Most people don’t need ridiculous volume. I’m 52yo and learned to cut back my volume due to reduced recovery time. There’s a 23yo guy at my gym who does about 15-18 sets of deads each week. I see him Monday and then not again until Wednesday. He always remarks how tired and beat up he is from deads. I tell him to reduce his volume and his answer is I gotta make gainz brah.

Yes, you are absolutely right. I don’t understand how these kids can do so much volume WITH heavy weights. Even though they are young they will still reach a plateau sooner rather than later. I’m 49 and I recently cut the volume on the compound movements down about one third. Instead I do a lot of volume ( but not ridiculous volume) on the accessories.

How much volume would you recommend?
@dickjohnson5025

@@goncalopereira8267 Well, there is no magic number/ one size fits all. You have to find what works best for you. You’ll know if you have too much volume when you are sore for more than 2 days and fatigued. For me, I’m doing about 4-5 heavy sets when I go heavy. I can do 3-4 exercises per muscle group per day. Any more than that is too much and I definitely feel it because my recovery takes too long.

20 reps with BWT maybe. I'm 82 and do a set of BWT for warmups. I promise, you will hurt yourself trying to do 20 reps with much weight. It is just not worth it. Listen to mark. I am as hardheaded as anyone alive. I learned this the hard way. Triples work for me, and I have been lifting for over 60 years. Deadlifts, sometimes a couple of singles.

Bear in mind volume has to do with the amount of weight you're lifting as well as reps. So, for someone who is doing lots of reps and accys, YNDTP. If you are doing the program, the volume you're doing with heavier stuff can be equivalent or even greater. 400 for 5 is the same volume as 200 for 10, or two sets. Add in warmups, and it's easy to see why doing heavier weights can add up quickly.
@javi8129
@javi8129 7 ай бұрын
If you could squt 400 for 5 but instead do 200 for 10, Wouldn't that work a different energy system? And if so, then wouldn't it trigger a different adaptation? I'm just spit balling her. I don't know. I would imagine it would be more of a cardio like stress, makingit difficult for someone who is older to recover. Most of that demographic is trying to keep muscle and bone density anyway. I would imagine that lifting for fewer reps at a heavy load would be sufficient to meet that need.

So...I'm 68. Train twice weekly. 5 minute warm up on Schwinn Air Dyne, usually. Use a modified 5x5 protocol, where 3-4 sets are progressively heavier warm ups, in essence. Fifth set is heavy and 3-5 reps. Too much? I vary intensity if I feel sluggish or non-motivated. Most of my workouts are squat, standing press and Pendlay rows.
