Maybe Hollyleaf could have had her power if Jayfeather wasn’t loaded up with an entire X-Men Team’s worth or abilities. It’s clear as crystal that Jayfeather was the only one of the three with actual care put into him, so why even include his siblings? Just have Jayfeather be the single powerhouse against the dark forest and Lionblaze and Hollyleaf would just be background characters like they were meant to be.

I’ve been making jokes for years that they should have just gone ahead and given Hollyleaf teleportation. The Erins don’t like writing traveling books, most of us don’t like reading traveling books, so why not solve multiple problems at once? It’s not like there isn’t precedent for it in other stories; Akira Toriyama gave Goku Instant Transmission after the Freeza arc because he got tired of writing fights where everyone was waiting around for Goku to finally show up. Yes, it’s cheap, but it certainly makes getting characters where they need to be a lot easier. Plus, Hollyleaf being comically bad at hiding it from the rest of the Clan just writes itself.

I know it was the Erins no longer giving Firestar a meaningful role in the story until the end of OotS, but he just always acted done with everything after they moved to the Lake. To be fair, he had to deal with like, three prophecies at a young age, and even more with PoT and OotS. But he just always acted burnt out, y'know? Like, "Fiiiiine... I'll be the fourth cat if have to..."

Yeah as a long time reader of the series (was 11 years old when Into the Wild was published) and a big Firestar fan, it is very frustrating to watch him basically fade into the background as the books go on and listen to other fans either rag on or just dismiss him as being boring and basic . . . but then I also have to acknowledge the fact that if he did interfere more, or at least allowed to interfere more with the plot and helping out the new protagonists, it would actually break the story . . . and it doubles the frustration when it makes me think about that this is part of the reason why I have felt the series has been going steadily downhill and not really stopping since the Original Arc ended. Yes all stories have operate by some measure of suspension of disbelief in order to work (It why Hitchcock said that this is why people don't just call the police in horror/thriller stories), but I do think the later series of Warriors has had a serious problem of not having plots that won't immediately shatter if the characters act rationally, especially when former protagonists interacting with the new protagonist; they either make the situation inexplicability harder for really no reason or they just don't just get involved no matter what, even if it should be something that greatly concerns them. Hell this is why I have hard time with getting attached to new characters introduced in the later arcs as it is like "Well can't wait to see this character pushed to the background and not really contribute much for the rest of their life" or "I want to like you, but this story is not really selling me on you being the protagonist because its not giving me any reason to not be constantly thinking 'why can't the protagonists of past arcs just come in and fix this situation again? I mean a explanation that is not just simply they aren't the protagonists anymore . . . also that explanation is not lame as hell.'." Part of what frustrated me about Omen of the Stars as a Firestar fan is that, if the writers knew that he was the Fourth Cat and that this arc would be his swan song from the start, they should have just declared him the fourth cat outright and made him a POV character from The Fourth Apprentice onward; personally it might have made that arc more interesting to see events from his point of view. Vision of Shadows and the Broken Code seem to try and make it more balanced between the former protagonists and new protagonists, but I just don't think it works. Squrrileflight seems to make an effort to be proactive but then authors are like "No no. You'll upstage the new protagonists and your husband Bramblestar, after all he is totally Firestar successor and not you or anyone else . . . because." And Jayfeather seems to be kept around in the spotlight since he is popular and because "LOL he is the iconic grumpy snarky curmudgeon!" even though he really doesn't do much anymore. Bear in mind this is not a phenomena unique to Warriors. This stuff was one of the many issues that plagued the Post Return of the Jedi era of the Old/Legends Star Wars Expanded universe. But to name another series that gets around this problem well there is my other favorite/influential animal fantasy series that I grew up on: Redwall. Outside of a handful of books that made up mini arcs, every book was self contained and existed in a different era of history, thus the protagonists of those stories are allowed to stand on their own in a way. The only character that appears in all the books is Martin the Warrior. However he is only alive and the protagonist in a trilogy (Martin the Warrior, Mossflower and The Legend of Luke). He shows up in the prophetic vision of a book that takes place years before he was born and the rest of the series he is just a spirit guide. Sorry for the length and rambling of the comment. I'm all for new characters and new protagonists but I'm getting so tired of the old protagonists who had so much personality being shoved to the background and losing all of their characterization immediately after their arc is over. I don't get why the Erins think that old protagonists can't be in the books for more than one series. I would love to see another arc centered around Alderheart or Squirrelflight or Ivypool. Those were interesting characters with really interesting morals and motivations and their POVs were interesting to read. I just hate that they lose everything that makes them a decent character the moment their series ends. Especially when they have skills and experiences that could help the new protagonists.

This is what happens when you base an entire arc off one scene that takes place in the fifth book and decide to run with it with little thought. Think things through kids
