DON'T buy another plugin before watching this video .. it might just save your next production!!
My name is Paul Third and I am a Scottish youtuber / audio engineer / mixing engineer / audio geek. I mostly cover audio engineering related content ranging from audio plugin shootouts / plugin comparisons (acustica audio plugins, universal audio etc etc) to actual analog vs digital / gear vs plugins plugin tests via access analog and mix analog. I even include ddmf plugindoctor tutorials in my plugin reviews so you can be your very own plugin tester and experiment and understand whats actually going on under the hood. I also discuss digital music distribution from time to time and like to give my viewpoint on online music distributors such as onerpm and distrokid.
All of my audio blind tests involving music production software are conducted in avid pro tools 2021 which is my main daw and I also use HOFA blind test 4U as my blind test software. In terms of my audio interface I record and monitor through a universal audio apollo x6 through topping dx7 pro+ dac/amp and use an se dynacaster for all of my voice overs.

Dude you're too funny. I mean you are hilarious. I can't understand for the life of myself why your channel isn't over 1 million subscribers. Anyhow, I agree with you. I recently started mixing in Harrison mix bus Version 9. Now I know how you feel about Harrison's claims but I don't want to get into that right now. What I found through mixing with mix bus Version 9 is that I don't need as many plugins because GUI is laid out like a traditional mixer and it forces you to use what you have like having a traditional mixer. So I don't go for trying to grab multiple plugins I just use the built-in EQ and then compression and saturation that's inside of the software Channel strips and I've been getting great results. The only time I grabbed a specialty plug-in is when I want to add something to sweeten up the 2-buss or a sub group.

I think that being a freeware guy early in my mixing career helped me a lot. I only purchase plug-ins that specifically help with what I believe the deficiencies in my mixing style are. Master the basics and you master the mix. Great advice!

This great advice is also universal as l have seen the same dynamic at play with photography and video creators obsessing about gear so much that it takes away from their creativity and feeds into the never-ending commercialist rabbithole of incessant acquisition & hoarding of gear. These days, when l look at online "tutorials" or "tips" of any kind, l check to see if their channel focuses more on gear or creativity/creating. I believe many artists have been lost in the fog of gear, shit is sad.

I took a step back a couple weeks ago and listed out what I needed in my studio to get my music sounding better. I had a couple plugins in my list. When I ranked them in order of need the plugins went to the bottom. I updated my interface to the EVO 16, got a new microphone United Studio Twin 87 and got some new 6L6 tubes for my dead Fender amp🤘 Have a great weekend Paul!

FM8 has a dated interface, but its not like there are any new FM/PM synthesis techniques over the past 40 years so its pretty much does everything you'd need. Dexed and Operator also do almost everything unless you want some very complex routing not in one of their "algorithm" presets. In which case get my free M4L synth ;)

Such an important message. I've sunk plenty of money into getting this that and the other plugin, emulator, etc. but it was costly and exhausting. a couple of years ago I made a deliberate effort to minimize my workflow to about 1-2 plugins per type of effect, and my mixes have greatly improved since then. Every once in a while I find that I truly can't get what I need out of one of those plugins and I go digging for another, but about 90% of the time I get what I need from that small selection. It also allowed me to get extremely familiar with them, which takes so much guess work out of the mixing process.

I noticed this with me bout a year ago, me now I go by what I hear. and I tend to use the plugin that can help me fix the problem the fastest and easiest. Doing this I spend less time mixing/mastering and I noticed my final product comes out crisp, loud, and clean. a win is a win. don't over think it.

Wow, what a timing! I have a video out today about pretty much the exact same general topic - use the gear you already have (from a perspective of a guitar player, who the last days found himself again being blocked creatively by GAS and the excuse of "if I have THAT, THEN I can achieve what I want"). It really seems like big portions of the market are flooded with gear-launches, hype-trains and marketing campaigns, since this video and this topic in general seems to resonate with a lot of people at the same time.

Totally agree. Ear training is crucial! Knowing why you are editing/adjusting and not just being a slave to the visuals of the frequency spectrum. Nowadays, there are too many eye-candy distractions. Its music man! By the way. Ive got waaayyy too many plugins...

Good stuff Paul. I listen to my friends who work in industries like broadcasting, and it's like listening to someone talking from the future. In parallel creative industries to ours, tools seem so much more focused on achieving a certain result with an improved workflow, and less graft to get the job done. So much bandwidth in the music tech industry is taken up by marketing tools that are trying to recreate the past. Obviously the classic tools deserve their place in any producers/engineers toolkit, but our industry is so focused on recreating what was, rather than how we move forward. In part, I think it's because so many hobbyists make up a large chunk of the brands income, and Pros only make up a small proportion of their income. That means that the majority influence where our tech goes, and how it is marketed to make profit. That's why we're in this endless loop of plug in releases that claim to capture the essence of hardware classics. It gives people the chance to feel like they own something that is out of reach. It's potent. Also look at how audio software platforms are being brought up by investment firms. It's big money for them. Obviously that's not 100% true for all audio software, and innovation is clearly happening in both music creation and mixing tools, it just takes a lot of wading through marketing to find what works. Which is always what works for you. I'd love to see more software tools adapt to the tools of the day, and move things forward incorporating what has worked from the past in the mix, while keeping us focused on our ears, how we use and develop our skills, and how what we're listening to makes us feel.

I think we should become au fait even demoing any plugin. That's what the demo should be for. Too many buy and then learn it, some never do and then get distracted by the next plugin offering The "oohhh piece of candy.." meme works best for me haha

Well said! I I love using the stock Studio One plugins and Metric Halo EQ/KHS free plugins. Amazing sound and nearly everything there. Some mixers get every plugin because they load producer sessions directly, and they need to have the plugins to load the session.

A fun little bus mixing tip I could share would be to use a mid-side EQ, and dip some of the low end on the side. Can help tighten up a mix. Magical.

I can get through just about any mix with 1 SSL EQ, 1 "digital" EQ, 1 opto compressor, 1 vca compressor, 1 reverb, and 1 delay. Until you can do that focus on learning how to efficiently and effectively use what you already have. You are just wasting time and money any other way. I used to buy every new (and old lol) plugin under the sun thinking it would be the solution to my problem. I just didn't realize yet that I was the problem haha!! I wanted the tools to do the work for me. That's not how this works, trust me! People overthink this whole mixing thing way to much. Keep it simple and you will find things get much much easier! Great video Paul, thanks man! Ohhh and by the way. I have had a handful of those clients that sent me notes back asking me to "narrow the Q" haha!!!!! 🤦🏻‍♂

I probably bought 1 plugin in the last 5 years. Professionally I use freeware because there's usually no danger of them stopping working, but also to prove a point! I love Chris Basefords last interview, he basically says "if you need topend then grab a plugin that gives you topend boost it and move on! " And it's true that's all there's it's to it. The in issue will always be the ear training (knowing you need that topend) not the tool. Any arguments over the type of topend from what type of device are purely arbitrary at this point.

Getting the most out of Kyma, the creative tool from Symbolic Sound. No need for purchasing an endless amount of plugins thus saving myself big bucks in the long run. I've acquired personal confidence and knowledge learning from Carla and Kurt, the creators themselves, with help from the friendly Kyma community at large. Highly recommended for all sorts of music projects.

I have an easy approach to plugins: Get the one out of the bunch out there, that I like the most, and never worry about the next releases. Best example is Superior Drummer 3: Got it in 2018 or 2019, haven't been interested in any other drum library ever since and still got the best today imo. Similar with the UAD Studer and Pultec plugin, Fabfilter Pro-Q3, PA Shadow Hills, Pigments 4 and the list goes on. For guitar and bass, there have been new hot amp sims every month the last couple of years (especially guitars) and I had too much interest in any new stuff. So I got pedals and a rack preamp instead and never have to worry about any new amp sim ever again, finding myself in absolute disinterest with those now too. Sure, some of the things you like the most can cost a bit more than alternatives, but it gives you exactly the sounds you live and need, and instead of buying 4 different ones, you buy 1 product. In the end, you don't worry about new releases, save time, be the happiest you can be about your sounds from the start and save money as well. That shift in mindset and consumption changed it all for me. Important message here, Paul. Thank you!

90% of a good mix is knowing what to KEEP from the rough. Changing everything for the sake is THE amateur move. THE BEST investment I have made is in a good A/B comprarison plugin. I got REFERENCE from Mastering The Mix, and its LUFS matched A/B to reference the roughmix always at the same level as my mix. Then you Realise for rea what you are competing with and what you should KEEP, which is VITAL. There are bunches of other good A/B plugins. Its the only thing that I could truly not live without.

Yes. If you can articulate what you want a new plugin for, and what you want it to do that your current plugins (including stock) can't -- in actual sentences -- that's one thing. But if it's just an undefinable want, work harder with what you have -- you can probably achieve it. I didn't take quite so long to learn this as I maybe would have, because I went through this with effect pedals. Once I said "No new pedals until I can explain what actual song in our set list I want to use this sound on," I didn't stop buying pedals, but the ones I bought I actually needed, and actually helped me sound better.

When you are getting paid for a mix you tend to just use whatever does the job quickly. Spending time A/B ing what eq to use on the snare just means you earn less for every hour you work. It can be hard to apply that mindset when mixing your own stuff though. That often takes waaaaay longer and turns into a plugin shootout rather than a mix. Theres usualy a deadline when mixing for someone else as well.

@@PaulThird It's funny because pretty much everyone that gets into mixing etc goes through that phase. Or over editing stuff perfectly to the grid etc. Nowadays the thought of having to learn a new plugin turns me off buying anything 😂 unless it's a useful tool that makes mixing quicker. Spend money on monitoring as that makes the biggest difference as you have been mentioning in your vids.

A plugin I’m using a lot is access analog. Slap an LA2A or 1176 compressor (when needed) or a 1064 channel for EQ, and the neve MBT on the master. I’m trying to stop using a bunch of plugins.

My very philosophy of mixing... plugins are tools to fix the things that annoy me, or enhance in ways that only they can do! I build my own plugins in Melda's MXXX which is perfect because "off the shelf" plugins usually fall short in some way, and I hate "workarounds"! I'm a certified (or certifiable) control freak 😎

Melda‘s rent-to-own deal is probably the only thing I would recommend getting to anyone who wants to go beyond the possibilities of stock plugins. It’s incredibly good and covers pretty much everything someone will need in their entire mixing engineer or producer life.

If I genuinely had melda mxxx from the start I would've just made my own plugins but I do use meldas own. Mautoalign on every mix and even mautostereofix will find it's use in premixing. I don't utilise melda as much as probably should but I just don't have the time these days

@@PaulThird well for a lot of people it is inspiring. Having something that excites you as part of your process can really help, like having a new guitar or synthesiser. Not for everyone of course. The fact that you can demo plugins before you buy them help of course so you're not buying blindly or based on other people's opinions. It's an expensive thing to do so not for everyone of course. Each to their own. Having made hundreds of records it's nice to throw new toys in the mix. I bought all the teletone audio instruments recently and did a very fruitful writing camp which was driven by getting inspiring sounds to work with, the process also included trying out loads of different mixing tools I've collected over time. I tried tried my collection of Arturia channel strips along with a bunch of other stuff. I have a growing vocabulary of tools in my head. For most people who are in the process of learning though it is overwhelming to have too many choices whilst trying to learn the basics.

Well said. I agree with everything. But sometimes (sometimes!) you want to pay for inspiration) Personally, new acquisitions inspire me. Even if I won't use it later, but here I am reading the manual, watching "tips & tricks" and working with new inspiration). But this obsession of manufacturers, trying to pass off every product as something unique just fucked me up.

Absolutely agree. My go-to compressor is the Logic Compressor--stock! And I own Waves and many other 3rd party titles. Why do I use it? Because I'm the most familiar with it.

I stopped buying new plugins after: Soothe2, Gulfoss, UAD Fatso, Analog Obsession, Fetish, Ableton Glue Compressor or Logic Stock Compressor, Purple, Pink, Taupe, El-Rey, and Sand from Acustica Audio, Pro-L by FabFilter. I don’t need anything else. Stock plugins from Ableton or Logic for effects.

I spent my first few years mixing with stock Ableton before going down the rabbit hole with plug-ins. When you learn all of the In-N-Out stock plug-ins, you can better get a sense of what they’re limitations are, and how to use plug-ins as tools.

I watch this channel in hopes of learning new techniques. All plugins I use are either stock to my DAW (Reason Studios 11), free or open source. Over the years, I have collected hundreds of these types of plugins. However, I only use a few. I am not affected by promotions of new plugins. I believe it is based on knowledge of how to achieve your result with the simplest approach possible. I never understood why people buy plugins from companies that just recycle old algorithms and slap a new interface and name on it.

You can experiment and play with differences, but just don't do it in an actual mix! I have days off where I'll just play with stuff to put it through it's paces. And if it impresses me it stays in the plugin folder. Another reason freeware is great is because there's no sunk cost fallacy so you don't mind deleting the ones you won't use.

I find that you're right about 80% about this. And let's be real, 80% of the mix is a lot. But... few months ago I started doing more and more tests (for my wallet's sanity). One of the most drastic examples I can share was that I obtained an N4 sampling of API 2500 and compared it against Waves and Acqua Pink on drums. Since then I can almost tell in a mix who used the actual hardware and who used Waves (surely almost nobody uses Pink). I understand all of us think "most listeners can't tell the difference", but I think they rather can't point their finger at it and articulate it, but people can definitely tell how a lot of mixes in the last decade sound the same. Obviously this comes down to a lot of factors, samples etc... But I think the sound of these plugins leave an imprint in our ears, may that be conscious or not. And I think there is also value in giving something a demo run and find that it made you discover something in your mix. I most certainly learned how to mix cymbals through API EQ presets lol.

I have to disagree. I've done so many tests where people claim to hear shit and completely fail a blind test, or claim to hear shit that is scientifically impossible haha I was speaking to a UK based engineer who remixed feedback from an artist, sent the old mix by accident and the artist was like cool... Imo Mixes sound the same because they are mixed and mastered toward streaming. They don’t want massive changes in the mix from one song to another while in a playlist. This and the overuse of spectral balancing super flat midranges

Beyond what's already stock in Reaper, & what is freely available from Tukan, the only plugin I'd never want to be without is iZotope RX & the Mouth De-Click. I did a clean install on a new SSD & haven't put any of the 5h1t back on that I'd accumulated previously & never use.

I started off in the olden days recording on a tascam-Porta 4. With a few guitar pedals for effects. The sound wasn’t brilliant, but it did the job and Things were more creative back then. Fast forward to getting a computer with one of those there DAW thangs and it’s a different world. The technology at your fingertips is better than most recording studios from the 70s & 80s. Now there’s too many reverbs and delays to choose from - when a Melos would have done a better job most of the time and it’s more tactile. It can get too distracting having so much choice and before you know it you’ve lost track of what you was supposed to be doing in the first place. I like many have and will no doubt continue to have G.A.S. & fall for marketing tricks and buy another plug-in some day. stock plugins in most DAWs are excellent quality these days. No need to spend more, most of the time. Save the money you was going to spend on the next plug-in or two and put it towards buying yourself that new mic , or instrument. Or go to the bingo with the fatlass from down the road. You never know, It might inspire a new song . That song could be the one song that the world gets to hear.’ Or you could just buy your 15th reverb plug-in to add to to the collection that no one will be able to tell the difference between that one & the other 14 reverbs. *extract from “my rusty trombone” magazine - when Big Chief Humming Bobbar talked about recording songs

95% of what you need is already in your DAW, the other 5% is mostly creative stuff not included. Sure there are better reverbs/EQ's/Compressors on the market but I think they are only situationally better(except really good natural reverbs). Led Zeppelin II was recorded all over the place using what was on hand and mixed in 2 days on some basic console in NY and it sounds lovely to this day.

GAS (PAS?) is hell of a drug. After 20 years I barely see any new plugin worth buying or even trying. I have tons of plugins and I'm using only a few now. Even that I'm working on variety of genres. But I had to go through the path of aquiring all those plugins to finaly learn that 80% of them are useless (or are useless for specific genres). Myths, legends and misinformation doesn't help, epsecially now in the era where everyone on YT is a mixing/production expert.

The thing is, Paul, that the technology has improved massively in the last few years, and plugins are emerging which are far better than previous incarnations. Case in point is noise reduction - AI has transformed how effective this can be - examples are Accentize and Hush. Remix software is also improving in leaps and bounds, eg Acon Remix. And in the console field, Acustica has also developed its tech far beyond what it used to be - examples are Mystic and the new Salt EQ. So while I agree with your general point, that no-one needs more versions of the same old thing, it is unarguable that new tech has improved the quality of plugins enormously, and thus made redundant a lot of the older ones. Which means I agree with you that more is less - new plugins like the above reduce the amount of the old plugins you need.

I really wish that when I tried to learn mixing someone had sat me down and said "Ian, the most important thing you can do early on is just sit and listen to stuff through your monitoring system. Try to recognise what a well mixed track sounds like. However many frequency zones you decide are real try to learn what too much or too little in each of those zones sounds like. And for gods sake if there's a big glaring problem in one of them try to fix that first because that's the big apparent problem that's making your mix sound bad primarily. There's zero point in understanding how all the cool mixing tricks are done if your ears can't tell you where the problems are because you'll just misapply the techniques in the wrong places." I'd have saved a fortune, but I probably wouldn't have listened because that sounds boring and is hard work whereas buying plugins is fun and there's virtual knobs you can fiddle with.

I feel like my ears have only started properly IDing things in the last wee while, it's been a gradual thing and because it's taken so long to properly hear things I've been fighting with my debut EP for ages. Recently as I'm now hearing better I've found myself working much faster, solving issues easier and nearing a point where I'm happy enough to send it off to mastering pretty soon I hope

Dope video but it over-generalizes why people buy lots of plugins. I, personally, just like to acquire additonal dsp's to add to my collection, and have the financial means to not be adversely affected by doing so. Plugins buying is a much cheaper habit, comparatively than having a shoe, clothes, food, gambling, etc spending habit. As with anything, the issues isn't the spending itself, but the financial effects of spending...also,the decsion-making process of tool choice, in a session, is seperate issue. You can have a very limited collection, and still be indecisive to tool choice.

Luckily, (sort of) my computer is 10-12 years old, and doesn’t run many newer plug-ins. I have a few that I like, and the rest are just stock Logic Pro X plug-ins. What I prefer to do, is reamp, either though other speakers/amps, or just through the many guitar pedals I have kicking around.

When I mix vocals I always forget about the dubs/adlibs. Mix the whole thing send it to the artist. Artist: where are the tags. Me: 😯😬 Just to highlight how dialed in we get staring at the tree... that we can't see the forest.
