Thanks to Mobil 1™ motor oil for sponsoring this video. When changing the oil on your car, whether it's a project or your daily driver, it's important to go with a high-quality motor oil like Mobil 1 synthetic. Visit AutoZone to find the right high-quality Mobil 1 synthetic oil for you: bit.ly/39fBeVb
So you finally decided to get yourself a project car, great! But how exactly do you go about selecting, inspecting, and actually purchasing the right project car? How do you avoid getting ripped off? Chances are you will be going with a used car, so you need to be extra selective in what you decide to go with. First, remember to take your time. Next, watch the vid! We’ll talk about several options like VW, the Mazda Miata, and even a Jaguar XJ12. We also cover how to go about handling a car title and we’ll give you tips on topics like car mileage, how to check a VIN, inspecting a car, negotiating the price of a car, and by the end, you should be able to go out there and get yourself a sweet new ride. Welcome to Money Pit!

YES. I just realized this happened to mine a few months after purchasing my car. Holding my breath, I did a code scan and, lo and behold, NO CODES. That said, I think I'm going to swap the TPMS light bulb into the CEL location because TPMS doesn't work on my car anyway and I don't intend to put the time, effort, and money into making it work again.

A few additions: 1) Always insist that the car engine is cold when you arrive (a warm engine can hide any start-up issues) 2) Drive fast in a straight line and break super hard with your hands barely touching the wheel to determine if the car veers under hard breaking 3) If you are buying a car that delivers power to the front wheels, put the steering wheel into full-lock and drive in a circle (any clunking will indicate a likely fault CV joint) 4) If buying a performance car, feel and inspect the inside of the wheel wells for bits of rubber, to determine if they have been doing burnouts 5) Check the manufacturing date that is printed on all tires, as they may need replacing, even if they have full tread 6) Ask the seller if they are aware of any potential issues with the vehicle... sometimes they will tell you

My first car was a real dump. A 97 Mercury Sable with 275,000 miles. That shit leaked coolant so bad. It didn’t have a reservoir and only had a pressurized cap. what kills me on listings are folks who say "no tire kickers" when what they actually mean is dont look too closely at the car and don't ask me questions. Guess they don't want my money.
@phryge2468
@phryge2468 3 жыл бұрын
Nawh m8 - a tire kicker is someone that just shows up, kicks the tires, asks about it, then leaves. They’re called a tire kicker because they’re not showing up to find out about the car and buy it; they’re just curious about the car and want to check it out, without a true intention of buying. Saying “no tire kickers” is a fair statement to deter people that aren’t going to show up with cash in hand to make an offer if they would like to purchase the vehicle after a thorough inspection. A few additional things to consider. I've bought used cars in 3 different countries. I'm hesitant on Miatas at that age but your best bet for reliability is to make sure you get a manual transmission Honda or Toyota. Those will give you in general the best access to cheap parts and make sure you don't need as many cheap parts. Also, some additional things to check for, the edges of the door and inside trimming of the door for different color paint or pain dripping. Even if they say it's never been in an accident it doesn't make it true. There's nothing worse than a car that was in a wreck that somebody fixed themselves.

Thanks for doing the promo at the end. I usually skip through it if its at the beginning. And just to add to what was said in the vid, If the seller has no service history, thats an automatic 3-500 dollars off the asking price, unless the asking price is insanely low already. Js.

For much older cars, especially domestics, feel around the frame, floors, rockers, etc to check for rust and pull up carpets if easy to do, especially on convertibles. Rust repairs are very time consuming and very important to do right the first time so you wanna have as few surprises as possible.

AutoTempest Set range 100 mile radius from your zip code and price range from 0 to 3,500 Make sure you have dealers AND private sales checked (I think that's an option). I also believe you can break it down by title type, transmission, and mileage.

Bought my first ever car a couple of weeks ago. Nothing fancy, nothing terrible, a nice 2013 Ford Fusion. It *is* a salvage title tho. It got into a bad wreck and the owner decided to fix it up instead of junk it. He then proceeded to pass it around his family as the "teenager car" that all the kids drove. The teenage boy was apparently handy with his hands and had money to spare so he apparently fixed it up even more, put a speaker system in the trunk and whatnot. The car runs great, just heard back from the mechanic and the only things wrong with it are the windshield wipers dont work and it needs a new axel boot cuz one of em is leaking oil. That and the teenage girl ruined the tint but im fixing that myself
