Want to learn how to leave your Great Dane dog home alone? Whether they're a puppy or adult, leaving your dog home alone can sometimes result in destructive behavior. This is especially true for Great Danes who can be prone to separation anxiety.
Follow these simple tips to learn how to properly prepare your home and provide your dog with the necessary (appropriate) distractions while you're away. Slowly increase the time that you leave them alone to allow them to adjust to the process. Once they show success, you can experiment with allowing them more access inside your home.
Our secret trick is to stuff Kong toys with peanut butter and then freeze them so that they act as a tasty treat for your dog to distract themselves with while you're gone. For dogs with extreme cases of anxiety, you can also consider leveraging CBD oils to help ease their nerves. However, make sure to consult with your veterinarian before giving your dog CBD.

It took me about 6 months for my Dane to feel comfortable being left alone. If I don't say bye and be a good boy, he will wine until I do and when I get home, I say hello, have you been a good boy? then I walk around to see if he got into anything. If all is good, he gets a reward. When he does get into something, he will hide and act very shy thus giving himself up as he has that guilty look on his face.

When you leave them "home alone" you will be better off leaving your curtains or blinds open so they can see outside. It lets them view you departing and returning without destroying your window coverings. Also in the beginning start training your Dane to lay down outside a closed room door. They will whine and cry until you come out of the room however it will help them relax and understand that when you leave the house you will be returning. I have owned 5 of these majestic animals, good luck!

Frozen Kong with PB is GOLD! My Dane gets excited when I leave now. I hide his fish oil and glucosamine in it and he eats them no problem! Highly recommend! You’ll need the largest Kong

Rescued my gorgeous boy - he was hard work for months- but I love him totally - and he seems to think im ok too. So I don’t want to be away from him for long- he thinks the same too. He comes to work with me most days - every day is a mix and different , he’s cool with that. It’s like having another young son - I love being with him and the feedback is priceless. ❤

A friend of a friend gave us our first Great Dane 5 days ago. Abbey is 4 months old and about 45 lbs. Already crate-trained, thank goodness, but we don't use if very much. We also already have 4 dogs (10-yo Lab, 5-to fox terrier, 3-yo chihuahua, and 1+1/2-yo Shi Tzu), as well as 4 in-and-out kitties! What a wonderful family! I'm a senior with no grandkids and my grown son lives with me. We both have high-functioning autism and are so much more comfortable with animals than with people . The first 4 dogs and 2 of the cats sleep in the bed with my son, and last night I let Abbey sleep with me for the first time! She is REALLY a good dog! So blessed to have her added to our tribe. And SO glad I found this channel! Thank you for making it and for all the Dane lovers who give such good comments!

Got 2 8-week old great danes right now. Not our first rodeo with two at the same time but I'm pretty sure we blocked out the wild beast puppy mode lol. Starting crate training at night. Haven't left them alone yet but soon... Hopefully soon. Potty training two at the same time... oh sweet lord... Pray for us lol

My first Great Dane was 100% ok being left home alone for up to 8 hours, but I had a Rottweiler for him to play with. Both were good to go on bladder for that length of time too.

yes and consistency is a key tool too. We always said "Be right back" whether it was a trial drive away or to go see a movie and when we returned we consciously tried not to have any bigger "reunion actions" than if we just woke up. Read "Gina Goes to Galveston..." and see when she played with "Mr TP" one day! Cheers, Doc Willis

I fill up horns w/natural PB (dump off the oil 1st) & then freeze them. I can usually refreeze this if I’m careful to make sure they’re thick enough. I don’t do hoofs anymore as they’re too hard on their teeth. I’ve had Dane’s for 50 yrs (my parents had them B4 I was born.) I’ve been giving them frozen PB for the last 20 yrs.

I have TWO Dane puppies, a month apart... it’s hard because we got out of the biting stage with the older and all was fine! Then the younger started to bite and it’s been like that since we got them! Haha but we also have a mini pig and bulldog that they love to stay outside and tire themselves with, so that helps us a lot!!
