Thank you Sir, very well explained, I am looking at this method now (now only) and will purchase soon. When buying it is important to go as high rice as you can for the simple reason that the angler needs to be confident that the odds are on his side and not on the fish side. Confidence is key, right to the last drop or cast, being confident helps the angler being more focus on how he does. Thanks

Fishing off a "cattle boat" the guides on top of rod is a benefit if fish runs under boat. Spiral wrap helps keep reel level when fighting fish.

Having the rod correctly built on spline is critical wherever the guides are placed... Radial torque will wear you out trying to keep the reel upright with conventional setup. ?Why is this NOT brought up about rods?
@UserUser-zm3fo
@UserUser-zm3fo 6 ай бұрын
Yes it is very important. Slow pitch rods use spiral (acid) wrap guides to prevent rod breakage due to line wrapping around a guide during pitch. In my experience spiral wrap is more stable. The problem is the guides are fragile and contact with the rail or fish swimming under the boat is worse with spiral guides.

Thanks so much for this breakdown! I'm a fly fisherman, but I'm now switching gears and getting into vertical jigging. Specifically, I'm targeting lake trout and Salmon in 50 to 150 feet of water. Jigs range from 1 oz to 2 oz (less than 100 grams). I think the application of slow pitching will crossover and be successful. As a fly angler, I am very familiar with acceleration of the rod in order to load the blank and, in turn, unload stored energy into the fly line. In slow pitch jigging, does the angler use the mass of the jig and resistance of the water to load the rod with energy by accelerating the rod upward? Once the rod motion is stopped, stored energy is transfered into the jig, causing the jig to be pitched or flung through the water. The ensuing free fall combined with jig characteristics entails even more voodoo! Am I correctly understanding slow pitch? In fly casting, matching the line's weight to to the rod blank is paramount. As I browse through slow pitch rods, I'm not finding anything rated for less than 100 grams. Some have suggested I just use a stout, fast action rod rated just below the jig weight I'm using. This would allow the rod to seemingly load under the weight of the jig, but I doubt that any old rod's ability to unload and unflex is adequate to pitch the jig. To me, the construction properties of a slow pitch rod blank are critical and more than a marketing scheme (as many tout on forums). I'm just unsure as to how to match a rod blank to the relatively light jigs I'm using 🤔

Matthew, You are spot on for you description on how SPJ works. The rod is essentially a tool for working the jig. Granted is can be used to some extent to fight the fish it is better to use the reel. @@JohnnyJigsTV oh snap! The mytho light seems like the perfect option 👍 Does the lack of backbone/spine in these ultra light rods necessitate a really good drag system to fight the fish? Do you recommend any particular reels (spinning). I've been eying the Shimano Stradic and Abu Garcia Revo Rocket for their price point and line retrieval speed. I'm just not sure how a 20 lb v. 11 lb mx drag translates to fish fighting ability Thanks for your time

so I went on your website and purchase an Elite rod. I will be fishing outside Miami and figured 250g will be sufficient in max 250' of water. I normally drift so current do not affect my line too much and if wind against current I drop a floating anchor to limit the water speed, I have been flat jigging the wrecks with 150g in 150 feet and did not feel I needed more, if 150g not enough I turn to something else. For now it will be rigged (please don't laugh) with a daiwa sealine 30 with upgraded carbon drag washers and power handle. If I like it I will invest more, I it doesn't work I blame the equipment and invest more haha...

Thinking on getting the 6-6 M rated up to 250g jigs. 119$ and want to keep it simple for starting SPJ. Reel will be torium 14 with 30lb j braid. Other rods im considering is the OTI pitch black slow pitch, the new mustad slow pitch rod or the Centaur Anglers Choice Constellation Slow jiggind rod, or the Oceans legacy slow element. What in your opinion is the best one for the price, best quality? Dont want to spend over 200$ but can do a little over. Fishing 250 feet max for Snapper,grouper,triggers etc

@DownloaderVideo
@DownloaderVideo 2 жыл бұрын
Of course, the key of Slow Pitch Jigging is to keep the most contact with your jig so all your actions are transmitted to the jig, when you fish a line that is too heavy for the situation your line will develop a big bow as the current will start sweeping it away when you let the jig go to the bottom, the load and unload of the rod will be affected as what you are reeling most of the line will be from all that slack/bow that you have on your line….you will barely move your jig.

It will be a fast action and the rod won’t do much loading but, you can flip and flutter a jig essentially on any rod - my advice is to give a try and get to know how that rod and any rod might load and unload under jig weight doing slow pitch I am inclined to think that may be the heavy action blue goofish SPJ rod however

No, It is Green. I know the Blue and pink ones are for slow pitch. The green one I have is for vertical jigging, that why I wanted to know if it will work.
@JohnnyJigsTV
@JohnnyJigsTV 7 ай бұрын
@@sunilramnath8972 Gotcha, yes it will work but as said before it will naturally have a faster action due to being a shorter and stouter blank. As long as you’re conscientious of it’s faster action then you can slow your technique down and impart a similar flutter that you’d get from a slow pitch rod. The draw back is that you’ll be working against the rod more than you’ll be working with it.

Hey Sean, It is very easy to break a slow pitch rod if you high stick or allow the blank to touch hard surfaces while fighting the fish. The rod is a tool for imparting a action on the jig NOT fighting the fish. So my answer is YES if you use a proper fighting technique (Fight the fish with the reel) you can catch a large tuna without breaking the rod.

To be clear the bend in the rod isn’t assisting in fighting the fish? When you say you’re pointing the rod down you’re not letting it bend as much? Had heard that the backbone of the rod was important. If not for fighting the fish what is the significance of the strong backbone on the slow pitch jigging rod?
@JohnnyJigsTV
@JohnnyJigsTV 2 жыл бұрын
Michael, That is a great question. The back bone on a SPJ rod will help with three things. One being it will allow for a punchier action on the jig and faster unload and the second is fighting the fish. FIGHTING THE FISH? Yes, you can use some SPJ rods to fight the fish using proper technique. We try not to go over parallel to water as a general rule of thumb. In the range from pointing down to the water and lifting parallel to the ocean the back bone in the rod will do the heavy work. The soft tip of the rod is definitely not designed to fight the fish but the butt section will in some cases. Once the fish is off the bottom I will soften my drag, stop pumping, and point my tip toward the fish and fight it with my reel only. Lastly hook set. Because the tip is so soft the back bone or but section of the rod will play a big role in punching the hook in past the barb. Hope I answered your questions. Johnny

this might be a stupid question but is it necessary to use a jigging rod for a slow-pitch jig? would the jig still flutter decently with a regular rod?
@JohnnyJigsTV
@JohnnyJigsTV 2 жыл бұрын
Not a stupid question at all. You can use any rod, but what you get from a quality slow pitch rod is a nice slow unload that looks as if the jig is fighting to swim "more realistic movements". Also the rods are light weight. This is a very active style of fishing so weight is important and the more you can shave the longer you can jig. It's equivalent to putting cork in a baseball bat. You will achieve better movements have more sensitivity and less fatigue giving you an advantage. It's the right tool for the job.

Regarding fighting the fish with the reel, how do you fight the fish without pumping when it comes to grouper and bottom feeders that can cut your line in coral please?
@JohnnyJigsTV
@JohnnyJigsTV Жыл бұрын
You can pump as high as level to the ocean with the rod upon strike. We generally fight the fish "grouper" hard initially, then back off and only use the reel. Once it is off the bottom, there is no need for pumping, just reeling.

@@JohnnyJigsTV I’ll see you after first of the year. I need a new rod or two. Be heading down to the keys for rest of winter. I bought my first rig 5 years ago, it was difficult to find slow pitch anything domestically. I’m amazed how it’s taken off here. I myself turned my friends on, they use to laugh at me while we would be deep dropping. Then I pulled up a grouper, no more laughs, they all wanted to know more. Your doing a great job on informing and even more so providing the right equipment.

I wonder why some youtubers say weight of jigs depend on the depth? How does physics work on that? I am from North East in range of 70 to 120 feet of water with occasional high current.
@user-il1gk1sb8w
@user-il1gk1sb8w 2 ай бұрын
It depends on depth and current, the deeper the water the stronger the current and the longer it takes the jig to fall to bottom so if it's light the current will take it further and it won't be vertical any more and may not reach ground if too light
