between grief and hopefulness. It’s an absolute masterpiece.

This song still brings me tears. It's as much a tribute to Buddy Holly, the Big Bopper & 17-year old Richie Valens as to Don McLean. A powerful song of one of the more tragic moments in the rich history of rock and roll

The American People anyway. China or Russia might have different takes. But it's the perfect American anthem, isn't it? Should it replace the Star Spangled Banner, which half the country wants to take a knee for now, anyway?

I remember the 'Day The Music Died' I was only little but I remember my parents talking about Big Bopper, Richie Valens and Buddy Holly were lost to the world. I wonder what they would have produced if they had lived? Done Don McLean is LEGEND as is this song. Always brings a tear to the eye of anyone from this sad era.
