This former ATP player must have read Bill Tilden’s famous classic ‘Match Play and the Spin of the Ball.’ Published in 1924, this book describes the tennis ball as a third party in a singles match. The question Tilden essentially raised was will the tennis ball be your friend or your opponent’s friend? Tilden was the greatest tennis player of the 1920’s, his life was filled triumphs and tragedies.

“The Inner Game of Tennis “ also created this feeling by having the stroker focus on the grooves of the ball as it spun toward the stroker and also see/feel the different parabolic flight paths that the ball took as it was batted back and forth.

The ball is much more than simply something to hit, it is a third party in a match that a player must control via his racket. Will the ball be your friend or your opponent’s friend?
