If I'm rucking my 40 pound pack and climbing any kind of elevation, I'll be down to a tee shirt in 35 degree weather in about 20 minutes. I learned a long time ago to start cold and work your way warm.

This is true. Put on a warm base layer, like wool. Cover it with a wind blocker and hike. Open and close the zipper front to help when ventilation and heat adjustment is needed. When you stop, let it air out, or change to something dry that will hold warmth…easy.

I talked about this in my latest video - Hike Cold is what MyLifeOutdoors called it, I forget in what video - but it's true...don't hike in your down jacket.

You should have clothes that are a bit too cold to wear when stationary when you hike. So if you feel warm before you start you have to remove something. If you feel a bit cold you are likely fine..
