Both of my h3s are junk... the squelch tail makes them pretty much unuseable. I had 3, gave one away. Ill take my baofengs any day.@@kchaney56

You can just type the channel number in as long as you have a frequency saved in that slot, 001 for channel 1, 002 for channel 2 etc.

From Mick @jimmybaker7479, thanks for the info. I was just playing with the radio and figured that out. Better late than never. Sorry for making everyone listen to 1, 1, 1, 1, ……..even I found that annoying.

Is this only able to tx on ham bands and not gmrs, like the uv5r is able to?

@Portie2216 Ай бұрын
From Mick: @flynlow43, I just tested one of the GMRS channels I had programmed and it did NOT transmit. That is good to know, thanks.

@@Portie2216 that's too bad. I have a license for both and like having an all in one radio. I really use GMRS more than ham. Those channels are much more active in my area. Glad you tested it, I almost bought one. Thank you!

@Portie2216 Ай бұрын
From Mick: @flynlow43, glad to help, I don’t hear much on the GMRS around here. I wonder if “unlocking “ the radio would allow transmitting, but would be worried about accidentally transmitting on wrong frequencies, or with wrong wattage.

What are the licensing requirements for these radios?
@matthewtaylor3301
@matthewtaylor3301 Ай бұрын
To listen, nothing. To transmit, a HAM license.
@Portie2216
@Portie2216 Ай бұрын
From Mick: @matthewtaylor3301 is correct, listening is free but you will need at least a technician ham radio license to operate

Ya if you wanna give up your 4 amendment rights sure get ya license. Just know when fcc wants to enter to check your gear you cant deny or u go to jail which is a clear violation of your right without a warrant but they dont need it when you get your license

Does it have alpha tagging
@Portie2216
@Portie2216 Ай бұрын
From Mick: Yes the UV-5R and UV-5RM Plus have alpha tagging you can display for each memory channel. I programmed in a name for each channel noting a repeater location using the CHIRP Software and then went through the radio menu to switch to display name in lieu of the frequency.

i hate the uv5r programming. TOTALLY COUNTER INTUITIVE!! I own 4 for them and can't stand the 100% guaranteed programming steps to configure even ONE repeater station. Just ridiculous. It's like the developers were totally wasted when they designed the interface. Chirp works of course. But when you are in the field and need to adapt, the steps should be against the law.
@Portie2216
@Portie2216 Ай бұрын
From Mick: I agree 100%, programming through the radio is horrible. I did about 3 repeaters and said I need to figure out CHIRP. It took a little to figure out, but now supper easy to program multiple radios the same. Let’s hope I do not need to make a field change.

@@Portie2216 I saw you mention in another comment that you may try out the H3/H8. I think you will like the TID and of course it can be unlocked too. For the field, the programming navigation is user friendly, without a manual really, if one is familiar with terms. Nice video. Subscribed today.
