Love your videos, I was drafted in the 2nd round outta high school in 1978. Even at 6'4 & 225 I was "soft"....at my first minor league spring camp, the Director of Player Personnel came up to me and asked "How much was your signing bonus"?...when I told him he said "What did you do, eat it all"?..Yikes, welcome to Pro Ball!!!

I had my share of negative baseball experiences involving coaches or teammates yelling and screaming at mistakes. Something about Okanagan baseball coaches maybe but for the most part, they were assholes. Intimidation and fear never made anyone play better. The best coaches I had were the ones that made everyone feel confident and relaxed on the field. The coaches that yelled and screamed never had any success.

If you've clearly made an error, I agree with you. No reason to scream or yell or get mad about it. But if it's an issue of not hustling or trying, then yeah. You deserve some talking-down to. In Matt's case, the pitching coach probably felt like his doulble-shuffle was a lack of effort. He mentioned how the next batter got on by a single, and another batter after that also got on, but then they finally completed the final out and won the game. Here's the thing: The reason the pitching coach got pissed, is not only because he may have felt it was a lack of effort, but also because his pitcher had to throw another entire inning's worth of pitches and got his pitch count way up on the guy's arm because of it. It probably affected his plans for the rotation in the next few upcoming games. It's spring training, so the pitching coach is probably really limiting pitch counts as he gradually ramps it up towards the middle, then the end of spring training so they're fully ready and in shape for Opening Day. And of course, if it's the last out, the pitching coach REALLY doesn't want to make a pitching change just to get that last out. It's awkward AF to do that, and also throws out an entire day of rest of someone else's arm. So yeah. That little extra hippity-skio that allowed Upton on base, and subsequently more batters and more.putches, probably threw a monkey wrench into the pitching coach's plans. Not saying there was no lack of effort in that play Matt described. It's was most likely a little hiccup of a mistake. Maybe trying to get a better grip on the ball, or lost the timing of his footwork. But from the perspective of that coach, he probably didn't see it that way at all.

When I was in little league I was never allowed to swing... I was a runt (I was only 5' 98lbs when I graduated HS, I didn't start growing till I was almost 19, lol) My strike zone was so small I literally got walked 95% of the time... the one and only time I took a swing at the ball it rolled about six inches in front of the plate and I made it to first because the catcher couldn't find the ball... I think he was confused, lol... BUT, I was told "Don't Ever #$@ing Do That Again!" I was kinda sad because I didn't have the abilities to play like the other kids... but everyone treated me like I was their little brother and looked after me and always encouraged and praised me. It would have been the perfect opportunity for anyone of dozens of kids and parents in my league and other visiting teams to bully the runt who couldn't keep up with the big kids... glad the few years I got to play ball ended up being a pleasant experience because it could have been awful had I been made fun of.

I think so.. I started puberty at 15.. everything I ate was farm grown or harvested on our property... no artificial hormones or steroids.. just a little fella... My mom is only 4' 9" ... and my dad was only 5'7" at my fittest I ended up at 5' 7" and weighed a solid 135lbs. I'm 42 now and wish I was still a fit 135, lol

Matt i have a 10 yr old son who is a baseball freak! Your channel is so insightful and clean i feel good about letting him check out your content. I was a good baseball player that never had anyone to push me out of my comfort zone and always remember that. That said my son lacks self confidence so ive made a commitment to give him all the support and tools he needs to persue his passion. We live in SW Florida so we work on something for baseball everyday. He played up as a 9 yr old this year for majors on our little beach team. Everyone but him knows his swing is the best on the team. I love him so much and just wish he would be more confident in himself. Batting practice hes lights out, live game, very timid to swing. I will continue to build his confidence and pray he still loves baseball the way he does now at my age of 48. I still hit in the cage when i can. Love baseball! Thanks again for a great channel...

Wow, Matt. I honestly believe, even if I had been phenomenal as a young player and basically nothing would have gotten me in trouble, I wouldn’t have lasted a DAY in pro ball. Had that coach said that to me, he would have been flat on his ass before he even had a chance to stand back up straight again.

I never played pro, I was a basketball guy but played JV baseball for a pretty good small college program. One night we’re playing USC’s JV at Dedeaux Field. I’m in left field and, with one out, ranged to my left and made a pretty good running catch near the fence. But the very next batter pops one straight up into the lights. I lose it and wind up barehanding it on one hop a foot from my body when it should’ve been the third out. So, the NEXT guy whacks a grounder to third that takes a bad hop and knocks out our 3B. As we gather around, our very young coach - later the athletic trainer for an MLB team - asks him “ are you OK?” Yeah. “How many fingers?” Two. “Who are we playing?” SC. “You remember seeing Weber butcher that fly ball a minute ago?” 😂

I used to have this issue when i would shuffle to many times and guys were beating my throws out but I like straight up couldn't get my timing without it... I figured it out though and changed my entire arm delivery. Always thought that was some weird psychological thing that I couldn't not shuffle...

I did that when I used to play too. I hated the coach I played for it kind of killed my passion for playing. I was only in high school. He got so angry at me. I was only like 16 or so. I took two shuffles, maybe even three at 3rd base and finally threw it over, the runner was safe. I dont know why I did that.

Oddly enough, I can see Miguel Cabrera being pissed and/or maybe saying something back. Once, in his early years (still in his early 20's) when he was in a slump. the hitting coach went to him to try and work on it, but Cabrera told him in no uncertain terms: "There's nothing you can teach me about hitting, so back off!" I'm paraphrasing, but that's essentially what he said. Come to find out, he was right. Although, I'm of the opinion that no matter how good I am at something, there's always something I can learn. Cabrera's career pretty much speaks for itself. So, what can you say?

I had my coach in legion ball say a similar thing. I’m a catcher, so I had a pop fly behind the dish. Pretty routine, but I sort of stumbled and completely F it up. Totally my fault. Get up next inning and have the classic makeup for it homerun. Thought that got me out of it. Nope. Gets in my ear and says “you drop another f’n pop up, you’ll never get on my field again. 😂

I still haven’t found what I presume is the tobacco episode. (Based on what you are doing with your mouth in that clip) at least I hope that a tobacco episode LOL. I am reminded of the time we were playing in Arkansas and Mark Grace’s brother was one of the 3 umpires (we made him show ID lol) Our right fielder had so much chewing tobacco in his mouth that he literally could not close it. (Most of us dipped or chewed but we were discreet). Anyone within a 200 yard radius can see this in his mouth. So the umpire turns around and tells him to spit it out. (First he says “spadix whadjxhdh ot” while attempting to say “spit what out?” So he throws about a pound and a 1/2 of tobacco on the ground, then when the umpire turns around he immediately picks (most of) it back up and throws it back in his mouth. A few plays later the ump looks back at him and just shrugs and says “whatever man.”

How does playing in those Major League Exhibition games as a minor leaguer affect your eventual MLB Debut mentally or emotionally? Does your MLB Debut feel any different since you have already played several games in the same uniform in ML Parks and crowds? Or does it make it an easier transition? Or is your ML Debut still nerve-wracking because it actually counts? I always wonder about the frustration of long time minor leagures who have never made it to a Major League game, but have put on the Major League uniform in an ML park for exhibition games that don't count.

I remember my buddy getting a few tips from some of the "rich" friends of the minor league programs. After hitting his first homerun and going 4 for 4 with 2 put outs that game a random guy walked up to him and I while we were talking and handed me an envelope with $1000 in it.

I'm a stocky Italian kid so coaches never thought I was fast so I literally had to steal bases against the coaches signs to show them I was wicked fast. Theyd be pissed that i wemt,without the sign and that I didnt tell them,i was fast... How about you open your eyes?! Id always get moved from 3rd to center after that too lol

2007 Padres pitching coach was Darren Beasely. He was a great pitching coach, led the Padres to an MLB best team ERA of 3.70 that year. In 2010, the Padres had the best team era again at an astounding 3.07. For some perspective, the Padres team era was 4.87 the year before he got the job in 2003. Great pitching coach but I can't really say I agree with his actions in this instance. It's a teachable moment for a coach to use what happened to instill the importance of relevant fundamentals like a quick release, etc. There's something to be said for acclimating a young player to experiences like this as well but I just don't get why the pitching coach was doing it? It's a lack of leadership from the coaching staff as a whole imho.

I was playing semi pro ball when I was 17 or 18 always got along fine with the guys didn’t really start much just pinch hits ect. Well I got the start for the last game of the year my parents were there so that was kind of cool. I’ve always tried to be respectful so I went to the manager and said thanks for the start today the looked at me and said shut the fuck up and get your gear on. So I grabbed my catchers gear and quickly got out to the bench. Just to add insult to injury I ended up getting run at the plate so fun day.

I've got a bit of an odd question. So obviously major league has legit games in spring training and practice before that but do minor league teams do anything like that?

@@AntonelliBaseball Great coach, led the Padres to an MLB best team era that year at 3.70 and again in 2010 at an astoundingly low 3.07. Still, can't agree with his actions here. I get they have to break a young player in but uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Do starting pitchers get mad at a reliever who blows the game? Do your team mates get made if a player makes a mistake that costs them the game?

Got picked off 3rd in high school once. Every starter except me was senior, and I was a sophomore 2nd basemen. Anyways, I'm on 3rd, down by 1 to a good team in like the 4th or 5th inning. The pitcher totally caught me off guard and I got picked off. My coach stood there and didnt say a word for what felt like 30 seconds. I go to the dugout, and he walks down the 3rd base line and yells under his breath (but not really) "WHAT THE F*CK ARE WE DOING". Its alright though because later that game I would make up for my error and hit a game tying double. Anyways, next practice, coach had me "practice taking a smart lead" from 3rd for over an hour. Wasn't fun but wasnt that bad of a punishment either 😂😂

it’s cause it can hurt a minor league pitchers career cause it counts as a hit the pitching coach probably knew stuff like that happens and can hurt their pitchers careers

It's likely that the pitcher was on a pitch count, or maybe they wanted to get the pitcher confidence, or a myriad of other pitcher related references that pissed off the PC. Had it not affected the pitcher, meaning, had the rest of the inning gone down in order, the PC probably doesn't say anything. But, I'd be willing to bet that the PC felt it impacted the pitcher.
