I was recently without a cell phone for a few days, and it made me reevaluate my relationship with watches, but also, to a wider extent, our connection to the online world. Around the same time, I decided to upgrade my classic G-Shock DW56001-E to a new 2022 release-the G-Shock DW-B5600G-1, a bold and functional watch that syncs to your phone with an app. These coinciding events have revealed to me why Casio and G-Shock are the watch industry's last and best hope against the ever-growing dominance of the Apple watch. In this video, I review the G-Shock DW-B5600G-1, compare and analyze the advantages and disadvantages of both, share the history of smartwatches, discuss why an Apple watch shouldn't be the only watch you own, and ultimately, why G-Shock is the better choice.

The appeal of the smart watch is a reflection of our disposable culture and a lack appreciation for craftsmanship and artful design. That's my primary objection to them. They lack character. A mechanical watch, on the other hand, represents one of the very few things that one can buy for a reasonable amount which, if properly cared for, will still be functioning like new in a hundred years.

it's so true! there are still many things one can "buy for life" but most of them are actually old items that have outlasted their previous owners and are ready for another chapter (thinking of old mechanical film cameras for instance, only company in the world to make new fully mechanical film cameras is Leica) but something that is actually made brand new today that can be a "buy it for life" is suuuch a hard thing to find! i never realized that mechanical watchesa re one of the few last standing products. thanks for reminding me of this i now have an even bigger appreciation for them.

I agree with you 100% I own both an Apple watch and a regular watch's. The apple watch I only use for the gym. Any other time its one of my time pieces. So just like a GMT is a tool for keeping track of time zones. An apple watch is a tool for keeping track in the gym.

Just wanted to say it’s been a while since I watched one of your videos and if this one is any indication, things have massively improved. Well done for all your hard work! I loved my G-Shocks since I was a kid and would probably say they’re my favourite watches, I’d wear one every day. But since I now spend all my time in a disappointingly civvie life, I found I have no need for anything as large or bulky anymore. Now I have a cheap Casio W-86 and an old Omega used to come out for weddings and funerals, but I’ve had an Apple Watch since day one. I agree with all of the criticisms of them, but it makes the tech nerd in me happy, and I think that’s why any of us chooses the watches we do. No military person on operations is likely to wear an Apple Watch due to the battery life, expense and fragility before they consider the risk of hacking. That’s why the Casio F-81W and W-86 were the most popular for most personnel. Cheap, cheerful and incredibly functional. I’ve seen infantry go for the slightly fancier stuff like G-Shocks. Fancier than that and you’re looking at pretty much just pilots, obviously. Remember a few years ago, US military personnel were tracked through a setting on their Strava account that put heat maps of their activities on the planet - there’s no need for extremely clever hacking at an OS level requiring intense focus and possibly contact with the tech in question when you can just follow people’s unsecured accounts because they haven’t read into the settings. Social engineering at its finest. It’s up to watch manufacturers to find markets for themselves as time moves on, and it certainly seems like Casio are the most agile. All the criticism of GenZ is the same as the criticism of Millennials before them, so I’m not particularly worried for them. The kids will be alright. Thanks for the great video, I really enjoyed it!

I've had my G-Shock GW7900B-1 for years and I absolutely love it. Ultra durable, solar chargeable and atomic clock syncing are the features I love the most. I used to own an Apple Watch years ago, but I grew to hate it. I felt that I fell prey to Apple telling me what I needed the watch for versus what I really needed/wanted. I'm not one of those people who has a death grip on my cell phone every second of the day. I prefer to not be tied to technology. I enjoy looking at any one of my watches to retrieve the time rather than looking at my phone. I prefer watches with character - something I don't think Apple Watches possess. It's for that same reason I don't have one of those stupid metal wallets that are so trendy these days. Leather wallets have a lot more character and soul to them. I understand that G-Shocks aren't for everyone, but I really believe everyone should have one.

I wear a lot of entry and mid level luxury watches but have so much respect for Casio/G-Shock. The company actually does have history that started with the four Kashio brothers. They were quoted to have all respected one another and each brother had their strength and expertise. The four would play a single role in finance, product development, marketing, and production. It was truly a family business. The last surviving brother is still involved with Casio. They were doing touch screen watches way before Apple, releasing a touch screen calculator watch in the 1980s! (and a few other models through the 90s.) G-Shock creator and Casio engineer, Kikuo Ibe, created the G-Shock in 1983 and still with the company. Casio offers something in every budget and they don't pretend to be something they're not. I always say everyone should have at least one G-Shock in their collection.

Casio was once also a popular digicam manufacturer. Their cameras had customizable picture profiles, and some could even take custom presets created with a third party computer program. Their last digicams were the Tryx series, a camera with wide angle lens and inbuilt beauty filters for the early selfie crowd. Photos from this camera could be sent directly to your phone for posting. Casio was ahead of the game in many areas, and it's good to see their watches are still widely bought and used.

Great video. I'm in the IT industry and as such, my hobbies/work usually revolve around fixing computers and/or tinkering with other electronic devices daily. When I was on-site, I loved taking my Casio EQB-1100 with me for the reasons you described; it's a clean, modern, no non-sense alternative to wearing a smartwatch. I find it easier to zone out my environment and increase my productivity. Even now that I am fully remote, I enjoy rocking my F-91W. It's slim, does what I need it to, and doesn't distract me with stupid notifications like my old Samsung Galaxies of the past. Thanks to you, this (technically-I'm only 23 after all) Gen-Z person/Millennial owns multiple Casios, a Tissot, and a Hamilton. My Tissot & Hamilton are both mechanical, and I plan buying a Tudor (not sure which model yet) and a Seiko in the near future! I have been having serious nostalgia for the 80's/90's when things were still technologically exciting, but things were still slowed down. This last year has been me reverting to a slower pace; keeping phones and tablets out of the bedroom, reading each morning while I watch the sun rise and drinking a coffee, going for walks every day, and deleting social media apps off my devices. It's been an incredibly rewarding experience. Thank you for making a watch video that isn't just about watches but also makes us think. Really appreciate all that you do.

As someone who works in technology, this video resonated with me. I can't remember the last watch I owned but as a kid I always loved Dick Tracey's watch so I patiently waited a few years for the perfect smart watch to come out, until I recently realized I have most of my notifications off on my phone, I don't care about any fitness trackers and their designs are so muted. I pick up my phone to check time and often it leads to unproductive email checking or social media. I recently purchased a Seiko 5 sports Automatic and love it. I am already planning my next watch, I want to set a goal to reach to justify a luxury watch purchase next. Love these little machines.

@Type B Flieger - just a small note: solar power has been a part of G-Shock watches for a long time. I have several, one is probabbly from 2011 (Casio G-Shock GW9200), and it already had a solar powered battery back then (the watch is still going strong, and it has been with me in a lot of different countries with different climate). And I agree, those are watches for "physical" world. Usually it is enough to check what the military is wearing in various active combat zones (different climate too), to see what kind of watches are tough and can take a lot. Apple? It wouldn't even be on such list. Toy watches, nothing more. Edit: spelling

Thank you for the review. It’s really interesting to see companies having a different take on the watch. I think simple activity tracking is a really appealing feature. I had a Withings watch a few years back which was cool for that reason. I have to say though, I disagree with your analysis on the situation. Minimalistic design may be « inoffensive » but that’s the point; some people don’t want their watch to express something, OR want to be able to change their look with a different band or watchface. To many, it is a utility first and should be able to adapt to any outfit that you pick. At least that’s a strong argument for this design, I think. You mention the G-Shock looking aggressive and dangerous. Not everyone wants to project that kind of look to express their personality. Some people really like minimalistic looking things, and appreciate it as art. Besides, I think an outsider look on a trend can be unreliable for analysis. For instance, on my end, I don’t like bulky, shiny watches and men in suits. I feel like every man wearing them looks the same, and it projects a pretentious but personality-less look. I think it’s not actually classy let alone beautiful and just copies old fashion. Still, I will be the first to say I’m probably missing the point of it. I may just not be sensitive to its appeal. I could go on about what kind of value I think it carries or whatever, but I don’t it would be relevant. Not everything has to be a culture ware. After all, some people just really like the look. I feel like the cancel culture argument is a bit exaggerated. Some people just think older design look old and don’t enjoy it. Also, cancel culture is supposed to be targeting what some deem morally reprehensible. I don’t think the g-shock design falls in that category. Ultimately, my opinion on a design doesn’t matter. If you like it (or any of the other things I dislike), all the more power to you. I think the fact people buy different watches is the proof enough that people do express their tastes through their choice of watch (including not wearing a watch). No matter how « lifeless » you personally think it looks. As for the Apple Watch, while it is massively successful, I think it is the prospect of more physical activity, Apple’s brand appeal and the convenience that sells it. But I don’t think it kills the mechanical watches market. I remember people stopped being interested in wearing a watch because they could keep time on their phone, before smartwatches were even an option. I honestly believe that people losing interest in mechanical watches and the Apple Watch success are happening at the same time but are not so deeply connected. In a way, more traditional watches remind me of physical music formats; fewer people want it now but that means it becomes more « quality oriented » for people who really seek products that give more attention to details. I think it can actually help « boutique » options thrive, not oriented towards luxury but around choice and variety. Maybe the wrist watch lost some of its mass appeal, but I don’t think it means it means its death, or even that its best years are in the past. Maybe the best is het to come! :D Finally, while it is true that social media is prevalent for many, it would be ill advised to ignore the growing interest towards « downscaling » in younger generations. More and more of us are taking a step back, not just from social media and the internet but from smartphones themselves, and turning to a « slower lifestyle ». Digital presence is heavily questioned, or even seen as detrimental. I think it may bring new life to watches, like it breathes life into dedicated photo cameras or vinyl records. I also think it gives room for products like this G-Shock to thrive. Smart enough to be « more than a watch », but dumb enough to appreciate the time we spend, and not just keep track of how much of it we waste :)
@137Furon
@137Furon Жыл бұрын
Although I am in agreement on fast fashion and things that are built to last, the smart watch at the moment just does things that digital watches DO NOT do which is part of their appeal. They are tools just like anything else, I think its a misnomer to call them smart watches as time telling is the least important bit about them, they are wrist computers and should be treated as such. Not really sure I like this wrist snobbery though, not everyone likes traditional watches and this feels like the same argument people (in the watch community) use to bash quartz watches which ironically you are singing their praises here.

This watch reminds me of my current watch the Garmin instinct solar. The watch visually looks like a G shock, however has more functionality and is closer in practice to a smartwatch. Some of the features include displaying messages, heart rate tracking, phone finding, the ability to change music playing and many other standard smart watches features. The display is always on, and in it's standard mode lasts 25 days. There is no touch screen instead the watch is controlled by 5 old school buttons. Being a Garmin the watch of course has stand alone gps tracking which I find useful for water sports and times when I don't want to carry my phone. I think you might find this watch interesting and would be interested to know your opinions on it.

I then started running 9 months ago as well. Now it would be very difficult to go back to a basic watch. Watching my cardiovascular metrics improve over time at rest and during exercise is so valuable. Sleep tracking is a game changer as well. I love my G-Shocks. I have a 5610 square, an all-metal square, a Mudmaster and a few others. G-shocks got me back into watches and stopped me from considering an Apple Watch. Now I love watches again. I have a Seiko diver and hope to get my first Rolex or Omega over the next few years. I have worn the G’s in all sorts of scenarios, such as saunas, in the snow, hiking, mountain climbing, swimming and running, and none have let me down. G-Shocks are a pure joy to own. I have a GBX-100 and I love the matrix display and pedometer. I really appreciate the fact that g-shock's move app doesn't force you to give it intrusive permissions like other gadget manufacturers do. GBX-100 and GBD-200 can display messages and notifications if you allow it, but the UX isn't very nice and few people probably use this function. The activity tracker is another pain point because of the looong time (5-10s) it takes to exit it. I hope they continue to improve the UX over time.

I agree, I also have both models. The first one was the GBD-200,and the only thing i like is the display,and maybe the notification feature. Then I find a good deal on the GBX-100KI-1 which is signed by Kanoa Igarashi, and has some extra functions. But the software is poorly designed and yes, the watch is slow. Sometimes disconnects from the phone, and not reconnect automatically, even manually is problematic to connect. The display is the only major advantage of this watch. I also have the old G-7800 model which I think is the predecessor of this design,but with the most function packed module. It is too bad they discontinued that module.

While not a big fan of plastic brightly coloured cases (yes, that includes Swatch too) I am a big fan of CASIO and G-Shock, with great timekeeping, reasonable cost, solar power, Bluetooth connectivity and great for travellers or holidaymakers - time synchronisation over Bluetooth and 200m water resistance. As a consequence I own 5 Casios of which a Marlin, 2 Casioaks, a Pro-Trek and a modern solar BT 5600. Great intelligent, convenient action watches.

Hi TGV, It’s good we’ve got the choice. No one is forced to buy or use an Apple Watch. I’m using my Apple Watch mostly as my training and health monitoring device. I wear it on my right wrist while having one of my real watches on the left. The Apple Watch’s gamification has helped me to close “my circles” for over 800 days in a row now. It has got a constant pulse and heart monitor alarming me if something seems to be wrong. It has got a sensor recognising if I have fallen and could call 911 if necessary. In case of not being a watch enthusiast my only watch would be another smartwatch - the Withings ScanWatch. It looks very similar to a normal wristwatch but has got health and training monitoring as well. The battery lasts for nearly a month without a recharge. I’ve tested it for two weeks and have to say, it is a very good combination of a normal quartz wristwatch with smart capabilities. Best regards, Claus

More then a week ago I found a good deal on the GMW-B5000D-1ER, about 280 USD and i couldn't resist. The stainless steel is gorgeously finished, and the STN display has a very good contrast even compared to the other g-shock watches that i have. Another watch that i purchased this year is a protrek prw-60T with a titanium bracelet and steel bezel. I like both designs, they are solar powered radio controlled and you have the option to use Bluetooth. But I never used Apple watches, and I think I never be. You need to be able to disconnect from technology. My smartphone is enough. And I think nothing can replace a good reliable, durable watch. Citizen watches are also very good, but they are somehow underrated. I love my Citizen promaster blue angel edition. It is solar eco drive, radio controlled, analog and digital. Maybe a Garmin watch is probably the closest thing for me to try.

Fantastic job, TGV! I love my 5600. It is my go to when it is time for a seriously rough day. While the buttons can often be more difficult to use than I’d like, the piece of fantastic overall. The Bluetooth to the phone app, alarm uploading, and time synchronization would be truly useful. If the piece was solar over all that would be icing on the cake. I’m not sure all the new features are worth double the price to me, as it is not an everyday piece for me anymore. If it was, then there would be no question. Regardless, it is truly refreshing to see Casio building on their classic mainstays without bastardizing them into some “smart” watch trendy thing that outlives its point and purpose. My entry to the ηorology trip is a G-Shock (GW-B5600BC-1BER), bought some years ago. Your channel convinced me to do so and I never regret it. Solar powered, radio controlled with bluetooth, it's a prefect tool for my everytime needs and a statement. I prefer hanging around with my mechanicals I bought after that, in order to keep them functioning (I don't like to watch them dead), but when it's time for workouts, for a sportier look, playing a gig or when I'm travelling, my G-shock is "my partner in crime" My collection sooner or later will have another one G-Shock or Casio, because they worth every penny. Adding a rechargable spy on my wrist? No, it's not of my taste. I worked very hard to have a sense about life just to screw it by spending money on a contemporary trend with worthless info that I do not really need. Above all, I was born and raised in an era you described very well and accurate and I don't really think that we are heading towards a bright future by having a rechargable spy on our wrist.....

Aside of the classic G there’s a quite a list of sports watches like Garmin, Suunto etc, which for me are a bit easier to look at and too offer limited connectivity to a smartphone (notifications.., deactivateable), and are the tooltastic watches of today, complemented by a nice 3 hands gem like a Zenith Captain (if one day funds will allow). Of course not quite as indestructible as the G-Shock

I own automatics, g-shocks from all “walks of price”, and a few garmins and apple watches, including the ultra! I mostly love gshocks though! It’s the idea behind them that makes them special for me, the rugged aspect and toughness! As well as the “not charging them very often” scenario! I swap watches quite often but, most watches I choose for my everyday wear are gshocks! The Ultra did spend about two months on my wrist as I became quite addicted to “closing the fitness rings” but, although a difficult and FOMO filled decision, I set it aside! It’s still an amazing watch but I feel it is too intrusive, conceptually! Of course one can trim down how intrusive it is! On the Casio side, feature wise, I think they are very very lazy! Because the features / sensors they use only appeal to people (such as me and perhaps you) that are used to more cumbersome ways of achieving a task that is so simple to achieve with apple watch! Casio rely too much on redesign and new cases and colors on modules that are either identical or ever so slightly upgraded! Enter Garmin! Solar powered! Tough! Amazing functionality! Battery charge up to 80 days even, in some models and features numerous and stunning! Displaywise, simple! Low consumer! Software…amazing! Because they develop stuff! Unlike Casio who create amazing looking monsters such as the GPR B1000, which I own and love btw, with the software that rivals very slow computers from the 1960’s! Why? Young generation will NEVER EVER go for that type! Garmin on the other hand stands a chance at least! Of, and then casio comes with a gsquad implementation of android with a battery that is worse than the v1 apple watch??? Really? I guess the future is (for mist) the Apple Watch type smartwatch! Although I really wish it wasn’t, like you! Unless Casio uses the brilliant design and toughness model on new and more modern modules, unless they try to inovate and incorporate cool stuff like perhaps hiring software engineers from this century! Perhaps purchase Matrix Powerwatch tech, like the TE generator! Or hey…I don’t know…anything but reusing the same identical modules with the latest rainbow colored special edition case! I would so love a Garmin Tactix Relta type software on a lovely display of Casio Gshock cases!

I have two smart watches, one by Apple. I wear neither. They were an interesting novelty for a while, but when I set all my watch faces to the typical three-hand configuration, I realized how much I missed my analog watches, both automatic and quartz. I think one of the best things I like about wearing an analog watch is how many people I interact with day-to-day who do not...who wear smart watches instead...and the looks they give me. There is something about a person wearing an analog watch that, to me, makes a statement about them and what they value. Digital watches, like those from Casio and Timex, have never been for me. I've never needed a watch as robust as a G-Shock, and if I'm going to wear a digital watch, I might as well wear a smart watch. But for me, nothing beats an analog watch, diver or dress, doesn't matter.

In March 2022 I got my first G-Shock (since 2010 I used few ordinary Casios). I was that close to buy the GBD-H1000, the smartwatch G-Shock, but last minute decided to get either GBD-200 or GBD-100. After trying on my wrist, decided to go with GBD-100-1R. Point was - I wanted a new running watch, but I also wanted to replace my super-old hip-attached Fitbit activity tracker. At the moment I am not a serious to get back to running, so went just for the activity tracking. And very important - this new display type with very large time numbers which is easy on the eyes. So the watch is great, does what I wanted out of it, the phone app is great, helps with the watch setup, time sync and running. It also is a half-smart watch and can receive texts and notifications from the phone. I never turned that on as you cant choose which app notifications to show and it would be a disaster to receive everything on a small display. However after a month i discovered i dont use the app that much and that it actually bothers me as i found myself often checking the watch screen if it is connected to the phone so i turned the connectivity off completely. Now i enjoy it more and feel the watch as a watch, not as a gadget. The activity tracking is built-in so i dont need it connected and it works just fine. And if there is a small time deviation it does not bother me. Despite being disconnected from the phone, not sure how this works but the watch automatically successfully switched the DST Off, so that was a good feature. And basically i dont need it connected to the phone. I am in the 40s, so while reading your texts on your phone to seem cool and seeing missed calls and eventually talking on your watch to seem a very useful feature, I so far dont need it. And also my G-Shock have no solar charging and the battery is just for 2-3 years, so I dont want to drain it for things i dont need. I am all about what functionality you need, not about being seen with a specific gadget for the current fashion trend.

I'm personally using a Withings Scanwatch which is considered a "hybrid watch". Love the timeless design, especially on a leather strap, combined with health tracking like ecg, pulse, steps etc

Remember those snap/slap bracelets that were big in the nineties? Still a better watch than the Apple Watch! Great video as every TGV.

OK, this is the video that got me. I've liked more than a few of your videos but this is the one that got me to hit subscribe. I loath smart watches but until I watched this I hadn't given any thought to why that is and why they might not be entirely horrible. Well done.
