It's ironic a lot of these guys get put away for not being able to follow societal rules and end up in a place that forces more rules than ever on them by their fellow inmates.

I'm Hispanic and I'll never forget when I went to jail and didn't know where to sit at breakfast so I looked around the pod of 98 men and saw one older black man sitting by himself reading his paper. I walked over and asked if I could sit down at the open chair at his table and he looked at me like I should have known I was welcome. He was a religious man and I know a lot of men find god in the joint but I believe this man was legit to treat me like that in front of other grown ass men. I look back all the time and realized I was lucky to walk out with only a spider bite after 13 months. I was 18 in Virginia and I don't speak spanish. It's how you carry yourself.

I saw badger getting aggravated when Herc touched his shoulder with his finger a couple of times, and you could see that Badger was processing it and just letting it pass cause this was not a disrespect situation. I guess that prison stuff gets wired into your DNA, and its incredible to see how badger took it and put it on the table as a joke instead of holding it back and hold resentment. Happy for him that he could go through this transformation and stay outside after being locked up with savages for his whole life.

I remember that exact feeling of not knowing where to sit on my first day at chow. I still have nightmares of being trapped after 17 years. It’s not like you’re going home after a shit day at work, you are trapped with no light at the end of the tunnel. It’s a feeling of despair that you can’t imagine until you’re in it (you’re completely devastated by your situation). It’s literally a living hell of fear, anxiety, paranoia, and self loathing. I made it through because I was young, but I’d likely kill Myself if I ever had to go back for an extended period of time. I’m just not willing to live through it.

enjoy the channel! After doing 23 + on a life sentence in Texas it’s difficult to explain to those who have never served any time what’s it really like in prison. even after so many years the explanation process doesn’t come easy. your channel does the explaining for me. I’m a bone hard wood, but it’s still great to see you reaching the level of success you’ve attained since your release. Honor and integrity knows no color, but is recognized by all. mutual respect is something most will never understand, but us ex convicts seem to practice it more than the segment of society that claims this enlightened title. 18 years old never had been incarcerated. Hit the chow hall to eat my first county meal. I get my tray and start looking for a place to sit. I find a table with no one at it. I sit and start eating. The table next to me was a northern table. I dint realize I was in there section. Two dudes sit down staring at me. One dude said to me, you get your mattress stamped? I say nothing staring back. The other dude says, for movie night. I knew they were fuckin with me. I say nothing and just get up and move to another table. The second you get incarcerated everything changes. If you’re not smart, aware, and a little mean you’ll get ate up. The next table I sat at was my race. They told me that if I said anything to them it was bad. In fact I said nothing and moved. It showed I’m not stupid. No such thing as movie night in jail. Especially needing a mattress stamped. It also showed I had been here before and knew the politics. Witch I hadn’t. I was innocent so I didn’t stay long. But that lesson will forever be ingrained in my memory.

You guys need to find a guy who spent some time in military prison and see how different it is, from what I've always seen and heard it's a lot of role calling in the yard and marching in formation to "job sites" where you spend the day digging ditches along side the roadways or working in the facility as a secretary or a janitor.

First Last I talked with a old guy who was a enlisted man in the late 50s early 60s who worked as a guard whenever he was ordered to do so, and he said that one guard was assigned to 8 prisoners and the guard's only defense was a Winchester "trench gun" and since it was the early 60s he didn't have a radio so he was alone in a rural area with prisoners digging ditches in the hot sun and he was always scared that they might one day rush him and steal his weapon and break out, definitely a lot different than civilian prison and by what you said it seems like better treatment

@boyscout_86

Someone usually gonna school you to the house rules. Remember everyone trying to keep down "stupid" incidents between other groups. DONT just go sit anywhere even if no one is there. Its more than just territory or race... a rikers thing was you'll hear some say dont sit on iron tables for example cause that mean you ride that iron horse. Like Badger said there is always some sorta changes. You come in settle in your hut, chill at your gate and by then someone gonna let you know what it is. Shit eat standing if thats the case til someone break the rules down to you.

I used to be the toast guy in the joint and I was the only one who spent more time to make the toast brown instead of just warm slightly crispy bread. One day an older guy was asking for the toast man and I got worried he didn't like the toast but he did and soon people realized I was the toast man. Doing good things like this in prison can grant you access to resources otherwise unavailable and just overall better treatment from other inmates.
