Micro Four Thirds users rejoice! I have found the cheapest speedbooster on the PLANET and it actually has good optics. Find out why I use the Viltrox NF-M43x instead of the EF-M2 and saved hundreds of dollars over the much more expensive Metabones speedboosters. #MetabonesKiller

MFT AF doesn't suck for photography, it's actually pretty darn snappy! I think vloggers should point this out anytime they harp on about this 'terrible focusing' on MFT cameras, because for stills shooting they are as fast as any other. And the likes of the EF-M2 are just fine for that. Not everyone using MFT is using it for video. But I do like the idea of using Nikon glass, especially older, cheaper lenses, I personally have no problem manual focusing for either stills or video, but it should be made clear. MFT AF for stills is actually excellent.

So I have bought the adaptor, after watching this video and reading the coments. And here is my experience. The build quality is ok, it can adjust to focus to infinity, also makes my Sigma 18-35 parafocal. But unusible when wide open. It is very soft and have that blooming fx. I am buying fast lenses so I can shoot at wide open and this speedbooster takes that option away. You do get good results only when you close it to a 2-2.5 position. Had to return it.
@AlexMinor
@AlexMinor 3 жыл бұрын
Most of the time I’d shoot with it maybe 1 click on the aperture. I shoot mostly controlled environments so I don’t have to deal with blooming and flares much

literally the metabones kept me from going to a M4T setup, I didnt want to redo lenses. I got the Viltrox for my now BMPCC and its been fantastic, I use a Metabones at work because its their money, and while nicer and feels better, I got mine for $80....vs $650. Even if Metabones was $199 it would be a pass, at $150 for what I see it does?? Then I buy it over Viltrox. But I compared them both....no difference at all. Those that claim they do are freeze framing zooming in 2000% and pixel fucking. If you do that, you need to go back to the basics of film because you think the camera makes the creative and not the other way around. The money I saved I got a prosumer field recorder AND prosumer Boom Mic. Now my stuff literally can go to festivals if I wish because I have proper audio and footage thanks to RAW and ProRes.

I was just testing a Nikon with a Viltrox today and I saw no problem with sharpness and image quality generally, fit, ease of use, anything. At this point the only advantage you can get with any Metabones IMHO is if you get the .64 Ultra (ETA oops I meant the XL). You get a 1.28 crop factor so that's some more light and resolution. Other than that, zero reason not to go with the Viltrox. There's some crap adapters out there but Viltrox is solid quality.

Have you compared the speed boosters for quality?. I think that if you don't compare quality then you are only talking about price. Could you make a video showing the difference by shooting the same thing with the metabones and the cheap one. There is a guy(I can't find his channel again) who has 2 identical cameras and compares lenses and adapters and filters and everything. He has the 2 cameras rigged side by side so he can shoot at the same time to make accurate comparisons. Thanks for the video. I didn't know about that very cheap speed booster.

There are other videos out there that do this. Gerald undone has a great one comparing the Metabones and the EF-M2. The glass in the EF-M2 and the NF-M43x is very similar but I think the NF-M43X is a little bit sharper.

Are you or anyone else having problems with the Viltrox speedbooster or adapter with the GH5? I have the GH5s and the Viltrox EF-M2 and I can't turn on IBIS. It's greyed out and won't let me alter it. I've tried the newest firmware upgrade for Viltrox (3.5) and also downgrading it to 2.3. It was 3.2 when I first got it. Frustrating as hell. @@AlexMinor yeah I wont miss it. But let's say that since its a manual focus lens after being adapted, I'll have to either handhold it or set it on a tripod so that I am able to focus. I wont be able to do that on a gimbal or any other stabilizer unless I add some sort of follow focus system. But still, for still shots or for artistic shots using an old f1.2 lens on the speedbooster would be crazy dof.

Hi, if you use this speedbooster combined with for example the Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 how do you set the aperture? Because you can't do that on the lens it self right? And since there are no electronics in the speedbooster you can't control it by the camera itself right?

Great review! I have a cheapo nikon speedbooster, and it works great EXCEPT for the horrible purple flare right in the middle when you get direct light. So i got 2 questions about this one: 1) Is it sharp when lenses are wide open? 2) Is the flaring bad? Thanks in advance!
@AlexMinor
@AlexMinor 4 жыл бұрын
The answer to both questions is "depends on the lens"
@jdsmedia
@jdsmedia 4 жыл бұрын
@@AlexMinor none of my lenses flare much on their own. So assuming i have pretty controlled lenses, does it introduce any flaring? And the efm2 ii is pretty soft wide open with any lens, hence my question.
@jdsmedia
@jdsmedia 4 жыл бұрын
My Speedbooster XL is super sharp wide open with any lens that is obviously sharp wide open like my Sigma 18-35. It also does not introduce any extra flaring whatsoever.
@AlexMinor
@AlexMinor 4 жыл бұрын
@@jdsmedia this speedbooster is sharper wide open than the efm2. Completely wide open you might lose some contrast when shooting directly into bright lights, but taking the aperture down just one click will fix that in most cases. That's the only issue I've ever run into with this piece of kit.

I think I have a better answer for why Nikon doesn't have allot of electronic adapters. Historically, Canon has easier circuitry to deal with when it comes to lenses and converting. This is why Sigma, Tamron, and other third parties create lenses for Canon mounts faster. Also the EOS (EF-S) mounting system came before the Nikon DX system. That 3 year gap gave Canon (as a system) an advantage of having 3rd parties establish other products for their mount (Metabones and Viltrox have been working for a while). It just makes sense to me considering how technology needs to be broken in by the masses before becoming a solid product. Nikon, despite its great dynamic range and strong full-frame line-up over Canon, they are not strong where it matters in the market. Sony may just purchase Nikon as a result.

Also the it was only more recently that Nikon started putting auto focus motors into their lens. Older Nikon AF lens used a motor built into the camera bodies to focus the lenses. I think Nikon lens have to large of a variety of focusing methods but the diaphragm actuation has always been mechanical. As I understand it Canon lens went to an electronic diaphragm control when they went to electronic auto focus(FD to EF evolution), which means canon EF lens must have a chip to work. I could be wrong here though?
@branbroken
@branbroken 2 жыл бұрын
Even ignoring electronics, think vintage lenses, nikon is always trouble to adapt purely due to the flange distance, its just more difficult for companies to produce suitable adapters that work optically adding the cost and complexity of electronic signaling on top of that was just one more nail. Bottom line is theres very little profit in somthing expensive to manufacture that would have such a limited market.

Got the Viltrox for GH5 and sigma 18-35mm. But when I then connect my new Sigma 18-35mm to the adapter the GH5 displays "LENS ATTACHMENT FAILED. PLEASE MAKE SURE THE LENSE IS ATTACHED CORRECTLY". I updated the firmware and tried again many times and still have the same issue. I also tested it on another Panasonic camera G80 with the SIGMA Lense and receive the same error. Returning it and getting Metabones. Have you ever heard of this issue with Viltrox. Thanks.
