Love the video. I purchased my Z9 after the last firmware update. Shooting 8.k 60fps produces amazing HDR content. I love how I can get great quality video AND shoot pics at 47MP. It's unreal. On top of that, you get amazing auto-focus that sticks to your subject. I hope they keep expanding and growing the ecosystem.

I pre-ordered my Z9 at release, and have used it on about 15 weddings so far since then. I work with a number of second shooters who provide their own gear and I've found that the z9 in nlog or Nikon "neutral" picture profile cuts "fine" with Sony, although the Sony skin tones are really yellow by comparison. It cuts really nicely alongside blackmagic raw, so a pocket 4k or especially a 6k will do wonders as a second cam. It outclasses Panasonic footage pretty handily so it makes their stuff look kind of low budget by comparison. It works fine alongside canon clog and raw but canons normal picture profiles are a little too punchy to match unless you commit to that punchy look with the z9 also. Maybe that'll be helpful to anyone considering the z9 who is currently in another ecosystem.

I have the Z9, Z6ii and Z6. The Z9 is as good as everyone says. I would strongly argue the Z9 is the hybrid camera on the market overall, but individual needs may make another camera a better choice for people. The weight imho is not as big an issue I thought it would, because: 1. It holds a much larger battery, which is important for shooting video and avoids needing a large V mount battery or constantly carrying and swapping out smaller batteries 2. Overheating is not an issue, allowing long recording times 3. It just feels good in the hands CF Express Type B cards are a big advantage. More robust, higher capacity and better value. This point is under appreciated imho. The second cam issue is a fair point. If you use a Ninja V/V+, then you can get 12 bit ProResRAW and other codecs at 10 bit with the Z6 and Z6ii. But…they are not the same as a Z9 camera. They do the job, but… It appears a Z8 will be announced in the next couple of months, based on Nikon Rumors, which has a good track record. I think that will make a decent 2nd camera. But I’m particularly interested in what a Z6iii will offer. My best guess - and it’s only a guess - is that it is a year away from being launched.

I'm not a wedding photographer, but I really appreciate your historic perspective and balanced review. Nikon's loyal support of its older platforms is also important. My D850 SLR got a substantial firmware update years after release. My Z6 also got an update that transformed its capabilities. That made it a lot easier to commit to the Z9; now I own two.

Little tip for you. Now the Dynamic Range tests for the Z9 H265 are actually pretty good considering the sensor size, but NRAW, here is where its gets interesting. NRAW has 0 processing done to it in camera which means noise starts to appear pretty early on. The Imatest for NRAW actually shows the Dynamic range every so slighty under H265 imatest, but again NRAW has 0 processing done to it. Here is the interesting thing, NRAW is actually giving you a far better image and file than H265 and the Z9 with NRAW is actually giving the best results out of any hybrid camera on the market! and thats pretty nuts. It's pretty incredible you get an imagine that rivals 16+ stops of dynamic range cameras all in a hybrid body @47mp + you get the best over-sampled 4k 30/60 and the most detailed 4k 120 out of any camera right now. I cant wait for Sony, Canon, Nikon, and Panasonic to unveil their next gen sensors in a couple of years... we already know top end Canon cine cams will be min 20+ stops of DR. Here is a link to a much better article regarding imatest and NRAW dynamic range, the way the image holds up -5 - +5 and even 7 its seriously impressive for what it is. Oops links don't work.. google search: CINE D Nikon Z 9 N-RAW Lab Test (FW 3.00) - Rolling Shutter, Dynamic Range and Latitude

Matt I always wondered if you would ever review this camera, as it is the best hybrid out there right now. I don't say this because I shoot Nikon, it's just the naked truth. I am one who's waiting to see what's next as they build the ecosystem of the Z cameras and S lenses. Not sure if you were able to use the adapters for Nikon's F mounts, but it's great if you own F mounts, as there are some legendary glass that could be used on the Z9 for stills and video. Anyway, great video and thanks for taking time to create it, Nikon deserves it... Oh yeah, forgot to mention that the D90 was my first DSLR and at the time I was at a crossroad between Nikon and Canon, and I chose Nikon because of the video feature and because they began to use CMOS sensors in this body, which at the time CMOS sensors handled low light better than CCD that were in the bodies before the D90...

I agree completely Matt! One of the best cameras no doubt, but there's a small (yet very excellent) ecosystem for lenses and most notably cameras to support the Z9. The Nikon is the best camera I've ever used but man is it pricy, as there are nearly no used or budget options for native lenses. Hoping Tamron can bring more of their lenses to the Z mount in the future!

Lifelong Nikon shooter that nearly jumped ship about 20 times over the last 15 years due to Nikon's unwillingness to participate in the video world. I do have a Pocket 4K, but after seeing the Z9 unleashed I decided to jump into Z mount. They've made some really good cameras in the Z lineup. The 8-bit footage out of the Z6ii is actually much, much more usable than I first expected. It's quite flexible in post and I feel comfortable pushing some shots harder than I push 12-bit Braw. You do need to know how to grade it though. Certainly hoping Nikon does plug that Grand Canyon sized video gap between the Z6/7ii and the Z9 though with "lite" options in a smaller, lighter body. Would love to see some internal 10-bit or even internal N-raw at lower resolutions. Surely if the Z9 can handle 8K raw, the dual Expeed 6's can handle 4K or 6K

Great camera!! I use Canon R5C and I tried some RAW 12 bit shots in some weddings last year; I’m hoping to shot an entire film on RAW 12 bit, this season. Sony has the best line-up for cameras and lenses, but Canon has the best Top camera with great dynamic range, while Sony A1 can’t shot internal Raw and external PRO RES RAW is not 8K and can’t be edited in Da Vinci Resolve.

I am a Nikon shooter and I am a wedding photographer. I used their d500 for my filming of some highlight wedding moments. After some time I wanted to go into filmmaking more professionally. I tried z50, z6, and finally the Z6II. I was disappointed to find out that Nikon did not include dual card video record in z6II. This lack of a dual sd card recording led me to go full on the Panny side and purchase not only gh5s but also an S5. Then I saw the z9 and I was somehow excited, but when I realized that neither the z9 does not have a dual card record, IDK, it is over for me. I can not film weddings, and I am doing it by myself, and do not have a backup option. I spent too much money on Nikon, I have a lot of lenses, flashes and stuff, but voila I adapt them on my Panny Boy. Now, after one year with Panny, I don't have a passion to take Nikon in my hands. Panny won my heart.

As a mainly Nikon user for photography, I’ve kept an eye on them but they are still behind the game. Long story short, I’m switching to Sony for everything, because I also started shooting video and, oh boy, Sony is fantastic. Only big difference, quality of the bodies, Nikon is the obvious winner and for some reason their dslr sensor looks more natural than the Sony mirrorless sensor but I haven’t been able to try more than one Sony camera to really form a better opinion.

I know backup is a big concern, but this argument can go back to the film days of shooting weddings when there were no backup options. Even in the early digital age, cameras didn't always have two slots available, but used to shoot professionally. It's a reason for investing in great cards. It’s funny how times have changed. The early DSLRs had 1 slot and worked well for most people. The worry then was having 2 or more bodies in case one had an issue, as in one case for me, the camera overheated and locked up, having another meant the shooting continued. The setup was one with a 24-70 and another with a 70-200. In today’s world, recording media is more likely the fail point. The good stuff cost money and not everyone can shell out for that. You do what you feel is necessary for your peace of mind, multiple bodies, multiple cards, people have shot successfully either way.

At the same time they used cinema cameras like Canon's c100 and onwards or Sony's fx6. 2. You say dslr everyone did it this way, it's a problem of those photographers who endangered all their customers by deleting information. Today, all companies allow such a thing as a basis, but Nikon chose not to support it, of course, like the other features that Nikon did not include in dslr for decades, which caused Canon to overtake it by a huge margin in sales. @@gavriel_adi Sadly, the camcorder and DSLR market lost out to mirrorless cameras, to satisfy the needs of hybrid shooters. Young content creators have demanded more from their gear which led a revolution in the industry. I’m from the old school side where we worked with what we had and overcame the problems we had. The younger generation has passed up the camcorder in lieu of mirrorless cameras, which they then rig out to make a “cinema” camera. Nikon didn’t have a video arm and that, I believe held them back. They may still have the photography way of thinking in their development group but, I think of there is enough request for that feature, they can probably enable it. We know bad news travel faster than good. There are many people shooting weddings with the Z9 and if they were having issues with it, they would be talking and posting about it. @@niconatal1 Hi. Just the 4k 60p oversample alone was the selling point for me. The z9 video has better kontrast and more detail. The focus system on the A7s3 is easier but the z9 is a powerhouse. No regrets 👌 I hope that helps.
