My first tripod was from a pawnshop in 1985. And it served me well for 20 years. Travelled around the world with me and finally broke. Upgraded to Manfrotto and couldn’t be happier…spent money to protect my gear and don’t regret it.

Kobie, I too have a bunch of tripod stories and I agree with you get a good one. The rubber grip is intended for use in extreme cold were touching a bare hand on bare metal is not so nice. Even the best brand name tripods can fail. I was out in Wyoming doing some railfan photography when a gust of wind came up and blew over my Bogan (Manfroto) 3221 with a 500 mm lens and camera body on it. I Bogan and also use Gitzo tripods because they last for decades.

Also worth avoiding tripods with tactile silicon rubber grips as the material has a tendency to go sticky over time if stored in a warm place (like almost everyone does). Sponge grips deteriorate also, but typically take a lot longer.

I too have gone from the cheap tripods to more expensive. I could have saved some money if I had not been so cheap to start with. One tip I learned from another photographer if your tripod does not have one of it's legs padded was to use tubular foam pipe insulation around the upper portion of the legs. Very cheap, I covered all three legs. It also gives a little padding for carrying over the shoulder. Makes it much more comfortable to carry during those winter excursions.

A disadvantage of the twist locks on the Benbow legs is that you cannot see if they are done up tight. With the lever type (or quick release) locks on the Cameron they are visibly either on or off. BTW, we could see that your _"Some no name thing"_ tripod @10:05 actually has the name "Vielknov" @12:18. I've never heard of them though.

Exactly, the Vielknov is some random brand from Amazon. Basically no name. Ain't nobody heard of them lol. I hear you about the twist locks vs quick levers. Very valid point.

..I carry two tripods outdoors - "Benro A2980T", it is extremely stable... but when I have to go further, I use the light "3 Legged Thing - Leo", I am extremely satisfied with both :)

Your Cameron looks like a twin of the Dolica tripod I got from Amazon ten years ago. I'm still quite happy with it, though like you I don't think I'd trust it with a huge heavy lens. I have used it with one of those cheapo 500mm/1000mm $80 lenses, and it did support that plus my K-30 with no problem. :)

Last year I came across a Manfrotto 055 pro with a ball head in a second hand shop for $120.00 CDN. I definitely grabbed it for that price and use it for my big 600 Sigma lens.

Great topic.. looking for a good tripode for up coming Solar Eclispe. Looking for a good gimble to hold the 150-450FA. Or the 600mm to shoot moon pics .

I went for small and light, but still sturdy. So peak design aluminum tripod with a benro 2 head. Not cheap, but I don’t think I’ll need to buy another one ever (unless I pop for carbon fiber) After all that I use the monopod more than the tripod, and shoot free most of all

I had the same problem. I had a cheap tripod that I hardly ever used. When I put my newly purchased K70 on it the pan head decided to break off completely at the pivot, luckily I caught the camera before it the concrete. The pan head was actually made of an alloy but was still cheap. I ended up buying a Neewer tripod with a ball head, also with the monopod adaptation. Very good value for money. Moral of the story, buy the best you can afford or save up.
