I love how easy and approachable you made this, it’s so easy to feel pressured to build some legacy masterpiece or spend a bunch of money getting a nice easel. You reminded me how unimportant the easel is compared to what you are creating on it. Cheers.

You're welcome. There's certain places to spend a lot of money on art supplies and other places to cut costs down to nothing. Like spending on classes and workshops, certain paint pigments or papers, but not things like studio easels and big sets of colored pencils and paint sets and so on. Let me know how else I can help.

THANK YOU !!! I have been researching easels. So glad I found your video before investing hundreds on an easel. Your way of making an easel is better and costs very little.
@MeadMcLean
@MeadMcLean 2 жыл бұрын
I actually have a small easel for plein air and tabletop use. But you could also substitute a book stand for a tabletop easel. Or even rig a mount to put a book stand on a tripod. I'm not 100% against easels--if you do plein air every week, yes, get an easel. If you dabble in variety, I lean towards saving money.

Thanks, i usually buy art material I don't need when not painting. It relieves unrest, but your video is so resourceful and the easels less cumbersome Modifying the horizontal 2x4 to have a tray could be cool too and (not that i will, but) placing the vertical 2x4s on a track for movement

Exactly. The track idea I have thought of, but that's getting too easel-ey. You could also just use clamps.

For watercolor, I just paint totally flat. For a slight angle, I would just prop it up on a piece of board. A bit of that rubber mat stuff you put under rugs will keep it from sliding.

Great video. If you want to add another set of legs to make the easel free standing, just use thick door hinges to connect all the 4 legs at the top. To prevent the legs accidentally spreading / slipping to their extreme, tie some rope to limit the leg extension.

Yeah. Once you start getting into folding, it can get complicated. Keepin' it simple here. But standard hinges work well.

I don't normally use an easel as I've found I can't easily paint detail while holding my arm in mid air. This is amazing but I have a question. I’ve been working with soft pastels that are very dusty and most people use a forward tilting easel. Do you have any tips, tricks or ideas on how to create something that tilts forward (just slightly) without having to go out a buy an expensive easel? I’m so stumped on how to make this happen and hoping that you’re still around to answer since this video is from a long time ago. Thanks for sharing this wonderful video by the way! Genius 😊
@MeadMcLean
@MeadMcLean Жыл бұрын
You could just prop the drawing board on a cross bar on a standard easel, but add wedges or something behind the board to prop it past vertical. Then attach the board with the props to the easel with screws, clamps, or something similar.
@TinyFitz
@TinyFitz Жыл бұрын
@@MeadMcLean I will keep that in mind. Unfortunately I don’t have an easel yet because I spent my funds on art supplies and good quality paper before realizing the necessity of an easel while using pastels🥴🤣. I will. Right now I am working with smaller canvases. I have a few ideas in mind but I will have to build my own canvas of that size. I thought I could simply buy a few reasonably priced, nope. I plan to paint that size with my December retirement check. 1.2 meters x 1.8 metersCertainly, I understand. Currently, I am working on smaller canvases, but I have a few ideas in mind that require a larger canvas. Unfortunately, the reasonably priced canvases available in the market are not of the required size. Therefore, I have decided to build my own canvas of dimensions 1.2 meters x 1.8 meters. Glad you liked it. There are probably more ways to make an easel. Personally, I use makeshift ones for big and medium pieces, and I have a plein air easel for the tiny pieces.

How do artists usually put their canvases on the walls to paint, cheaply? I want all 4 sides to be free to paint on without one sitting on something. I'm sure materials used or how to do it.... can you help?
@MeadMcLean
@MeadMcLean 7 жыл бұрын
The easiest way is to just lay it flat to deal with the sides. I suppose you could hang the canvas on the wall also, but you'd be painting bits of your wall. Another option would be to attach the canvas to some 2x4s with clamps on the back. It depends on if you'd be dealing with the edges at the end or throughout the process.

I’m here looking for cheap ways to display art at shows outside. These could work in the right conditions with something to lean against.

Yeah you could. Generally, you'd be in a tent, so some kind of makeshift easels would work. You can also use display racks, lattice with hooks, and similar things.

@@MeadMcLean Haha nice. I live the very aggressive painting which would definitely mark walls from wood leant against them and don't have money for a studio life. Your space gives me so much nostalgia from back in the day when I could though.

I think you could bring the price down even more. Instead of 2x4 there's 1x3 furring strips, they're 1.55$ at the time of writing, same length. Just put them on an edge for rigidity, they're plenty strong for holding quite large canvases. For a a dollar more a small hinge would allow adding a back leg so it doesn't have to lean against the wall.
@MeadMcLean
@MeadMcLean Жыл бұрын
I find furring strips wobbly and splintery. But if it's all you got, it's all you got.
