On behalf of Danes, I apologise for those who react badly to (presumably justified) critique of Denmark. Not our finest character trait. I cringe every time I see youtube comments with people reacting wildly out of proportion to reasonable critiques (not just this channel, but others too). We really need to get better at accepting criticism. Especially from foreigners living here, who have an outside view of our country and thus valuable insight into how it can be improved. Not to mention, they go through many more hoops of bureaucracy and difficulties than us natives; of course they're going to have more negative experiences and input on how things could be better. I'm glad you're enjoying life here and have settled in our country, now also your country. Keep criticising us as needed; maybe we'll eventually learn not to react so badly.

Accurate video. I would like to add/expand a little bit on the "dont be late" and "dont small talk". It can be summed up simply as: "Dont waste my time!". This applies to any aspect of society, basically. At work, dont waste time in a meeting with 5 other people by not having your presentation ready, if you want to beg for money in the street or try to sign me up for UNICEF, that's fine. But be direct about it! I dont want to hear a sob story. I want to know how much money you want me to let go off. That's it! The other thing that will really piss off a Dane is unconstructive criticism and generalizations without nuance! Danes are very direct and they do like to complain, but they are generally pretty thick skinned too. As long as you make a point as to what can be improved, complaining is generally accepted. It's perfectly fine to say stuff like "I dont like this pastry, it's too buttery for me" or "I like basketball more than football because so few goals are scored in football". What will piss off a Dane is comments like: "Danish politicians are so racist" or "I haven't tasted it, but I'm sure I wont like it!". I'm getting angry just typing it!!

Fun video! I have also been here 12 years! I messed up on the cake thing at my first job. I really had my feelings hurt that no one made me a cake (even though we talked a lot about that it was my birthday in the coming days), but they must have been thinking the same of me! (Where's our cake!) A couple of other things that really piss Danes off: 1) Standing in the bike lane. 2) Not putting the little grocery separator bar down between your goods and those behind you when you go shopping.

Haha, nice video. But yeah, you definitely hit the nail on the head with that last one. Danes can definitely complain about high taxes (and I know a few who love to do so), but if you as a foreigner dare to voice even a slight criticism of the social contract... oh my, hell breaks loose.

Danes are big time moochers, they expect you to provide booze on your 30th unmarried (pepper) birthday too. When I was married in Nordjylland I was told it was a custom to bring a bottle of booze for the priest to rehearsal, which he seemed glad to receive.

Hahahaha, you nailed it on the head. However, as always there are always a few exceptions now and then. Many younger Danes are not nearly as inapproachable like some of us older farts hahaha. Since I have lived and worked around the world half my life, I am not so Danish anymore regarding personal space etc. but I definitely recognize all the points brought up here. It is especially true that most Danes are very sensitive to criticism. As a Dane having lived and worked abroad for so many years, I don't mind criticize Denmark and when I do, they still get upset even though I am Danish hahahaha. Really good video and all points were perfectly described.

The dog thing is.. yeah. I mean, you can ask, but just don't suddenly touch someone's dog without asking, also for your own sake. I had a shepherd mix and he was.. occasionally vehicle aggressive and since I have him on a leash, that aggression will occasionally turn on me (as the closest thing for him to reach since I'll hold him back from attacking the random moped that's really the thing he wants to scare away) and this lady. So one day I was walking along a fairly busy street for training him to get used to vehicles (it was supposed to be just a short distance for him) and this lady just... sat down in front of him to pet him and I just... that 25 kg of teeth, lady! You don't know him! He's only occasionally aggressive toards certain kinds of vehicles, bt how the fuck would she know? Even a normally docile dog could have reacted aggressive in that situation! Ugh, yeah, it's been at least a decade and I'm still upset XDDD So, moral of the story, teach children to ask before touching people's dogs. Most people will be flattered that you think their dog is so cute you want to pet it.

I am from Southern Italy and generally don't fancy when strangers want to talk to me. I don't mean I bother, but it is not my cup of tea. If I am travelling alone or spending time into a bar, I don't mind if strangers come, talk to me and share their feelings. It can be very friendly and nice. But if for some reasons I want to stay alone, I MUST stay alone and do my business 😅 also, I am keen to respect people's private space. Southern italians usually do LOVE chatting with strangers and acting like childhood friends. Always said I was born in the wrong country 😂

I think it's pretty common for people to get defensive when foreigners criticize their countries. At least most of the critiques of Denmark are pretty inoffensive, unless you start talking about our history. Personally the one thing where I can feel the irrational tendency to be defensive about my nation of birth is the royal house. There's absolutely no logical reason for having a monarchy in the 21st century, but I find myself trying to rationalize it anyway... I mean, sure, they have no freedom of expression nor right to vote, are forced to be of a certain religion and are constantly under surveillance, but I still think we treat the royals well enough that Denmark can be excused this medieval institution...
