I've run into this as I like using crystals on my basing. Instead of complimentary colors though I went with triadic harmony. I think it worked really well since it looks great but triads are more meant to pop and add than to draw attention.

I dunno, my dark blue space marines and dark purple necrons seem just right on bright red bases. Also playmatts are often bright and warm colored anyway. In general, I don't think in miniature painting attention drawing tricks have much meaning, miniatures ain't billboards after all.

Some of those new AK interactive basing pastes would probably be contrasted well by the new citadel contrast paints. At least if you wanted to go crazily vibrant, for like a daemon base or something.

My basing schemes for all of my 3 armies: Raven Guard - Basically Stalingrad in the winter, Corax White rim Dark Angels successor - Scorched Earth, Corvus Black rim Grey Knights - Daemon World of Khorne aka brighter than the ones my Dark Angels successor stands on, Abaddon Black rim

I always keep my army bases neutral unless I'm going for some sort of effect or keeping the army tied to terrain I make for them, as is the case for my Star Wars Legion Rebel army where the camo colors are chosen specifically to blend in with the terrain colors. For everything else though, I use the color of the model to draw the eyes away from the dull browns and creams of the base.

Great video! I wanted to check, Yellow/purple are _contrasting_ colours not _complimentary_ ? Complimentary colours sit beside your chosen colour on the colour wheel (for yellow that would be orange/green, for purple that would be red/blue) while contrasting colours sit opposite them. Is that right?
