*I bought an 11mm f 1.4 and didn't know it was an ultra wide BUT I do a lot of talking head videos like what you're doing in this Video and I use a sigma 16mm f1.4 but I was thinking of getting a Sony G Lens which is 15mm f 1.8 and out of curiosity would I notice that much of a difference as one is a 16mm and the other is 15mm. What would be another good alternative to a 16mm APS-C lens.*
@SamHolland

Do you have a full frame camera? Honestly you wouldn’t notice a difference between 15-16 without comparing the two directly next to each other. It all depends on what style you like. I usually film these talking head videos at 24mm but this time I went with the 18mm so that you could see the lenses on my desk. I prefer the 24 so I’ll be going back. But for other things like the shot of me looking close at my screen, the 18 was perfect.

@@SamHolland I have a FX30 & ZV-E10. The ZV I use the 11mm f1.8and on my FX30 I'm using the Sigma 16mm f1.4. I just usually do Talking Heads but don't need the 11mm as it's an ultra wide and I don't want that in my Room. So other then the Sigma what I was looking at the 15mm G Lens for the APS-C. What other lens could you recommend for the APS-C ; as I was thinking of the 15mm G lens.

The problem is: you use different lenses for different type of shoots... So run-and-gun I use mostly with my Lumix 20-60mm because it is light, and I will film with the 24-105 F4 when I need more reach or want extra stabilization. However: if I shoot greenscreen, or music video, or portrait, or any controlled situation, or in low light I will pick any of the 35/50/85mm F1.8. Next lens? Might be the 70-300 for the next vacation, or the 24mm, or the 18mm... Lenses are also an addition I'm afraid. All filmed on my S5iiX or S5 ofcourse 🤛

One of the things I miss from when I shot 16mm film is how great the 8X to 10X zooms were for that format. The Canon 8-64mm T2.4 was really nice. And, that was the same lens they used on The Hurt Locker. Then, I really loved the Zeiss lenses, which were the 10-100mm T2 and 12-120mm T2.2 because they covered such a great range. Best part is they were more affordable than Super 35mm zooms of similar zoom range. Of course, those lenses were part of my college equipment available for us to “rent” out for our projects. However, I am very happy with my set of PL cinema lenses these days. I have a good set of Zoom Lenses. They do require me to swap lenses as they don’t have that 8X or 10X range. But they are Parfocal and have minimal to zero focus breathing. Plus, at T2.8 they are pretty fast for cinema zooms. If I need more light then I go to my cinema primes, which are from the same brand and match wonderfully. Only challenge there is that the lenses have different outer diameters from the zooms so I need to swap the back on my matte box. Fine trade off however for the benefits of the primes. Also, the primes cover VistaVision and that’s really nice should I move up to that sensor size. But then I have my still photography lenses. Different beasts all together. I love being able to use an adapter to put my vintage lenses on to the still camera. And, I’ve been shooting film again and doing some comparisons with the same lens on the film camera and the digital thanks to using the adapter. It’s also great to find those improvements that still lenses have made with better close focus distances and faster apertures. The vintage lenses are smaller and lighter ironically. But, fully manual and no electronics. The modern still lenses communicate with the camera and do great autofocus and lens control from the camera body, while still having an iris ring and focus ring for manual control. The cinema lenses I have still have no electronics for camera communication. I’m in communication with the manufacturer about getting /i Technology into future lenses, but that will drive up cost. Worth it for lens metadata. But, it does come to experience and knowing your needs. Again, I’d love for a more singular zoom for my cinema purposes that had 10X range like back with Super 16. But, that gets heavier, longer, and more expensive for Super 35. And, not to mention VistaVision/Full-Frame it is even pricier and bulkier. But then, it’s nice when a cinema camera has a Super 16mm Window and you could find those old S16 Zooms for cost online. Accepting S16 unique look is worth it for that range to speed up shooting in run and gun scenarios.

Great video Sam! I believe that you can do everything with just one lens (well almost everything) when your budget is tight. I have used just one cheap 50mm for 95% of my photography/video work for most of my 25 year old career. When you can't afford to buy multiple lenses you adapt and make what you already have work for you. It might be harder sometimes but it is totally doable.

Don't forget the questions: How fit are you? How long or far do you need to carry your gear? How shaky is your grip? How much warning do you get before having to take a shot? How shy are you? How long do you like to keep using stuff? With all cameras and lenses being good these days, little things make a big difference (size, weight, stabilization, focus speed). Thanks

I love and use all of my lenses especially the different prime lenses from Sigma Art or the 85mm Sony G-Master even if I don't use this so often- but when I use it I enjoy it. But actually I use mostly the 24-70 Sigma Art f 2.8 DGDN and probably I won't need the FE 4/70-200 MACRO G OSS II because I don't use this focal length so much, but it is fun to use it and I won't miss it. But if I see the amount of money I invested in lenses and cameras over the last 5 years other people would buy a nice car for I ask myself is it necessary? Yes it was for my health because photography is my hobby and passion and when I go outside I really get my mind clear and come down and I enjoy it still and I do it since 1994 since I bought my first camera a Canon AE1 that I still have today. :-)
