I'm a former atheist. Soon after my conversion, I asked an atheist if he could measure the spirit of friendship after his insistence that the only worthwhile information is that which can be measured quantitatively. I asked him to assume the spirit of friendship was accepted as the highest unifying value for a culture and then asked whether or not that spirit could be called the god of that culture if that were the case. He became very angry with me after I told him his answer was overly intellectual drivel and didn't really mean anything. I commented on the spirit of anger that seemed to be suddenly possessing him and asked if he could measure that for me. He ended the conversation furiously (I think the kids call it a "rage quit." Poor guy. I hope he's doing well. Honestly, I shouldn't have engaged in the first place, but he insulted me as I gave glory to God for healing my depression - something science only ever made worse, by the way - and I let my anger get the best of me.

I am not convinced any god to be a reality for I have never encountered any credible evidence suggesting such a reality. So, until I do encounter sufficient credible evidence that such a reality exists, I will continue to suspend any acknowledgment concerning the truth of _your_ claim that one does. THAT represents the entirety of my position of atheism. Instead of fearing this rational position and disparaging those that hold to it, take the time and effort to understand the position.

@@Theo_Skeptomai I believe the point many make is that God Himself is love, justice, mercy, etc. Basically, you cannot measure mercy, tally resolve, or chart peace. The evidence for these concepts is not proven by the scientific method. The spiritual is expressed through what the living do physically. The reason why there’s a correct God is the same reason you can’t make up a new emotion. The physical evidence we have for God is what we do: love. In the belief that God is love, or is at least the ultimate origin of love, God can be assumed to exist.

Love moves faster than the speed of light. You can love anyone and everyone in the past present and future instantaneously from an infinite distance. Metaphysics were what lead me into spirituality which eventually lead me to Christianity and now Orthodoxy. Metaphysical/spiritual forces like love, evil, as well as virtue ethics lead me here…the way the universe works clearly suggests a greater power that exists and is objective in nature.

I will say Fr, one of my best friends from church is in astrophysics and he’s one of the most faithful people ive met. Even science is a gift from God. So long as we accept the mysteries of God as being mysteries, science is the bread crumbs God gave us to try and understand His creation. As long as it doesnt try to supersede God and His teachings. So long as it doesnt attempt to replace God’s teachings science is a glorious thing. A true scientist accepts that they wont be able to understand everything and that some things you cant explain with science.

Meh. I agree that life's intangibles are not addressed by the hard sciences. However, love, friendship, loyalty, work ethic -- all of this is written about far more passionately and persuasively by generations of philosophers, psychologists, and artists than any religious text. And the best part is, none of those authors claim infallability or seek to impose morals upon you that the they transgress with impunity. Far from being a reason to be religious, the things this gentlemen is referring to are even more compelling reasons not to be.

I may not be able to definitively prove love or friendship exist, but I know they exist, because they are emotions that I experience within myself. Therefor, I do need proof for the existence of God, just like I need proof for the existence of unicorns.

First off, look up the Siberian unicorn. Secondly, don’t be so demeaning. If you truly want to change people’s minds, don’t compare their beliefs to something arbitrary, you don’t come off as intelligent, just sarcastic and pompous. In the belief “God is love”, we mean pleasure in things like hugs, shooting a gun, and other small things is only possible with God. Outside of God’s presence, these same things wouldn’t feel like anything. I wouldn’t change the definition of God just to suit your disbelief. I say that politely, I swear. God save

@@RocketwayAv57 By referring to the unicorn I do not try to be demeaning. I just try to illustrate that even Christians demand evidence before they believe something. That seems like an untestable statement!

They (anti-theists) don’t use the empirical scientific method. They use falsifiability and mechanistic methodology, ie theoretical. Perhaps too many of our clergy are disconnected from the contemporary philosophy of science and apologize for it as though they have done the difficult research and study of it. ??? When our bishops and priests teach the faithful to not consider evolution as not opposed to the fathers and Holy Writ, we have a contradiction of faith. The Holy Spirit did not teach both the consensus of patristics that Genesis is literal and also that modern clergy can accept anti-Christ intelligentsia’s nihilistic political narrative of origins being random and undirected by Pantocrator. The consensus of saints say that the materialists have conjured their anti-theist agenda. Even every modern saint.

I honestly don’t understand how anybody can be atheist. If I wasn’t a Christian, I would at least be agnostic. And it’s because of how many times I should have died and got lucky and for some reason the big dude upstairs wanted to keep me on this earth. Countless overdoses (I’m clean now) and a car crash that the tow truck driver and police said I should have been dead since I wasn’t wearing a seat belt kind of prove it to me. Besides the other weird stuff that has happened to me like asking complete strangers if a person I don’t even know is alright and them confiding in me. When I literally had no idea who the stranger or the person of the relation was. God works through us and helps us all the time whether you want God to do so or not. There is just too many unexplainable things that I’ve seen or experienced and I know that other people have to be going through the same thing right? I honestly want to know if other people experience that kind of thing. Because I would hate to be the only one.

Weak argument for god if you ask me
@Theo_Skeptomai
@Theo_Skeptomai 7 күн бұрын
Hello. I am an atheist. I define atheism as suspending any acknowledgment as to the reality of any particular god until sufficient credible evidence is presented. My position is that *_I currently have no good reason to acknowledge the reality of any god._* And here is why I currently hold to such a position. Below are 10 facts I must consider when evaluating the claim made by certain theists that a particular god exists in reality. To be clear, these are not premises for any argument which _concludes_ there to be no gods. These are simply facts I must take into account when evaluating the verity of such a claim. If any of the following facts were to be contravened at a later time by evidence, experience, or sound argument, I would THEN have good reason to acknowledge such a reality. 1. I personally have never observed a god. 2. I have never encountered any person who has claimed to have observed a god. 3. I know of no accounts of persons claiming to have observed a god that were willing or able to demonstrate or verify their observation for authenticity, accuracy, or validity. 4. I have never encountered any _valid_ logical argument, which also introduced demonstrably true premises that lead deductively to an inevitable conclusion that a god(s) exists in reality. 5. Of the many logical syllogisms I have examined arguing for the reality of a god(s), I have found all to contain a formal or informal logical fallacy or a premise that can not be demonstrated to be true. 6. I have never observed a phenomenon in which the existence of a god was a necessary antecedent for the known or probable explanation for the causation of that phenomenon. 7. Several proposed (and generally accepted) explanations for observable phenomena that were previously based on the agency of a god(s), have subsequently been replaced with rational, natural explanations, each substantiated with evidence that excluded the agency of a god(s). I have never encountered _vice versa._ 8. I have never experienced the presence of a god through intercession of angels, divine revelation, the miraculous act of divinity, or any occurrence of a supernatural event. 9. Every phenomenon that I have ever observed has *_emerged_* from necessary and sufficient antecedents over time without exception. In other words, I have never observed a phenomenon (entity, process, object, event, process, substance, system, or being) that was created _ex nihilo_ - that is instantaneously came into existence by the solitary volition of a deity. 10. All claims of a supernatural or divine nature that I have encountered have either been refuted to my satisfaction or do not present as _falsifiable._ ALL of these facts lead me to the only rational conclusion that concurs with the realities I have been presented - and that is the fact that there is *_no good reason_* for me to acknowledge the reality of any particular god. I have heard often that atheism is the denial of the Abrahamic god. But denial is the active rejection of a substantiated fact once credible evidence has been presented. Atheism is simply withholding such acknowledgment until sufficient credible evidence is introduced. *_It is natural, rational, and prudent to be skeptical of unsubstantiated claims, especially extraordinary ones._* I welcome any cordial response. Peace.

This guy didn´t make a point at all. Love and Friendship do not require a god to exist or any religious beliefs. A world that prioritizes a good standard of evidence does not mean that emotions aren´t important anymore. If anything the advancement of Science shows how important they are. Science is vastly more important than religious beliefs. Claiming something else ignores the horrendous suffering of the past without medicine alone.

What a shallow proof of friendship. The base being material minds? What sources even say such a ridiculous claim? My friend, I love you as another human, but your idea of friendship is conflicting, for it is not the reaction of material flesh. Could humans coexist without friendship? Yes, if survival truly did depend on it. Yet friendship blossoms in a seemingly unnecessary evolution of our person. If it be such an emotionally driven concept, what motivation is there to have it? And if there is one, tell me how motivation applies to evolution without a mind to design it. Forget pettiness, let us be brothers, if you’ll allow it. God save you.
